I always took Katsura's statement at the end more metaphorically than literally. She's so far gone, that even if she saw a fetus , she'd just refer to Sekai as a non-person. "She's empty" or "There's nothing inside" could refer to Katsura thinking that she has no soul.
@_erayerdin6 жыл бұрын
I've never considered this point but makes sense since Katsura takes Makoto's head to the seas in the end which felt quite rather metaphorical. The problem here is the boundary of metaphor. Like, did it start from Katsura's boat scene, Katsura vs Sekai fight or killing of Makoto? We'll never have an answer.

Finally someone has a brain, the reality is that the human animal is really unpleasant to observe in action. Mokoto is a normal teenage boy without any form of morale compass, he was only able accomplish his sexual conquest by girls who enabled him to do so. Considering their mental states by the end of the anime violence became the only outcome. There are no clear heroines or victims in this, only a of tragic group of teenagers following their own individual convoluted desires for companionship.

Exactly!

Actually I had another thought but even this was confirmed to be a truly dire situation , which would be adoption. However in a society that treasures uniformity and blood ties, fostered or adopted children are often stigmatized. Which means bring home a child out of wedlock would not become a family celebrated event but would be viewed as a failure or possible burden. The students are expected work to pay their own tuition and rent if not afforded by their parents limited budgets outright, thus Sekai Saionji was a working student completely supporting herself. Our favorite sexual protagonist Makoto Itou was provided modestly by his parents which is why he lacks sympathy for Sekai's misfortune, and our physically gifted but ultimately mentally unstable Kotonoha Katsura came from a wealthy family. Finally Sekai avoided the abortion doctor appointment made for her by Kotonoha because she wished to retain Makoto, upset that he was going to abandon her in the worst possible way she murdered him outright. Ms Katsura however is another case entirely as she wouldn't be able find new newly developing fetus inside Ms Saionji corpse, nevermind the limited amount of time that transpired from conception & the simple fact she knows nothing about medical chemistry. Did she really think a bone-saw would gather the same clear cut medical results as a over the counter pregnancy test kit, however it did dispose of someone who is clearly a armed adversary rather gruesomely as well as previous use in collecting her boyfriends head for easy transport.

Love the Music to School Days, it starts off so sweet and innocent but as you get deeper into the original sound track songs, you find out it gets deep, darker and sometimes even morbid especially with the song that plays during the Bad Endings in the Visual Novel that was perfectly timed in the Anime's finale episode. Also even for those who hated School Days, at least give it credit for being a clear reminder of why Harem Endings don't work in real life. Because if the main Protagonist gets too greedy, this is the end result of a failed Harem ending.
@marcorodriguez87929 ай бұрын
True but in the VN there is a harem ending in which Makoto dates both Sekai and Kotonoha (which is pretty difficult to get without using a guide) and there is also another harem ending but I don't know which girls Makoto ends up with

The next point that I think is quite good about the anime is the film's color tone. You may think this makes no sense, but if you watch School Days many times, you can completely recognize the color and atmosphere of the film gradually darker and quieter than at the beginning of the movie. If at first its colors were quite general and had a romantic feel, then in the middle and later parts of the anime, it only had cold colors with mainly blue-gray and black and white with the rough filter look of the 2000s anime makes it gradually uncomfortable, increasing the uneasiness, plus the fast-paced plot of the story increases the atmosphere of insecurity and drama by School Days
@sarahsanchez45523 жыл бұрын
I was saddened by the ending mostly because it seemed like Makoto was finally getting it. The pressure from the situation that resulted in his promiscuity began to make him reflect on his actions for the first real time in the whole series. The chance was there that he would actually change and Katsura would finally get the boyfriend she deserves. It hurts knowing that things could have finally been okay only for it all to be torn to shreds.

This analysis of yours has been very interesting and satisfying to watch. There aren't many people out there who share a positive view of the Anime series, so coming across your videos was very refreshing. I can tell you really enjoy and respect School Days, and have a compassionate outlook on it (that is truly important in my opinion). Thank you so much for making this wonderful series. I had heard of School Days a few years back, but I've only recently gotten into it. Since I knew about the ending before I watched the actual series, I knew what was coming, but it was no less tense and upsetting. For me, the ending wasn't so much cautionary as it was a statement as to how deception, betrayal, and selfishness can destroy us and those we care about. In the end, I found myself mourning all 3 of our main characters and thinking of how nice their lives could have been. Going back to my point about your compassion, it almost broke my heart reading the comments on CrunchyRoll, where people seemed either black-hearted or insufferably simple. You, on the other hand, acknowledge that the characters, while deeply flawed and morally unbalanced, are not evil. There is no villain, nor is there a hero to this series. Towards the end, it became very difficult to identify at all with Itou, mostly because the circumstances around him, coupled with the writing, make him seem, on surface-level, to be some sort of unstoppable sociopathic sex-machine. In truth, he's really just a lonely teenager who probably went from believing he would never be loved, to thinking the bountiful sex he was having was love, and that everyone he slept with would be perfectly fine moving on as he did. Of course, he knew he was hurting people, at least part of the time, but that's not why he slept around. His actions then drove our beloved female main characters to fits of madness, depression, desperation, and, finally, their ultimate undoing. They didn't want to hurt anyone either, but when the world comes crashing down, and sanity collapses, we'd all make awful decisions. Personally, I don't believe the pregnancy was fake, but, rather, a phantom pregnancy born out of longing and the need to hold onto what Sekai perceived as love.

What really makes School days stand out for me is I am frustrated at the characters' decisions, but at the same time, they are understandable and relevant. I am sided with Setsuna from the beginning to the end. Idk I just love her character, especially when she confessed her thoughts to Katsura, making me touched. Wow, it's the first video that i watched in your channel and i'm stunned! I agree mostly with everything you said. I like how many anime watchers (especially "anitubers") claim that they are tired of simple-minded one-dimensional main characters that gets with every girl while staying "pure-hearthed" human beings (like Kirito from SAO, Ichika from IS, ...) - yet can't stand main character of School Days, who gradually changed from naive pure-hearthed guy to unstoppable playboy that realizes that hanging out with multiple girls feels good (even if it's not very nice to other girls that may have feelings for him and he just uses them). At least i can understand him a lot more than any romance, harem anime protagonists.

I watched this first when i was 15, thats now 10 years ago. Look at the time... back then the ending totally gave me PTSD. I thought about it for months. I believe Sekai was extremely manipulative. Most people say Makoto was at fault here, but in my opinion he was simply stupid. A boy in puberty that knows it no better. Its just sad that in the end - where he finally understood it all, he got stabbed just a few hours later. Its somewhat realistic in a way, but also not realistic like - everyone in this show is just stupid. But after all, these guys are teenagers right? All in all i can say this anime was stuck for me even after such a long time. And that means something. You won't see such a 'sudden' turn that shocks you this much at the end ever again.

School days overall is very brilliant, mixed in with the games, School days, Summer days, Cross days, 0verflow created a universe of diverse characters, story build up, incredible soundtracks, and a unique design that makes us fans wanting more. Yes its sad the anime is hated and was short lived but I still remember the impact it had during its release. We all wanted a good ending, but it was the tragic endings from the game that made School Days popular in the first place. The good part is, if you want an ending tailored to you, the possibility exists. As for us die hard fans, this will be an anime forever cemented in our hearts.

I have to admit these two videos made me reevaluate my stance on the anime. I wholly love the visual novel thanks to all the different choices, routes, and endings -- that alone makes it one of my favorite visual novels of all time, one that I can find myself easily invested in, but I always found the anime lacking. I always attributed this to the fact that with the VN Makoto (and whoever else's) demise was my own doing, I chose the path, but with the anime I'm just along for the ride unable to course correct, more often than not screaming at the screen. I guess that's the control freak in me. I think I'm going to watch the anime again with this video in mind and try to really appreciate it for what it is!

The ending does make me sad. For Kotonoha's sake. I just wanted her to be happy. Even if it was with Makoto, who actually seemed to realize his mistakes and wants to be with her. Sekai ruined everything. I don't get why she introduced them if she had a small crush on Makoto. It's frustrating.

Congrats on your great videos about School Days! I think you brought a point of view that actually humanizes more all the characters and makes most of their actions "feasible" (you actually even made me take off a little of the "villain" from Makoto and change it to Sekai haha) About the part you speaks about Sekai not wanting to go to the doctor, besides being a Katsura suggestion, I think that the message from Makoto implies he was suggesting Sekai to make an abortion, and thus he just wanting her to get rid of the baby altogether with coming back to Katsura was her breaking point

I think what people forget is the series isn’t an intentional lampoon on the Harem genre- 0verflow, the maker of the VN and its prequels makes it clear this is a fetish/powerplay franchise. I agree with most of your perspective on all characters. Except setsuna's. She's basicly the first domino in this tragedy. Her wayback crush on makoto sets sekai to also have a crush on him(i belive sekai was neutral before setsuna ask her to spy on makoto) allowing the entire tragedy to happen. Her friendship with Nanami (who' already a bully to kotonoha at middle school) allows her to influence the trio,Otome and possibly all of the girls to view kotonoha as an enemy (it was implied in VN). her confession in front of kotonoha is a shotgun blast to kotonoha's face causing her downfall. To me she's act under disguise of protect sekai but ultimately she's just act on her own agenda, keeping makoto at arm's length and use sekai as her proxy. I dare say that i hate her than Makoto.

School Days is an effective but clunky adaptation of the Visual Novels. Which unlike most VNs is basically an Anime itself, like that recent Batman Death in The Family experiment. The Anime is trying to put as much stuff from the VN in as possibly but on one timeline and with less runtime arguably even then any one timeline has in the VN. Setsuna is a character who's wrong doings are basically the invention of the Anime. In the VN if you get Setsuna for episode 4 it's a damn effective sub plot and actually convinced me a Makotoa/Sekai/Setsuna threesome is the most ideal outcome to all this. In the VN Hikari's "Route" is much better explained. But the biggest difference in the VN is that when the implications of all timelines are considered, Kotonoha really is the most Amoral character, at least of the main 3. I have a Twitter thread on School Days you might enjoy reading.

Hikari’s descent into sleeping with Makoto could’ve been written better. It contradicts how loyal Hikari was to Sekai earlier in the adaptation without giving an reasonable enough motive for going behind her friend’s back (Makoto being good in bed isn’t good enough for me). In contrast, Setsuna does have a good set up to her wrongful actions and makes sense. Taisuke raping Kotonoha and the build up leading up to it could’ve been written better as well. I get the guy had a crush on her and that he’s an idiot, but how the story sets it up isn’t good enough. Also, Kotonoha appears as if she wasn’t sexually violated after the incident happens. Not saying that both of these writings couldn’t work, but they’re badly executed.

How do you feel about Makoto being one of the most hated anime characters of all time?
@RogerSmith20044 жыл бұрын
People will each have their own perspective on the situation in the story and that is part of what makes it interesting to me.

This anime truly depicts the dark side of a real life Harem... You don't need a lot of women to feel loved... 1 good girl is worth 1 long-term lovelife...

I agree with this entire video and finally someone has a brain BUT WHY IS NOBODY TALKING ABOUT THE TRAGIC GRUESOME DEATH AND FINAL 5 MINUTES OF THE SHOW

Well it may be worth the time to think it over and come to your own conclusion. Either way I thank you for listening to what I had to say.

I know I said it on your other video, kind of, but the manga version of School Days is MUCH better than the anime. Drops the filler and superfluous elements and has actual character development. Makoto is more likable there as he actually regrets his mistakes and tries to better and he does not sleep around either. The sex and superfluous elements are dropped in lieu of actual character development. Also, the art style is better too.

I'll be honest, I just think its shitty because of how it was executed. The premise itself is fine, but the execution was incredibly poor imo, especially since I didnt find myself rooting for any of the characters and the only one I semi-liked, at least half the time I was just frustrated with. I have seen and liked similar shows that do the "start out seemingly average and veer hard left" thing (Higurashi, Madoka Magica, and Perfect Blue comes to mind), as well as ones that depict the dark side of teenage mentality and are just a continuous and depressing downward spiral ending in mental devastation (not an anime, but Metamorphosis/Emergence is one of my all time favorite examples of this). The way they went about it in School Days (and again, the characters), just made it extremely difficult for me to enjoy it. It was like staring at the aftermath of a train wreck instead of the actual train wreck (the latter being the vibe I assume they were going for), disturbing but not pushed far enough for it to actually affect me the way Emergence or Perfect Blue did. Not sure if Id go so far as to call it "the worst anime ever", but yea, I do find it significantly less than brilliant.

Interesting videos, strongly disagreed with a lot of it, particularly with your thoughts on the ending, but it's neat to see a positive take on the show with some solid reasoning behind it.

As much as I still hate this anime. I do like how unfortunately towards then end he finally understands how much of an asshole he has been and starts to get better. But of course too much of a good thing in a bad anime isn’t very good and it was too late.

I was legit just looking up good underrated anime to watch, and I stumbled upon this. At first I thought it was gonna be another normal one and then whem looking it up, I heard of a gruesome ending. So, I skipped to the end to see and, OH BOY! He gets stabbed, how many times? Not only that, but his killer is also murdered and has her stomach cut open... Ouch...

You know, if you aren't an asexual man, women throwing themselves at you, knowing others are doing the same and getting in your pants as well as them, kind of obviously makes it obvious that you wouldn't care to stick to one girl. I mean, they all knew he was dating someone right?

I thought we were all over school days. But here's people still making analysis videos for trainwreck of 11 episode + ending. Let me be honest. It was shit. Almosy everything about it. My guy here literally emphasizes on how the character decision makes sense and have "motivations." But let's look at this as a anime plot. Did the characters choices really make sense? The girls randomly throw themselves to the protag without almost any reason or foreshadowing. Yes. The ending was satisfying. But does that really justify 11 episodes of a hentai plot without anything anybody doing not making any sense. Meanwhile people on MAL and this video are like "this is the modern masterpiece of our time." It was shit. Go type 6 digit codes on a certain website I will refrain from mentioning here to get the exact same plot but better. People really analyzing this 1 dimensional story like it's some complex artistic show of our time.

Are folks still making vids like this? I made this over 5 years ago. As far as "modern masterpiece", I don't really consider it "modern". I watch whatever I want and I analyze it how I see it. I'm not here to vomit the consensus opinion back at anyone, nor do I care if everyone else in the world thinks it's the worst thing ever. If I think it is interesting, I'll say so, and that's what I thought. If you have any actual substance to counter any of the claims I made in my video, feel free to throw them at me in the comments, and I'll give them a fair read. But saying "Nah, it's awful and you shouldn't try analyze it or say it's good because I think it's terrible" gives me nothing to work with.

Something reflecting "reality" in that sense is not very interesting to me. As long as I understand the characters and what their thought process is and I connect to it on some level, then whether or not it would happen in this reality is inconsequential. Also you don't need to apologize for stating your opinion.
