To OP. *Who* are they going to replace him with? No top drivers would want to sign for Sauber for 2025 and who knows how this Audi F1 thing will pan out? What good test/third driver would be a *good* replacement? Why replace a proven winner of 10 races, 67 podiums and 20 pole positions when it's clear the hopeless car is the culprit here? Rubens Barrichello scored *zero points* in the 2007 F1 season. In 2008 he scored 11 points. It seemed as if Barrichello's career was over and he'd have no drive for 2009... Until he got signed by Brawn GP for 2009, won 2 races, 1 pole and finished the 2009 championship in 3rd. Clearly still capable of winning races in a good car. Barrichello hadn't won a race since 2004 when he won races in 2009. Does that mean he somehow was a worse driver in 2005-2006-2007-2008? No the Ferrari F2005 an the Hondas were bad cars. Bottas finished the 2022 season in 10th in his Alfa debut year. Ahead of Sebastian Vettel in the Aston Martin and Daniel Ricciardo in the McLaren. People have short memories and can only perceive the present. He should be in that other Aston Martin alongside Alonso, and not Stroll.

With results like these from Sauber, Alpine and even Williams, who failed to put two cars on the track in the last GP. Formula 1 would benefit a lot from a team like Andretti entering the grid, even by having two more places for drivers, it wouldn't solve the problem at the top, but it would be very interesting in the middle of the field.

He is such a great driver just look at his career at Mercedes, I’m a botass believer , but it definitely hurts seeing him so low on the grid so consistently, and I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he’s out of a team next year, possibly mid season, I just wish it he wasn’t leaving on such an extreme low.

Hope he pulls a Barrichello move. Don't know Barrichello's story? Won 9 races for Ferrari in 2000-2004 as Schumacher's number 2. Got dropped for Massa and ended up in a Honda which kept getting worse and worse. Scored zero points in 2007. Usually ended up last or retired in the races in 2008. Then got signed by the all-new Brawn GP team for 2009. Won 2 races in grand style (11 wins to his name), a pole and finished a strong 3rd in the final standings ahead of both Hamilton and Raikkonen in the McLaren and Ferrari respectively. Did Barrichello forget how to drive between 2004 and 2009? No him winning races again in 2009 proves he still had it and the hopeless Hondas he drove made people wrongly assume he was a spent force. Gerhard Berger? Same story. Never a Senna or Prost kind of driver but a solid driver who could deliver wins throughout his spotty career. Last won in 1997 at Hockenheim aged 38. Riccardo Patrese is another good one. Won a race in 1982 and his 2nd win in 1983. Then got stuck in hopeless Alfas (history repeated itself...) and Brabhams. Got a drive for Williams in 1989 and then won his 3rd race in 1990. That's a record 7 years between two wins in F1. In 1991 he drove well indeed, won 2 races and finished a strong 3rd in championship behind Senna and Mansell, and ahead of the aforementioned Berger too (4th in 1991). In 1992 Patrese was 2nd in the championship. He drove so well Williams wanted to keep him for 1993 but Patrese had already signed a deal with Benetton and said:"I don't break deals I promised to keep." All this while being close to 40 years of age. In F1 teams need the Barrichellos, Bergers, Patreses.... and Bottas's Not consistent enough to be champions themselves but proven winners with long careers.

It's not even his fault really, he had a shot at points in Bahrain and had a good start before getting very unlucky with Hulkenberg and terrible pitstop. Then Australia he was definitely fighting around Albon and Magnussen, if he just had a normal pitstop it could've been easy. Also the fact that these cars are so slow is painful. How can they go from being so fast at the start of 2022 to this

16:47 Spot on, this is the reality of Hinwil today. It's caught in the same sort of limbo that often happens when a company is bought by another with a "long close" (meaning, the sale is announced months or even years before the official transfer of ownership). Been through that personally, puts the whole operation in a weird state. Getting approval for necessary spending gets tedious and bogged down. Most of the staff doesn't know what their future is going to be once the acquisition is final, which absolutely corrodes morale and cooperation. Political maneuvering and ass-covering becomes rampant, cliques form and the best talent that isn't given a signed retention contract immediately looks externally for a landing zone. Rapidly becomes a sh*t-show, both efficiency and quality suffers greatly. You can see it happening in front of our very eyes here... Another astute and relevant piece Laws, nice werk! 😊

Bottas and poor pitstops. I still remember that time at Bahrein when Mercedes goofed up by accidentally putting his tyres on the car of Russell, and then Bottas came into the pits, they didn't have tyres for him anymore, and they had to send him out on his old hard tyres again, and then those tyres completely fell off the cliff. Either way, Sauber can take solace in one thing. Soon there will be the Shanghai weekend. And aside from being Zhou's home race, that weekend is also a sprint weekend, meaning that there's at least one event there that lousy pitstops can't really screw over.

Haas didn't demand points for Mick, they wanted him not to destroy the car in a very expensive way. I think HAAS at this point are a better option than any of the other backmarkers. This is the B team of Ferrari. HAAS have a facility inside Maranello. They have many Ferrari engineers. Every good part Ferrari builds, they also get it. If Ferrari builds a great chassis and a great engine in 2026 HAAS would benefit greatly from it. Audi will bring in the money for further investment but that will take many years to come to fruition and their engine for 2026 will not be at Ferrari, Mercedes or Honda levels. Williams are 2 decades behind according to Vowels and they don't even have the money to modernise yet. Torro Rosso have joined forces with RedBull. Alpine have been going downhill and engineers are leaving nonstop. Bottas and Zhou should call Gene Haas today. Hulk should stay at HAAS.

Just a little detail I noticed last weekend: in that little F1 intro presenting all the drivers before every session , just after showing Bottas there's a little bit of animation with certain car parts. And in case you hadn't noticed yet, you can probably guess what part specifically is shown. Just coincidence or did someone have a pretty sneaky sense of humor? That bit aside, it's sad to see Sauber struggling like this, and the effect it has on their drivers. Bottas deserves better. And Sainz would have to be crazy to go there even when Audi takes over, as it would take years to get truly competitive. They managed to dominate endurance racing for years by A) keep going on while all (better) competitors left, and B) throwing insane amounts of money at it. Good luck with the cost cap. Hulkenberg, yeah, I can see that happen.

Sauber is currently a zero sum game. Audi din't want to spend more than they have to (building value to their future aquisition) and Sauber not spending nor investing more than they absolutely have to ( maximising profits ). Sauber is not selling a brand, but a business with a wind tunnel - a small one in the grand scheme of things - and the grid slots - the real value - they occupy. The flip side to this is that a major brand is doing the buying who does not have their own wind tunnel. This scenario, I think, is the reason Audi have stepped up their programme for the take over. The "slow conservative" approach coming from Audi and not that Sauber were holding out. IMO, Audi shoould have bought out from the get go and be a client team until they can come online as a manufacturer in '26 and in so doing build the credibility of a serious F1 team. Right now it is in limbo and Audi have only recently gone all in, and this is starting to show. In the long run, it is going to hurt the Audi brand

He’s been free to work on his own branding now that he’s out from under Mercedes control. If anything, it will keep him racing longer because that’s how F1 works nowadays, especially when you are outside of the top teams

Sauber is no embarrassing like Alpine. They are not a factory team, they do not currently have factory resources, they are not based in the same place as any other team, and the only thing that is keeping them behind Alpine is their pit stops, and even then, that didn’t keep them behind in Australia…

I don't think you can call bad pitstop for sauber "anomaly" anymore. It would be anomaly that they service both cars with out issues. I agree about Audi ditching both drivers. I don't really understand why Valteri is saying he will give Audi extension priority as in my opinion it is clear that they don't want anything that reminds old sauber team and drivers are most visible part of that. Best he could do would be to go back to Mercedes as second driver, but more realistically he could get Albon:s spot at Williams if Albon gets Mercedes seat. Haas will probably remain back of the grid, so I don't think that is even worth considering anymore. if that is only spot he could get he should leave it to some younger driver and retire. Haas doesnt have big sponsors and current tp is more of a technical guy than someone who wine&dines with potential sponsors. Gene doesn't want to invest more so all in all I would be surprised if that team isnt bottom team in 2026 after Sauber's phoenix moment.

Remember when Ferrari drivers Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc dueled it out like Ocon and Gasly, or Tsunoda and Riccardo? Remember when one driver took both of the Ferrari cars out of a race? That's why they decided let go of one of the drivers at the end of 2024.

I still cant understand why only the top ten get points in a race... Through a season we know a Haas isnt playing the same game as a Redbull, they're battling the teams around them, yet no one around them will pick up a point, other than super seldomly.. What cons are there to give points up to 16th? If only top ten get points and you're fighting for 14th or 15th.. To what end?? For nothing instead of nothing? Dont the back markers deserve to have their own mini battles down the grid for every single position counting? I just dont get it, whats the drawback?

@@bsylvester713 well.. Having MORE points than the team next to you? Where's the motivation if you are team 8,9,10 and all three of you get zero points most races? Things have to go wrong for those peasants to pick up a single point here and there? Why cant the front runners duke it out for the 15 - 30 points every race and the back markers duke it out for getting 5 points instead of 1. 5,4,3,2,1 for example feels way better than 1,0,0,0,0. Atleast you'd get some good scraps out of trying to maximize poultry points instead of everyone from 11 to 20 just "bringing the car home" in the final laps because whats the actual difference between finishing 11th or 17th if both get a hard zero points

F1TV - requires a yearly subscription, but I found it worth it even just for everything you get around F1: pre-and post- qualifying and race shows, tech segments, race analysis, practice, qualifying, and races whenever you want to watch them, choice between F1 TV and international feeds, all the driver cam and radio, live tire and lap time stats, live GPS positions, and of course it has all the support races as well

If you have a driver like Bottas in your team you can't expect anything good. I just can't understand why that guy is still in F1 while there is plenty better talent out there. He's the type of rider that admitted he couldn't continue to keep up with Lewis performance and thus took a step back. In F1 a step back is simply not good enough!
