I think guided fishing is something worth experiencing, particularly if you’re traveling to an exotic destination and/or chasing a specific exotic species, or are new to the sport. If fly fishing is your thing, doing a trip with a skilled guide is invaluable. That being said, the satisfaction of doing it on your own and cracking the code beats being guided on to a fish. Plus we don’t all have deep enough pockets to do it. Subscribing to modern fishing as a youngster was probably a lot better value for money in the end, Steve’s been my personal fishing guide for almost 30 years 😉

I learnt French and Czech styles when living in London. I see Jo wearing Orvis and it reminded me of their shop near Farlows at Pall Mall out of which they ran guided days and they were fun. There are other variants including no fly line just an extra long leader. Good memories.

i grew up in tasmania but now live in usa. I learnt to fly fish only in USA, only bait fished when in australia. Whenever i come back i always hire a guide to go to rivers and lakes. why - to learn.

Little spoons, in-line spinners (Celtas etc) and little hard bodies. Bream-size softies work well, too.

some outstanding guides that know the area and species well. I read total bs from charter operators total bs hype but know plenty of guns too. Graham Baker on the U;timate in bermagui back in the heyday yellowfin days was EPIC simply unmatchable at the time.

You do realise that guiding is a full time job for most of these people, don’t you? Does your local plumber, electrician, builder, doctor or school teacher work for free? Would you happily continue doing your job without getting paid for it?
