This needs to be spread far and wide! Check out video by british Deaf youtuber Jazzy called "Mum's telling a story about my deaf life." The mum says something really touched me - "If you've got one hearing baby and one deaf, and you can only communicate with the hearing child, what does that say to the deaf child?! that theyre not important?!"

I taught my two sons some signs when they were babies. We did SEE because I was unaware that ASL had it's own grammar. My youngest in turn did not talk until he was almost 5 and is Sound sensitive. I am so thankful for your language. It has helped me as a mother and person. We are now learning ASL. I will be home schooling him now due to health issues and he asked if ASL could be one of his courses and if we could do sign for most of the day (he will be 7 on Saturday). Thank you so much you are an inspiration.

Thanks for posting this. I used to be somewhat proficient in ASL. I was a teacher in a special program in my school board for Deaf and Hard of Hearing kids. They were fully integrated into the school day and had an interpreter with them for all of their classes. All lessons were delivered in ASL. I was a home room teacher one year and did other courses with them as well since I did complete my Level 8 sign. It has been a very long while since I signed with anyone though and my visual is kind of shaky. (I can't think of the word in English, only ASL, ironically!) Despite my ASL loss, when I had my daughter, I spoke a lot of ASL with her. It has been shown that babies are pretty visually keyed in and teaching ASL can help them with language acquisition in their mother tongue as well. ASL also helps babies feel more in control of their language since they can sign more easily and earlier than they can speak, so parents who teach their babies sign will find they throw fewer tantrums while trying to communicate since they have a form of communication that is easier for them. My entire family is hearing but we all know a little bit of sign! Both my parents learned a fair amount of ASL in college and so they taught me and my brother basic signs growing up! I like to believe that they taught us so that we could sign to communicate instead of “talk with our mouth full” at the dinner table. :)

I agree 100% with teaching both a hearing and deaf child sign language. My cousin is Deaf and she never knew ASL. She is 40 yrs old and had to read lips her entire life and ask people to repeat themselves. I am hearing and I am an ASL 4 student and compared to her, I am fluent in HER language. The ignorance saddens me. I always said whether my child was deaf or not, their first language will be ASL. It's one of the reasons, along with my fascination of a non-verbal language and culture, as to why my major is American Sign Language. Great video! 😊👍🏾

Damn made my morning (again) , yes I watched this video like more than one times. "WE NEED TO CHANGE THAT" pretty much strong statements. I will say every doctors in every hospitals in the world need change views or response to parents when receiving the result from babies s hearing test. That only way will improve the deaf humans systems or community even for parents. I think that's what Nyle is working on it? Aly, your life and I have same related except hearing devices. But same shit it's all about hearing and orally blah blah blah. This video definitely NEED to be on hot viral. Cheers!

Hi there! I am a big fan of your videos and appreciate you exposing the world on D/deaf/HOH culture. I am newly HOH and notice that it’s difficult to find deaf/HOH communities in the PNW. Do you feel you have the support as accessible as some other places like Maryland and DC?

My cousin's son has the opposite issue. He and his wife are deaf but their child is hearing. He is 4 years old and my cousin who is 2 can speak more words and more clearly because he hasn't been progressive in providing a speech tutor to teach his son spoken English. I can't hardly communicate to him and simple statements like "who's she?" Pointing to his mom. He can sign but he doesn't speak yet he is perfectly hearing.

This entire video encompasses the reason I chose Deaf Education as my major. I've even talked some of my friends who've recently had babies to start teaching their babies basic signs, and they're going to learn ASL themselves as well. :)
