I think the main reason so many people despise this show is that it hits too close to home for many. It's about dumb teenagers doing dumb teenager things. In all honesty, the characters in School Days felt way more like actual kids I knew in middle and highschool, minus the murder (as far as I was aware, at least).

I'm pretty sure it's because people who watched it were expecting a stereotypical anime romance/harem, only for the rug to be pulled under them. It all comes down to how it was marketed: all the publicity and images were the typical smiling anime girls, there was no clear message that it would have a dark twist on its subject matter. On the other hand, in my case it was the reverse: I already knew the ending (thanks to old youtube videos like the top worst anime endings), so when I decided to get into it recently, I already knew it was going to tackle the subject in a more dark but realistic way. Thanks to that, I actually am one of the few who appreciates what this anime was trying to do. I despise harems, I'm not gonna lie, so I appreciate that this anime tried to be different by showing what would really happen if some dumb teenager tried to do the same. But that's only because I already knew what the anime was about. If I had watched it expecting a normal romance like everybody else, no doubt I would've hated it too

I like to think of School Days as anti-cheating propaganda. All Makoto had to do was not touch other girls and be patient and loving exclusively with Kotonoha, and none of the things that went down in the anime, would've never happened.

For me the most gut-wrenching part is the moment the light in Katsura’s eyes suddenly fades away, because at that point she’s lost all hope and her sanity crumbles. I felt so bad for her.

I'm really glad someone made this video. For me, I've always disliked School Days because it makes me feel horrible (that's kind of the point of the show, though, so that's not really a criticism). The characters make all the wrong decisions, relationships get destroyed - everyone suffers. Even the show's art style plays into this uncomfortable feeling. I just don't like it. That's not what I look for in anime. With that being said, I *knew* that there was critical merit to this show. I just wasn't invested enough in the experience to care about it. I can easily point to the conclusion of the series and say: "these characters are and always have been terrible people," but that's not necessarily true. The show's ending might have been hyperbolic, but this video reminded me that the journey to that point followed a clear, logical trajectory. The characters are a bunch of dumb, melodramatic teenagers. By that I mean that these characters don't fully understand their emotions or how to control them. These are likely the heaviest burdens they've ever had to bear, and they lack the life experience to understand that their issues are minor compared to what they could face later in life. These fleeting romances feel like the be-all end-all to them, and when you take that into consideration, the ending doesn't feel so hyperbolic anymore. The entire series is full of hyperbole, but, at the same time, the series manages to ground itself in the realistic issues it explores. It certainly isn't perfect, but is it the "worst anime ever" like some may say? Not really. At the very least, School Days more than distinguishes itself from most other forgettable harem shows.

And unlike your run of the mill romances, it doesn't fantasize or romanticize the consequences of a relationship being mishandled. It doesn't brush off misunderstandings from the previous manga volume. I just love shows that don't pull any punches to the ugliness of reality, that's why I love dramatic tragedies.

The reason people dont like this show is because they are so used to people in anime not having flaws, or them overcoming them in 2 episodes. In this show people are flawed and like in real life, they dont realize it or are unable to overcome those flaws.

Supposedly in Shiny Days if Makoto rapes Kokoro, Kotonoha murders Makoto which is one of the few endings in the series where Kotonoha stands up to Makoto.

It's also the only ending in which Makato is killed by Kotonoha which really shows that Kotonoha is only willing to attack/kill Makoto if he does something really really bad

I'm glad to see someone else agreeing with me that Sekai is who he's more compatible with. Over the first 8 episode is main sin is not formally breaking it off with Kotonoha sooner. I have a much more cynical interpretation of Kotonoha's character. I think a key moment happens in episode 6, she is being all meek and timid taking the bullying from Otome and her crew until the moment it is exposed that Otome likes Makoto. All of the sudden Kotonoha feels empowered to stand up to stand her. What actually gets Kotonoha invested in the relationship is the Status boost it gives you in High School Girl politics. Also in episode 9 Otome rapes Makoto, he does not consent to that in any way.

I genuinely love this anime and I did from the first episode. It was very engaging and it was especially hard to put down once Ito began his shenanigans, I literally just binged it all the way through because I loved this animes story so much. Definitely one of my favorites because he touches topics that are rarely explored: cheating and its effects on others, major heartbreak, losing yourself to a bad relationship, gaslighting, betrayal by EVERYONE even your friends, and so much more. Love love LOVED this anime!

After watching this anime, I played/read through the School Days HQ and Shiny Days Visual Novels, and found them to be absolutely unique. 0verflow have made something I can't help but appreciate: Fully animated (!) Visual Novels that can go anywhere between a nice, relatively sweet ending to some truly horrendous stuff, all the while, if you're aware of the family tree and lore of 0verflow games in general, there's this unshakable feeling of something (or rather EVERYTHING) being so very, very wrong about it all. I do believe School Days deserves more than to be called "The worst anime ever", though I suppose its infamy does lend it the exposure I believe is appropriate for something that is definitely more than what it may seem.

I like School Days as a guilty pleasure. I would like to see it remade. A lot of the problems I find can be fixed with a simple editing, cleanup the animation, and slow the pacing (maybe add an episode or two). I think it could be a great Greek tragedy on the nature of teenage lust.

I really liked School Days. It’s definitely not a fun/nice anime. It gave me fear, rage and tears. I don’t think any other anime has ever made me feel so many strong emotions in such intensity. To me, the fucked and psychological disturbing storyline is not a flaw, but what makes the experience of watching it so deep.

Just watched this show and funny enough i loved it. I personally love dark stories that aren't afraid to pull some crazy shit. I was kinda bored in the first 1/2 episodes, but after makoto hooked up with sekai for "special training" I was hooked. I really do think that people send too much hate to this show.

Funnily enough, I don't think what I thought two years ago about it. I've changed my view on it quite a bit but I don't really like it still. It was ultimately boring for me and I was only forcing myself through it because of the climate around it at that time. I think if I were to rewatch it I would not get the same experience and/or it would be too boring. At the time of it's relevance I can see why it gained as much traction as it did. To this day though, I'm not really interested in it. Being the first vn adaptation to purposefully adapt the most unpleasant end imaginable. Was actually not as satisfying as it sounds. Ultimately, it's not the worst show ever. There are clearly shows much worse than it and without intention of being provocative. The shows goal was to become popular through that bit of controversy and succeeded. Rest in piece my former self.

I'm so glad I found this video. School Days is actually one of my favorite anime series. I also own the VN. I know it gets a lot of hate and people say it's unrealistic, but I disagree. I knew a lot of kids in middle/high school that I could see acting like this in the name of "love." I see the series as a sort of cautionary tale psychological thriller.

Hell, I haven't even seen your video yet but The anime version is basically like the game version, in which the player makes decisions resulting in a rod which leads to a bad ending. People who are complaining need to play the game then they will understand.

Great video Roger. Good to see this overly hated anime receiving some love in some form. I actually sit on the fence of someone who actually liked this series, but not solely because of the ending. While I didn't see the characters action as deeply as you did, I did feel the interaction of the characters felt natural. Nothing about it came across to off putting with everyone in the series not knowing how exactly to tackle their feelings, nor did they know how to express them. Coming across naturally as teenagers. I also found the balance of tone to be well done for the most part. Usually, when a anime series try to do a bait & switch type of stories, like School Live, the switch comes off as a gimmick instead of something that naturally came about within the series. With School Days, it naturally worked as it slowly changed tone not just in its presentation, but also how the characters slowly started to act towards one another. Slowly becoming more hostile towards one another as the series progressed. As for the ending, I knew it before seeing the series, but never seen it beforehand so aside from the ending I went in blind. Much to my surprise, I enjoyed it which was odd since this was before I became somewhat active in viewing anime. With such a negative stigma I waited for it to live up to its negative reception, but never came. The ending in particular was unexpected, though considering the leap in logics in some of the characters action it seemed appropriate within context it would go that far lol. If the series had a different ending, I still would have liked it since as you mention in the video, the progression, and trajectory of the story was natural which was it biggest draw for me. Despite me liking it, I do feel the writing is deliberately forced to tell its story in a specific way to get it point across, and that can be heavy handed. Also, the lack of any parental interference was obviously absent. If the characters parents had interfere I feel like it would have been more difficult for the creators to tell the story they wanted too. I do feel the anime is over hated, but there's good reasons to dislike the series beyond the fact the characters who are intentionally despicable are despicable. I would disagree with the general public whom usually believe that this is the worst anime ever made, and I would even argue that Makoto isn't the worst character in this series. One thing that always bothered me is how many of School Days detractors completely hate Makoto for having sex with women, despite the fact he had all their consent. Yet, Taisuke Sawanaga who doesn't seem to understand the concept of Rape gets a free pass for some reason by some detractors. I have no idea why Taisuke isn't more hated when he raped Kotonoha. Looking forward to part 2.

I think people find "School Days" controversial, even myself, is because the anime was full of paths of bad decisions that in the game that would give a bad ending, so is in the anime, and the writers purposefully chose those paths to spice the story, making it completely messed up and for some people, including me, make character so hated that we enjoyed the ending. I actually like "School Days" and the concept and the characters of the visual novel, but only the game, because we as the player can actually control the main character, prevent stupid decisions or just make it how we want him to be. But in the anime, he's intimate with almost every single girl because it's an anime, it doesn't give options of a specific route we in the game would go for. Also since the bad endings in the game, most of them had bloodshed, they felt it had to be included in the anime too? Personally, I would have not liked, but loved if they lowered his level of jerkness in the anime because I almost threw my PC out of the window, that's how frustrated I was lol, and the finale being him with one girl dammit. Everything in here is just an opinion so I would like you to respect that ^^

I only watched the anime, I liked it. It is gut-wrenching to think about how much of that really happens IRL. Maybe not to the extent of the last episode, but apart from that: cheating that destroys people, mobbing, gaslighting secret video cameras filming underage people without consent for Porn (it really made me sick, when the one girl which is only a side character, broke down in tears, when she discovered, that she was filmed doing it with her boyfriend) etc. There are a lot of Anime / Movies with dark themes, but most of them are some kind of Fantasy setting where you just shrug it off because it happens in some generic fantasy world. But here it is a school, with teenagers, doing things that teenager can do and probably some are doing. I really made me think about how much of this sick stuff actually happens every day and made me, once again aware, that having teenage years without abuse from whoever is sadly often not the case

This might seem kind of random but I feel like I should express this. what if there was a game that took place after the events of school days or something similar like that, where the main character is a troubled but kindhearted teenager that is suffering from depression and a cynical outlook on life and is also the cousin of Makoto or another character with a similar behavior,(I am aware overflow is not making any games currently and the out of nowhere relative doesn’t make sense knowing the official overflow family tree) and the main character would hear the students talk about Makoto‘s death and being related to makoto and all lead’s to the poor guy being ostracized,almost ignored, and bullied and then his sister adoptive or related introduces him to a girl; the girl can be similar to kotonoha and throughout the game they can start out hating each other but develop feelings for one other early on or later on depending on your choices and maybe act like a tsyundre in order to impress the cynical and bart Simpson like main character but it backfire’s because the realistic reaction would honestly be the main character disliking her a bit, the main heroine would then see the main character doing some delinquent activities like stealing,pulling pranks with his comic relief character friend and running from bullies (btw I don’t think running from bullies‘s is a delinquent activity) So the main heroin decides to steal something to impress the main character and you can have a choice to either encourage her, tell her not to do the things you do and, like school days stay silent and you can also throw in some antagonists and another heroine like sekai that doesn’t really try to help match make the main character and the other heroin together but instead tries to make the protagonist hers in anyway she deems necessary and some of the antagonists can be an innocent looking bully who has a vendetta with the protagonist and his older brother and finally a guy that is smiler to makoto who happens to be one of the protagonist’s friends.(Characters l think should be in the game: yuuki ashikaga, roka kitsuregawa,a dliqent older brother for the protagonist,kyouichi and kyomi kasannoin and otome and Karen kato) (themes: depression, infidelity, Pier pressure, bullying,ptsd and morality,etc) possible name: college days. probably sounds like a bad idea but I just wanted to get it off my chest.

I won’t lie the other reason I dislike this show is because a lot of these issues could’ve been prevented in the first place. Like if makato just immediately Broke up with Katsura when he realized he had feelings for sekai the conflict would’ve been completely avoided. Sekai is also at fault because she literally says she knows it wrong multiple times in the show and still does what she does while he was still dating Katsura. She does tell him they should tell Katsura which again MAKOTO SHOULDVE DONE. But that didn’t happen. Or makato should’ve just have not cheated with her in the first place as the relationship with Katsura was going well and he just needed to wait a little more. I can go on and on with this show. But this was my main issue with it

It wants you to hate the choices of the characters to fulfill the satisfaction the ending provides. The rest of the show also did have some other high points (and some low one). The show as a whole was anything but perfect, but nowhere near what the majority of viewers make it out to be. 8.5/10

I actually like the School Days anime (have not played the games yet). However, I found the finale disappointing. Kotonoha just kills Sekai quickly. Also all the other girls and Taisuke pretty much got away with the wrongs they’ve caused.

All this makes the characters show their lower and despicable side so that we hate them more throughout the series. School days literally does the same thing as the devil man manga, it's a dark, brutal "parody" of typical slice of life romance anime (devilman is a parody of action/superhero manga but I thought it would be a good comparison) and both have crazy twist endings.

Look i watched this anime when i was in school, it was one of the first anime i watched...... it was a train wreck with characters i didnt enjoy. Part of me stuck around cause i was quite puzzled about why all the girls were even into Makoto. That being said, there is a very clear descent into douche that Makoto goes through which could be labeled systemed character progression? Kinda? I mean there was a sort of deconstruction of the whole Harem genre in this anime that i noticed. But i mean the overall feel of it made me steer away from it towards the end.

Besides Studio Ghibli, I've not cared for Anime as a genre. I'm more into documentaries, horror/Shocking movies and even Western Cartoon shows. But, this has to be one of the greatest portrayals of relationships and their flaws I've ever seen from any media I've seen...
