Y'all in the USA have more efficient aluminum/aluminium window options than we do as standard. Most of our aluminium windows and doors in Australia for new builds are pretty much all single pane, clear (non-low E) with no thermal breaks. Thermally broken aluminium doors and windows here are ridiculously expensive. Asking for vinyl or thermally broken aluminium ends up tripling or quadrupling the cost for a new build glazing wise.

Can we get a head to head comparison of Aluminum to Fiberglass (specifically Pella’s Impervia). I am and ing a hard time understanding why someone would pick one ver the other. Aside from maybe cost of Aluminum being a little higher (I would think) aren’t we talking essentially the same/similar durability, performance, strength etc? What reasons would you pick aluminum over Fiberglass and vice versa, what reasons would you pick Fiberglass over Aluminum? Appreciate the video content as always.
@HoustonWindowExperts

That is a good idea, I'll have to do that very soon. The quick answer is that aluminum can make some sizes that fiberglass can't.
@AlanBurke

Another benefit of aluminum over fiberglass, in addition to size options, is shape. Fiberglass just can't bend like aluminum so you can't have arched windows.

There are benefits to each type of material in those conditions. One of the benefits to aluminum is that it's typically four to eight times stronger than vinyl. Therefore, you can get larger sizes of Windows because the frames will have a higher design pressure rating than a vinyl window would.

I hate being lied to or upsaled . So who do I believe? 1 guy told me that aluminum is better in south Florida and another told me vinyl is better . So guy that pushed aluminum said that vinyl is only good for houses up north and that it actually preserves more eat in the house then aluminum ? What is true and what is false?
@HoustonWindowExperts

If you're in florida, and you are anywhere near the coast, you are probably going to need a impact rated window. If that is the case, the aluminum would be a better choice. If you do not need an impact rated window, I think you would be fine with aluminum or vinyl. We sell both in Houston and we have a very hot and humid climate. They both hold up equally well. If you'd like to get a quote from a window company near you that we have vetted and we know them to be a fair and honest company, please check out JeffsList.com

Hi Jeff, I am in Dallas where it is either extremely hot or extremely cold. I was talking to a window company today and mentioned these thermo-break aluminum windows. They say the only reason these aluminum windows are able to pass the energy code is because they took all the numbers and averaged it. And with the new energy code coming out in October of this year, these alum window will not be able to pass the new code. What are your thoughts on this?
@HoustonWindowExperts
@HoustonWindowExperts 7 ай бұрын
I'm not familiar with that explanation. I don't think any of the aluminum products will meet the new energy code standards. Different municipalities will create their own standards for windows. Perhaps that's what they're referring to?

Do these aluminum windows sweat in the winter?
@HoustonWindowExperts
@HoustonWindowExperts 2 жыл бұрын
Sharon, thank you for watching and your question. A Thermally Improved Aluminum window will do a very good job of reducing condensation. However, all other window materials are actually better. If your aluminum window is NOT Thermally Improved, it will definitely create condensation. This is particularly important in colder climates. Every window has a CR (Condensation Rating). The higher the number the better it performs. Ask for this data and compare. If you're looking for a great window company near you, please check out JeffsList.com

Does aluminum make your window glass condensate more?
@HoustonWindowExperts
@HoustonWindowExperts 2 жыл бұрын
It does not have much bearing at all on condensation. The main difference is that it is likely to create frost in a colder climate from the condensation that has formed on the frame. That is due to the fact that aluminum is a greater conductor of heat and cold than other material types. I would make sure, if you're going to use aluminum, that you get one that is thermally broken if you live in a cold climate.

Hi Jeff! Thanks for your videos it’s very helpful content! Question: I live in the mild mountains of Big Bear California, starting new construction and needing a black option. Painted Milguard Trinsik, or Anderson 100 seem to be what my shop is steering me into. I don’t care for the fit and finish of the Anderson and painting the vinyl on the Trinsik seems like a problem waiting to happen with possible peeling etc. Makes me think black anodized aluminum would be the best bet. But i’m trying to get a best guess on the efficiency loss of thermally broken aluminum vs vinyl. Would you guess the loss at 50% comparatively? We get a ton of sun in Big Bear and the temps mid day don’t stay below freezing for weeks on end in the winter. But does get cold at night. Best guess? 🤷🏻‍♂️
@HoustonWindowExperts
@HoustonWindowExperts 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and your question. I'd avoid the aluminum in any place where you have a "winter" that is longer than 30-45 days. If you're looking for black windows, consider the Amsco Studio series because it is a Capstock instead of paint. You could also consider the Pella Impervia fiberglass window. I also like the Anlin window but it would be Black on the exterior but not the interior. I do like Milgard better than the Andersen but since they were purchased by MI a couple of years ago their quality and service took a hard left turn.

@@HoustonWindowExperts Thanks for the swift reply! I’ll check out those other brands, unfortunately my mtn shop up here doesn’t carry them. Also per code up here in the mtns there’s some special rating or something in the glass that has to be done to pass inspections here… Funny you say that about MI because my shop used to carry them until they put much bigger sales minimums on the shop to sell them. I would say that it never stays below freezing here for more than a day or two, sun comes out and warms and melts everything. Also per code my R values for my walls are mental, I think near R40, so maybe they would make up for where the windows would be less efficient? My guy was also saying that the trinsic line can come with cap color as well in the vinyl but it’s much more expensive, does that sound right?
@HoustonWindowExperts
@HoustonWindowExperts 2 жыл бұрын
If your winter is mild, I'd consider the Milgard Thermally Improved Aluminum. It's a very good product. Milgard also makes a fiberglass window that is probably their best overall product. Again, the MI issue remains.

That's a tough question to answer. There are over 100 brands of aluminum windows in the United states. One brand can be as low as $300 and another could be as much as $3,000. You might want to go to Home Depot or Lowe's and check on their website for products near you. Sorry, I wish I could be of more help.

Installation is equally as important as the quality of the window. It could be that the sound is coming around the side of the window and into the home. It can also be coming through your vented soffit, air ducts, weep holes, etc. Windows are typically not the only entry point for sound in a home.
