atwood’s decision to only include events/practices that had already occurred in history is just pure genius. it really opens people’s eyes to the facts that sexism and the patriarchy as a whole are not things to be talked about as if they’ve passed and grounds this story in reality. what an amazing read!

And yet we continue to demonize the only society, Western Civilization, in the History of Man that has eliminated the Patriarchy. What is left of the Patriarchy in the Western World are the female whisperers in the ears of men, "wishing" for their men to obtain better societal status and power. And our inability to overcome Political Correctness to criticize cultures around the world numbering in the 2.5 billion that continue to treat women as slaves, instead opting to tear down Western Civilization for their mis-use of preferred pronouns.

@@Omnipotent8383 There will never be equality because biology prevents equality, a 5'0" person can't play tennis like a 6'4". Men can never feel the pain of birth and women can never understand the rage of men given our levels of testosterone. Equality is not what should define Utopia, Freedom is what defines Utopia. But even freedom will always be the tug of war between the need of the Individual versus the demands of the group society in which the person lives.

I'm thinking of writing a Dystopian novel of my own of a VERY similar nature. Not so much in the oppression of women, as the oppression of a Theocratic government. This approach is genius, and I plan to steal it for myself. However, I'm putting a twist on it. Every single event or practice that occurs in the book, at the end, is going to have a citation/headline so people know it really happened. Cool, right?

Sombrero Cat Studios I agree but disagree. Already many teachers I know use such videos, and I love these videos, but when a teacher does it so much, it feels impersonal. They’re job is to teach, to stand in front of the room and deliver a lecture to broaden my understanding and spark curiosity. Not all teachers do this, but sometimes you get lucky. Sure these videos are great and the teachers should provide them as a Studying tool or something in that sort, but maybe they should not use it so often. My favorite teacher had barely showed videos, and talked like he was trying to sell something to us, convincing us and grabbing our attention with every word. He had used a few videos, but only few had actually explained anything, he was there to explain it. I’m not saying that these videos aren’t good, they’re much better then some teachers can explain. But if more teachers were like the one I had mentioned, I would be interested in school much more.

When I was reading this book, I cult that help but draw parallels between this story and what happened in my country, Afghanistan. Before the Russians invaded, and the conception of the taliban, my country was a small place where people lived happy lives, education was free and women wore mini skirts. Then came the radical religious, tool women’s rights away and silenced them behind burkas. Women became things, silenced and in the shadows, while the religious and righteous men became brutes and savages. Books were burned, along with pictures, TVs etc.

I loved a handmaid‘s tale. It’s so insightful. It’s so powerful. The story of feminism. And how it can be suppressed if not actively fought for. It’s empowering. Margaret Atwood has a tremendous gift for storytelling. Not only is the original handmaid‘s tale book great. But the sequel she wrote last year was great as well. I fully recommend that book as well. And really any Margaret Atwood book.

This book is a masterpiece in many ways. It bravely takes on heavy topics. Also I found great analogs from the book, for example the exploitation that is done to the handmaidens are in almost every way same as we do to cows and other animals. It is just sinister to think that any living being should go through something so oppressive and nervewrecking.
