Life in Russia is depressing, how can we live here, everything inside Russia is so grey and not welcoming. Every day I see these comments under some of my videos, many other videos. Today I tried to think about why does Russia give such vibes and does it depend on how it's usually portrayed in the media.

In autumn the nature starts its hibernation, it is a farewell up to next spring. Some people say, the nature dies - dies to be reborn after winter. Excellent in autumn or winter: Drink some hot tea (your typical tea) with spices (cinnamon, coriander, piment, vanilla, nutmeg - only a bit each, put the spices in a sachet, will be removed before drinking), sugar or honey and a bit butter or milk. Alternative: Same spices in warm milk, sugar or honey. Or you drink hot wine, red or white or cider, heaten SLOWLY with same spices (no vanilla), a bit orange peel, sugar or honey. No milk / butter here. Spices and peel please remove before drinking. 🇩🇪

The apartments and cityscape in Russia looks very underwhelming just like their economy. Especially compared to first-world countries like The USA. And I don't think that it's wrong to notice or comment on that. It's not Zangieff or other Russian citizens fault that their economy is so bad. It's the Russian oligarchs and corrupt government that holds the country back. Many Americans love to complain about how bad their government, country and culture is, but fail to realise that they have it better than 90% of the world including Russia. Please let's not sit around and pretend that life for the average Russian is as good as life for an average American. I'm not saying that America doesn't have its problems but at least the majority of the population doesn't have to live in soviet style blocks.

November is really the most “depressive” month of the year, just because it is the end of the extremely beautiful bright autumn (in my hometown the view of the streets in autumn looks absolutely fantastic) and the end of warmth. So, it is true just due to our climate, and I’m absolutely ok about it too))) This makes us feel even happier when the snow finally starts falling and the town becomes colourful and shining again 😊❤ The beauty is in the eyes of the one who is watching.

@@Natashanjka but the majority are grey, no? But it's also not only the color, it's the architecture too. This very monotonous, straight and plain structure gives kind of a prison vibe. It's not only Russia, many ex Soviet countries have it and also Germany too. It can feel a little sterile and souless. I think it's the kind of thing you adjust to though, if you have lived with it your entire life it becomes normal and you can't see the starkness as much. But if you have been exposed to a lot of old European villages and cities, cobbled streets, cute gardens and old buildings- the atmosphere can feel very ominous and dense

Hi Zangieff, my friend. I am so happy to see you 👋. If you go to German cities they look depressive and grey as well, except for little villages with very old half-timbered houses (you find them usually in center and southern region - for tourists "Deutsche Fachwerkstrasse" is maybe interesting) or houses made of clinker (you find them in northern region of FRG, the roofes are sometimes covered with reed). When its dark and the lights go on they look really lovely. Especially new houses (small and huge) here have no soul, look trist, cold and sad. Some people love it, others not. I never lived in a (huge) city amid huge houses, I could not imagine to do it and won't do it. When the sun is shining, everything looks more friendly and everywhere its more bright. And without humor, joy and fun everything is grey and depressive. So we should never lose it, whatever happens. Hugs from Frankfurt@Main 🇩🇪 For understanding: I don't live in Frankfurt, but 20 km south of and Frankfurt is better known than my hometown.

Your streets and apartment blocks aren't really more depressing that those to be found anywhere else, even with the grey weather. All they need to make them look more cheerful are people walking and chatting outside, children playing and other signs of social life. Sunshine and a lick of fresh paint would help, but they are not the most important elements. I've seen cheerful happy scenes in very poor slum villages and depressing sterile 'emptiness' in well-tended, climate-blessed rich areas. It's the people make the place. The children you show playing outside make all the difference.

Hi Zangieff, nice to see you again! To be honest, winter has always been my favourite time of the year. Maybe because I live in South Africa and any other time of the year is unbearably hot and humid (for me at least). We have short winters and the hot seasons are long and very hot (especially from November to March). February is usually the hottest month of the year. Although we have spring from 1 September to the en of November, the heat doesn't start gradually. It's still winter one day and then boom! it's hot. The rain comes later and later every year, so everything green burns to brown until early November when we get some rain in the central and northern parts of South Africa. Only then do we see some green. So the bottom line is every country has it's pretty and less pretty times. Personally I would prefer long winters over long summers. But that's just me. 🇿🇦

On a deeper level, it seems like you were really trying to communicate that you’ve discovered happiness in your life with your family despite the grey skies and weather. There’s joy to be seen all around you as long as you’re open to seeing it. I also live in a place that has grey skies and cold winters. I don’t mind it in the least. It provides a fantastic contrast to summer. I’ve really come to enjoy the different seasons and climates where I live. Russia is a place I’d love to visit someday. Thank you for bringing it to me.

Life in central NY State is similarly overcast, brown, and muddy. It is just the way it goes in November and yes it is the worst. It also makes for a general population drain as people move to Florida or other places Americans call the 'Sun Belt"

Zangieff the outdoors reminds me of the US Midwest in the late fall and winter., gray skies, bare trees. That's one reason I would never move back there after graduating from university. The one thing inside that looks depressing is the old style inside the older apartments. The wallpaper looks like something I would have found in my grandparents house in the 50s & 60s. The lighting inside the apartments looks harsh and not warm and generally the style looks out of date.

It's a state of mind! It's almost winter here and to me EVERY season is beautiful! Currently live in Ohio valley, trees are already bare but still so beautiful! I LOVE seeing other places no matter the season. People are going to have a negative perspective and comments because they are negative.

This looks like every northern city in America when November comes around. And most of the south too. It is interesting to see the new buildings versus the old ones though. Usually I like older buildings better than new ones because older typically has more character to it and modern ones are cold and plain. But from this video it looks like it's the opposite. I was cracking up because when you showed the one apartment and said it was occupied by an older lady, I had to chuckle because that is exactly how the elderly decorate here in the U.S too. I just moved into a place with little pink flowers on the walls where an older person lived for a long time. (Yes we painted.) It's always interesting to me how people of every country are so often similar. Yes differences of course, but the similarities outnumber the differences in my view.

Colors, architecture, leave distribution, it can all have an effect, but I think it all matters little if the sun shines. In autumn and winter you can have blue skies and a shining sun just as well and if you do, it all looks fine 😀🌞

Do you think it is not the atmosphere but the state of mind? You have a good happy life and a positive attitude, beautiful sweet family. You can say your glass is half empty or half full. I also didnt think this seems depressing. It is very compact, lots of people in a small area. Maybe some would prefer a private home, some prefer the city. Happiness is the choice of your state of mind. 😘

I really like the contrast of your videos shot in summer and in autumn. It's just nature - trees with no leaves, overcast sky, that's just autumn. As for the many, many apartment buildings from several eras, that is unusual to North American people where we're accustomed to individual houses with large yards. It's just a different place.

A really interesting and educational video, Zangieff, thank you! I love to see the Soviet-era architecture and to me this is best presented against a palette of muted late-autumn colours. I learned an unfamiliar declension of that 'you-know-what' word on the wall at 6:54. I have added it to my vocabulary! 😄 I expect this video will do well due to the title and the KZbin algorithm mistaking it for an anti-Russia theme! Keep up the good work. 👍

@@gvsku Prepositional case (plural form) as far as I could discern. Google Translate and Reverso Content turned up nothing for that spelling, but I found it via a Google search that led me to a Russian language version of 'Wiktionary'. The Wiktionary entry is under the word spelt without the final 'х' and the full spelling appears at the bottom of the cases table near the top of the page. I'm sure it's not a great idea to learn Russian from a wall rather than a teacher, but at least it is quite good fun! 😄

@@TheRealMick interesting) I thought the last letter was 'К' not 'Х', thus the word in question will be 'уё...ок' (like 'ублюдок' but worse😉 ), misspelled as 'уё...ак' as the unstressed 'О' is pronounced as 'А'. Singular, nominative.)))

BrotherZ! Landscaping is a year round thing to do, until it snows. The trees and shrubs that I see in the videos often appear to be volunteers or neglected. Thoughtful plantings will add color and interest even in drab weather conditions. Leaf debris must be removed weekly until snow starts to fall. It’s a corporate management issue. Private ownership of houses, not apartments, adds greatly to the landscape by providing the homeowner artist with a creative outlet. Remember that parking lots and roadways are part of the landscape. Thoughtful design for access and storm water removal, blacker pavement with delineated lines that pop with color and concrete curbs that are kept clean add immensely to brighter living. Good landscape is an ongoing, lifetime achievement. When is the best time to plant a shade tree? Twenty years ago or today. Good landscaping starts within the space between the citizen’s ears.

Dear Zangieff! Your videos are so heartening! Actually, I really like the older Soviet apartments, with their balconies and courtyards. Of course there are shortcomings with these apartments, as with Victorian/Edwardian terraced houses in the UK, in one of which we live, but the construction is on a human scale and the community life is much better than in a 24 or 40 (as they have in China 😱). The climate is what it is in Russia and totally different to Japan or Maritime Climate Europe. It's the people who make the difference, and most of my friends in Russia are not well off, but they are all exceptional, so thank God for people like you! Keep up the good work!

I am from the upper Midwest region near Chicago and our area looks much like yours in the fall. Lots of greys and browns and can be depressing. In some places we have bright yellow leaves and red ones but not everywhere. I think the lack of daylight has a lot to do with how people feel around me and not just the drab brown and grey colors.

Zangieff, I totally agree. Your attitude is logical and not emotional. I am from the Northeast of the United States where we get strong winters every year as part of the climate and it is actually identical in several ways. Also, the tall buildings make it look like many parts of NYC which has been called "the world's greatest city ".. I think many people love to stereotype and just label Russia as depressing for xyz factors and apply it to any image they see of it. But anyone who has real life experience traveling will know the reality.. You pointed out the variants of plant life which is completely true and the markers of perceived imperfections bc of things like each resident deciding how to frame their balconies. The comparison to summer make the area look like an idyllic storybook village and yet as you said, its actually the same streets, buildings and trees. I'm glad you have a logical set of eyes and brain, its just too bad many others are blinded and lacking in experience.
