In this video, Sadhguru explains why the concept of self-respect and self-love is unnecessary. Love and respect are one's own qualities.
The concept of self-respect and self-love have exalted one's identity quite high that nobody can bear with them even on small things. This is why so many mentors and teachers are pointing out why self-respect, self-love, self-esteem are ruining our lives. Sadhguru in his longer videos says that we need joyful, sensible people in this world whose sense of joy within himself is not controlled by anyone but himself.

Don't complicate stuff. Having some regard and value for oneself sets boundaries and therefore will help in the betterment in one's life, but the lack of it could bring self ruin. If you don't respect your life who would? Don't confuse self respect with egocentricity..

Sadhguru is fatefully incorrect in this video, and that's coming from a huge fan. I paid $70 to see him live in Los Angeles in October of 2022. It is imperative to love thyself, respect thyself, and explore thyself in order to know thyself. If you do not do these things, you will never be capable of loving, respecting, or knowing a fellow human being as much as you could otherwise.

I think Sadguru here is talking about self-respect in literal meaning which is akin to self-importance or being narcissistic down the line. But i hope there r ppl who understood the true meaning of self-respect as in taking care of yourself before doing it for others. Remeber on flights you are told to first ensure ur own safety before helping others in emergency situation? Exactly like that.

You are right. When talking about self respect people are not conscious of what it means. If people are referring certain ambience within oneself which promotes joy, love, compassion, i.e. one is working for his inner and outer wellbeing, then that definition of self respect is totally the point. But it depends on how people view about self respect. It usually is about whether somebody respects you or not because of your social status, this and that. Sadhguru was talking about this living in comparison with others and trying to raise ones importance w.r.t. this comparison. Appreciate your comment. You seem to understand it quite well as people misinterpret it often. 🙏🏻

Most of these trends result due to human experience becoming more and more miserable. Do we really require self-respect to have a joyful experience of life or is it just another psychological drama that happened because people couldn't treat one another sensibly and joyfully? It may be relevant in this current culture of the world. But as a throbbing life, as we are, all the psychological makeup disappears if we are fully aware of it.

@@ellipticalsource That could be answered either way. I think the world displays a false sense of self respect that is more like a mask for the opposite. But being able to live joyfully and freely comes from a place of innate worth, that maybe doesn't need to be defined or "announced", but if it were, I think it would fall into the category of self love and respect

Hi Callum, Sadhguru says that love is what happens when you have pleasant emotions. Love is not about someone or me or something. Love is a quality of us that happens because of pleasant/sweet emotions. In this way loving someone or loving myself becomes irrelevant. If you have that sweetness of emotions in you would you need to again excercise self love?

@@ellipticalsource To say that love is a quality is impractical. That basically kills love because the word quality instills a sense of stillness, or a specific geometry. A boulder can have a certain quality, and boulders don't really move much. To say someone has a quality to their love is messed up because love is supposed to be demonstrated with action, pragmatically speaking.

I like that concept that I respect others because of my own quality. However I believe that feeling worthy and being able to recieve love as well as not being willing to stay in a situation where you are not respected, are very important places to come to. If I truly have self respect, I don't need it from anyone else. If I am full of love, I don't need love from anyone else, but I am free to recieve and enjoy it without the other feeling any obligations or expectations!

Hi KimberLiana,😊 thank you for articulating it. This is about us becoming the source of joy for ourselves rather than looking out for it from someone. And because you are full of pleasant emotions like joy or love, whatever expression comes out from you to others reflects that inner quality such that this concept of self respect or need for self esteem or need to feel worthy simply vanishes. You just treat others like how you are feeling inside. And we will find appropriate response for any situation be it disrespectful or so from an elevated state of mind. But without this pleasantness or sweetness of emotions, if we keep subjecting ourselves to self respect, we tend to become narcissistic or self centered.

Dudes never woken up with his hand in a bag of nachos, in a t-shirt that no longer covers his belly. I did meditation once where I got to a deep level of mindfulness, then I imagined hearing him say the words "...and now....a professional bullshit artist, hahahaha". I woke up laughing. I think he's like a philosopher who sees the wisdom in being a windup artist, contrarian. I like his stuff but it winds me up. If I pretended to be him, I'd ask someone to fill up a glass of water for me, when they gave the glass to me I'd poor it into the sink but thank them genuinely for wanting to help me. That kind of sideways mad point making. That's my interpretation.

Self respect isn’t giving oneself respect in this way. Self respect is respecting what one IS (Mind, Body Soul). “I” (the Egoistic Mind) can be detrimental to one’s True existence, however, this Mind can transform into a self-respecting Mind if one can see what is to be respected (Respect one’s body= physical well-being; respecting one’s Mind= achievement of mental awareness; respecting one’s Soul= awareness of all as One.).

I challenge that he is speaking against being “self absorbed” not “self respect”. There is a difference for sure. Being self absorbed is arrogance, narcissistic. Self respect is brushing your teeth, washing yourself, maintaining a clean bill of health, working out etc etc that doesn’t take away from your experiences with people and life… being arrogant does.
