Why Samuel L. Jackson's Death Scene Was Cut From Jurassic Park

So many awesome characters have come and gone in the Jurassic Park franchise...some of them have left willingly, and become legends in the fan community...others didn't get such a privelege. And while its
undeniably obvious that a lot of people have died in the Jurassic series, most of them have been mere drops in the bucket, when compared to others who are well recognized to this very day. One such character, is
Ray Arnold, Jurassic Park's Chief Engineer. This chain smoking technician was the complete opposite to that of his programming peer, Dennis Nedry, and worked hard on trying to undo the mess that his slovenly coworker
had put the island in during the tropical storm. A storm that was unfortunately, more than just a plot point in the movie, as fate would have Hurricane Iniki hit Hawaii during the filming of Jurassic Park in 1992.
This unforseen event caused Samuel L. Jackson's character, to sadly be robbed of his very intense death scene, after the engineer goes out to the Maintenance Shed alone, once the system has been shut down. In a
recent interview with the A.V. Club, Jackson got to talk about his experience on the film, saying: "I was actually supposed to go to Hawaii, to shoot my death scene, but there was a
hurricane that destroyed all the sets, so I didn’t get to go," "All you see is the residue of my body, my arm. But, yeah, I was supposed to be on set." Its kind of disappointing to hear that after all this time,
Ray Arnold was supposed to get a send off in the film that would have revealed, EXACTLY what happened to him after he walks off screen to go and restart Jurassic Park. Now, I searched the internet looking for any sort
of outline of his death scene and what exactly was supposed to happen to him in the film version, but unfortunately I couldn't find any real evidence on how this would have transpired. Even after reading through the
Jurassic Park shooting script, I was unable to come up with any sort of indication, as to how Spielberg would have shot this scene. I have however read the original book, by Michael Crichton, who did a draft of the
screenplay before David Koepp came in to do a final rewrite, and the Crichton version of Mr.Arnold's passing, could give us a little more insight into how the character was supposed to go.

Idk. Although an Arnold death scene might be cool to watch, I kind of like the way it was presented in the final film. Plenty of people get killed on camera, some via the raptors. The surprise when Arnold puts his hand on Ellie's shoulder and she sighs in relief, then turns to address him, only to realize that what's on her is a severed hand and the only thing that's left of the man ... it was brutal, intense, and a huge shock the first time watching the film. Seeing Arnold's death on screen, it would have been just another death; not seeing it, it allows for a really memorable scene. That's just my opinion, though.

I read the novel (obviously) and especially adored the entire ending raptor sequence. However, in the film, omitting Arnold's death was a great move. I wouldn't have wanted another Raptor death competing with Muldoon's iconic death. This way, both deaths were iconic. Plus, I've always been a fan of the "less is more" form of storytelling and just seeing Ellie pull out the arm was brilliant imo.
@prettypaperthings
@prettypaperthings 6 жыл бұрын
Andy Reptar it wasn't a great move because it wasn't a move at all. It was forced and it just happened to work for them. I agree sometimes less is more, but not always. Sometimes it sucks getting stuck with not knowing something and just getting the doubts. It's like unfinished business, sometimes.

its kinda crazy though that in a 3 minute period ( the time SLJ character gave for bringing systems back) the raptors realized the fences were down, attacked the fences and managed chew through them, then chase down Arnold and eat him. seems kinda far fetched to be honest.

Thank you, for all these years. This finally explains Ellie's limping which the original scene seem to heavily exaggerate beforehand. Falling over Mr Ray Arnold's leg being severed and having a harder fall over it, now adds to why she was limping the way she did in the movie. And cheers for the links!

a scene where the herbivores are a threat would be great for a change-. in real life, surprisingly elephants and hypos cause way more human deaths than lions or tigers
@jameslove1162
@jameslove1162 6 жыл бұрын
El De Los Dinosaurios the reason Hippos and Elephants cause a large amount of human death is because people are stupid, these animals are very docile but getting too close, or giving them reason to attack, is likely to get you killed. I think the reasoning behind the herbivores not being so violent in the films is because generally the people going to Jurassic Park, at least in the originals, are fairly smart and know when it's appropriate to get close too an animal or not by it's behaviour. So, people like Alan Grant would know to keep away from the young of say, a Triceratops, but in the Lost World we did see some herbivores fighting against the soldiers, because they were pressed in the situation and had to fight for their survival. For example, Hippos causing deaths in Africa is mainly because people enter their breeding grounds and 'baby-territories', but in Jurassic Park the humans know to keep back, and not antagonise the creatures. Also, the young are grown separate from their parents in Jurassic park, although again, near the beginning of The Lost World we see stegosaurus' getting pretty aggressive because Dr Harding gets too close to the nest. It's all about circumstances, and in Jurassic Park (which is a controlled environment) the people are less likely to be in situations where herbivores would attack them, whereas in real life if you're attacked by a Hippo or Elephant, chances are you're in the wild, uncontrolled. Also the fact that most, but not all, people that ventured to Jurassic Park (in the originals) were doctors, or wildlife experts, that had a bit of sense when it came to not antagonising the dinosaurs.
@eldelosdinosaurios776
@eldelosdinosaurios776 6 жыл бұрын
hippos and elephants are not docile at all. human is not always the cause. many times herbivores also fight to each other for different causes. it´s not lke they will attack constantly for any reason.. but neither carnivores do that
@jameslove1162
@jameslove1162 6 жыл бұрын
El De Los Dinosaurios by docile I mean they will not go out of their way to kill you, a predator does. If a Hippo is in a river and you stand near the edge, it isn't likely to try to kill you. If it's a crocodile infested river, then the crocs are practically guaranteed to try and kill you. Any animal that doesn't need to kill yo survive, won't go out of it's way to do so. Now, from the animals point of view, you just getting marginally close to it can be perceived, from the POV of the animal, as a threat, as you are trying to hunt it. Just because a human may know it's intentions are not sinister, when approaching a Hippo, doesn't mean the Hippo knows this, it only knows it may need to defend itself. Just because it attacks what it can perceive as a threat, doesn't mean it's not docile. But even if a human stands near a Hippo infested river, and is attacked, it can just be because the Hippo knows Humans are predators, which we are in terms of the animal kingdom, so it may attack because it needs to defend it's home, ie the river. Again, animals do not know the intentions of humans, so even though it will seem like it wasn't the humans fault, just going close to a Hippo makes it the persons fault if they are attacked, since the animal is just acting on instinct. In jurassic park we see more of the carnivores because they go out of their way to hunt people, obviously the herbivores don't. It's that simple, plus the fact is that we do actually see the violent side of herbivores a number of times in the films.
@jameslove1162
@jameslove1162 6 жыл бұрын
El De Los Dinosaurios "it' s not like they will attack constantly for any reason.. but neither carnivores do that", I know that. The point is carnivores hunt for food, they kill for food, they go out of their way to kill for food. And this is reflected in the films, since the violent side of the carnivores we see is them hunting, obviously herbivores do not hunt. It would be strange to see it in the films, that's all I'm saying. Just to reiterate, we see the violent side to carnivores because they HAVE to hunt, herbivores do not hunt, so why would the film show them being violent? The only room for it in the film is if a herbivore is defending itself, and we already see that in the films.

I would say that his death scene was cut well before filming even started on Kauai. They already had 4 death scenes planned Jophery, and Gennaro, Nedry and Muldoon, although the latter 3 were to be filmed well after the crew finished in Hawaii, on Soundstages. Arnold didn't seem like a main character enough to warrant a death scene

I think your speculation on the scene and the parts of storyboard you shared are right in line with the what is referenced at the beginning of the film. At the beginning of the film, Dr. Grant shares to the dismissive boy about how a raptor eats its prey. "It starts eating you while you're still alive." I suspect that originally the script was to be the foreshadowing of the scene you are describing but, due to the storm, they had to make the script changes. My suspicion, as a tag-line to your idea, is that originally when Ellie Sattler turns on the lights she finds the Raptor eating John "Ray" Arnold possibly, while he is still alive. That would reflect Ellie's terror, even more, running from the shed. I suspect the script and body parts scene was written once they were not able to film the canceled scenes mentioned by Samuel L. Jackson Thoughts?

As much as I liked nearly all of the actors in the movie, Samuel Jackson's performance as Arnold always blew me away. He just flat out nailed it. His facial expressions, the cigarette in his mouth and perhaps most importantly, the delivery he gave when yelling at the computer screen are perfect. Everyone seems to love the line about holding onto your butts, but I see far less comments about the line, "PLEASE! GODDAMIT I HATE THIS HACKER CRAP!". It's also not to say the other line isn't great or wonderfully ready, but it's this moment that truly defines Arnold. When I watch this movie, I don't see Samuel L Jackson, but I do see a tired, angry boss, who has a lot of pressure riding on his shoulders. He knows all too well the consequences of what's happening at that exact moment and the frustration just explodes wonderfully. This is the one thing in both, the movie and the book, that I wish hadn't happened. Maybe it's because I've been a boss in his shoes with a lot riding on my ability to handle pressure, but I always hope in vain that what's going to happen to him does not happen.

That is a good explanation for what happened! Though, I do like how it came out the way it did in the final cut. Sometimes a bit of mystery is a GOOD thing, as it builds suspense and horror! I feel the same way about the Alien films. The prequels are pretty good, and shed some light we fans have wondered about for years, but they also take away the mystery element, making the original films less scary and suspenseful.
