The farmers voted only slightly higher as a demographic than the general public and slightly less than the countryside population. Do you think every farmer voted brexit?

I don't know. I think it was understandable at the time to hope that the Tories would rethink their obsession with free markets in the light of the "great realignment". If the Tories had abandoned their neo-liberal obsessions and engaged in a bit of protectionism, state subsidy and border control then they would have secured their position. But they are either so out of touch or so committed to their free market globalism that they misinterpreted or ignored the wishes of the electorate. The bigger shame is that no left wing party was prepared to make the left wing case for independence.

But let's just have a bit of whataboutery instead of just acknowledging the fact that trump fcuked the us farmers... 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Consequences are important. They’re paying the price for their brexit vote. But, they also need to be held to account for their complicity in perpetuating lunacy. We need to bring back reverence for facts and truth. I don’t believe these farmers have reached that. I’m pretty sure they still think they got the ‘wrong brexit’ due to mismanagement.

I was made aware of the American soy bean market when following American politics during the Trump era. American soy bean farmers sold the vast majority of their produce on the Asian - mainly China - markets. Trump started a trade war with China by implementing high tariffs on Chinese steel, China retaliated by specifically targeting soy bean, pork farmers. Many of them lost trade that they had taken years to cultivate and went out of business as a result.

That ridiculous £350 million "savings" with Brexit was promised to go: 1. To the NHS. 2. To the farmers. 3. To levelling up. Even if there was an actual saving, which clearly never was the case, how did people not see this? Sorry, at this point we can only hope that all these people with scarily low critical intelligent will learn their lesson and apologise for their treatment of everyone trying to make them understand very basic facts and for the consequences of their own choices, imposed onto everyone else. Swallow your silly pride, apologise, and work towards a solution. The Tories is not it.

I do wonder about the overlap between the currently protesting farmers and the farmers who voted Remain. Imagine being such a farmer and tuning in. You're told to deal with the result "you farmers" brought about, while actually protesting the changes that you saw coming when voting Remain. I can't really find precise numbers on how farmers voted, as they range from 53% to 60% for leave, but in any scenario at least 40% of farmers are kinda shoved aside by the central claim of "you voted for it, now deal with it".

. A very important point about farmers was not made yesterday which is that farmers are excellent producers but the majority of small/medium sized farms have nothing to do with the sales process so no nothing about it including export. For instance, dairy farmers. They are excellent at animal husbandry and field management but at the end of the day the tanker picks up the milk and that is their job done. All the sales takes place from a co-operative. Even the unwanted male calves are sold at the local market. A different company will be in charge of export. So, they were promised that subsidies would be replaced which is what they understood but did not really understand the impact of trade barriers to the sales of their produce because they didn't take part in that process.

Any farmer who has managed to survive in the industry for any length of time has to understand the complex interaction between trade agreements, input costs, competitive dynamics with other similar products and financing considerations. It’s a really tough and finely balanced equation. I struggle to believe that someone who for their survival constantly navigates these dynamics wouldn’t, if they gave it any level of thought, realise the disaster that brexit would present. It seems to me that there was a huge level of cognitive dissonance that led to their support for brexit. This dissonance was likely driven by an antagonism towards the city elite and the “globalists” who they don’t think value their profession. This anger is somewhat well placed in so far as the “city elite” doesn’t respect the skill of farmers as business people. However in fighting back against the globalist elites they cut off their nose. So I have sympathy for their annoyance at being regarded as below other commerce. But ultimately they shot themselves in the foot.

Like the fisherfolk who have worked the boats for generations, farmers have worked the land, their land, with lineages that can be traced back centuries. You'd think with all of that accumulated knowledge they could see a few chancers who'd not done an honest days work in their lives from a mile off. Farmers and fishermen were taken, hook line and sinker, by a couple of know nothing, silver spooned charlatans from the big smoke. They all claim to be free marketeers. They've sown the wind and will reap the whirlwind. If you sincerely believe in political and economic policies that amount to the earth being flat or gravity being an illusion then you deserve a harsh lesson from that no nonsese tutor, reality.

Slavery in the enlightend African countries of Libya and South Sudan has returned. Rather than callers complaining about their ancestors selling their kith and kin should we not do something about the 30,000 slaves.

As a 60+ person who was until recently, a life-long centre-right Conervative voter, I have no issues with anyone who voted for Johnson in 2019, because the only alternative as Prime Minister was a deeply unpatriotic Marxist. Let's separate that issue from Brexit. Brexit was a huge mistake in terms of economics, and the longer we spend ignoring that mistake, the poorer we will become compared to our European neighbours. Farmers, fisherman, the Irish, business and the public in general were lied to. Someone high in politics needs to find the backbone to suggest rejoining the Customs Union as a first step towards mending our economy, and ending the misery that many UK citizens are currently facing. Ignoring this tough decision perpetuates our gradual decline. We will rejoin one day. The question is when, and how much more relaively poor we need to become, compared to our European neighbours, before we dare to honestly address the issue that Brexit was a mistake.

How? Brexit and Brexit related damage can't be undone. But hey, for us in the EU27 🇪🇺, the Brexit soap opera is great entertainment.

@EllieD.Violet Yes, Brexit damaged society, but there are numerous structural issues within society that are nothing to do with Brexit. Rejoining the EU won't solve the problems caused by privatisation of the NHS and other public services, it won't fix crumbling schools, it won't solve the vast problems of wealth inequality, it won't solve the housing crisis, it won't deal with the backlog in the justice system nor increase the capacity of prisons, it won't remove the institutional racism, sexism, or classism within society, it won't regenerate poverty stricken towns and cities, and it won't repair the social care system. These are just a few of the major problems we need to solve, and in order to do that we need to stop arguing over things like Brexit. Yes it had damaging consequences and was a terrible decision that only made things worse, but there are much more pressing issues that will be only be solved if we stop squabbling over things that have already happened and start forcing the government to deal with these issues, rather than allowing them to divide us over surface level problems.

..... and if there are droughts or floods or similar adverse conditions, let's say in Europe, and the EUropean farmers stop selling to the UK as they did with, e.g., tomatoes last spring, then you'll get literally 100% of your food from ..... your CPTPP buddies? The US? China? If you terminate your at present ca 35-40% food produced by British farmers, that is.

JOB still trying to work out how many war crimes is too many, the answer is one James, that's not an opinion it's just counting, and that is why sitting on the fence for 5 months with a platform as large as you have is disgusting and a failure to give a voice to all those people, women and children in their thousands, you should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself, even now in the clip above you sound more upset at the damage to the Isreal governments reputation around the world than to the suffering of the people dying from starvation.
