Once many years ago I knocked out a guy with a side kick to the solar plexus during sparring. It was more of panic reaction when he came with barrage of punches to the face. He was conscious but his breath stopped and technically its a knockout, my first and only one by fluke. It took sometime to revive him and i had to kneel and face the other side, feeling guilty all the time. So i accidentally discovered a way of stopping a charging opponent.

I trained Muay Thai after earning my Nidan in Karate and used side kick and other Karate kicks very effectively against the kick boxers because they are not used to seeing them and they do work. Low side kick to knee or shin for self defense is good the low round kick to the thigh which you have in Karate but I do think MT is better at it works as well.

Yep, I train mt and tkd and I find the sidekick to land at a higher percentage in Muay Thai. Quite possible as you said, the Muay Thai folks just don’t see them as often. There are side teeps in Muay Thai and there are some pretty famous Thai fighters that have used them really effectively. It doesn’t seem very common though. Perhaps added to the Muay Thai thing is most of the guys at my gym I spar with train for mma, whereas I only do striking and the more bladed stance that makes sidekicks more effective or at least less telegraphed isn’t as good for grappling and clinching. Not that I would know from experience since I don’t really grapple, but that’s what I’ve been told.

Side Kicks are savage, they are tied with Oblique Kicks (Rear Leg Diagonal Stomp to Just Above The Knee) for me personally in terms of my favourite kick to throw, the combination of an Oblique Kick into a Lead Leg Side Kick is nasty as hell 🔥 Crunch the lead knee with the Oblique Kick and either sneak that sharp, snappy Side Kick into the rib cage or if you are feeling particularly mean shoot that Side Kick into the lead knee of your opponent to seal the deal with that hyperextension of the knee joint (not in a sparring context, of course!) 🔥 Great video man!

In my utmost humble opinion. “ Fighting is relativity in motion, never expect only respond, as it is ones opponent within context that dictates tactics” “ There are levels to this game” -Firas Zahabi. “ Never underestimate your opponent” Spot on sir, and I agree totally with your observation. There will always be individuals that are able to apply/ perform/ utilize techniques to the extent that oneself is not able to, therefore to limit oneself and one’s ability of being capable due to bias or regressive thinking, which in turn enables cognitive dissonance and limits growth is the downfall of many a martial artist. Just because oneself is not able to find success with a sound performed/ verified technique does not render said technique useless. It’s like stating “ I’m only a saw wielding carpenter” and thus neglecting all the viable tools at the carpenters disposal. A truly skilled practitioner is adaptable to the point that he acknowledges the facts and utilize and adapts flawlessly within the aspects and contexts of where the context of the fight: altercation is. One should strive to be as complete as one possibly can. Find the elements that one excels at, refine it to perfection, and from there implement strategies and techniques from all aspects in regards to fighting/ self defense Learn to grapple/ wrestle/ clinch/ strike/ ground game, as I believe one needs it all to be as complete as one can be, while all the while being aware of one’s forte( specific attributes/ desires) as to able to keep the fight where one wants/ needs it to be kept. Sincere and utmost humble regards. Fellow martial artist Tom Framnes. Norway.

As someone who has only ever fought a few times because I had to (self defense), but is otherwise completely inexperienced and without martial arts training, I don't got much regarding their effectiveness to say. But what I _can_ say is that side kicks simply feel plain good to throw, just if you're doing it at the air. Like, is it just me or is it not an especially satisfying motion? Feels way better than doing a front kick, yet still easy enough to attempt that I as a novice doesn't have to go to yoga for 2 years and get a black belt to learn how to roundhouse kick a 7 feet tall guy in the head. And I think that satisfaction level should at least count for something lol

i think reason why most people think that side kicks don't work is poor technique, they don't see any damage with it, since Olympics destroyed old school Karate and Takewondo (SO FUCK THEM!) they teach "snap" side kicks (FUCK them again) instead of knee up and pivoting the foot, which can send anyone back to 1920s.

OK guys. Let me clarify my comment a bit. The side kick as the first strike might work if you have longer limbs to your advantage (say Wonderboy Thompson, israel adesanya, Jon Jones ...) but even so, it wouldn't be a KO strike, more like a jab or defensive move to keep distance and if you get lucky, the kick might startle the other guy a sec and allow you to move in. A KO side kick would come AFTER other moves if you could work it in a combination OR in a fury of exchange your side kick somehow finds its target.

Side kicks works when you are in a narrow path on the hedge of a clift and someone attack you from the side. Having said so, sidekicks are more difficult technicaly to master that they looks like even at middle/shudan level . Getting yours at jodan/High level require talent and flexibilty,, far more than what the average karateka can reach. So good sidekicks probably works, crappy ones probably less. 😁😀😂

I disagree, I have white and yellow belts that throw great sidekicks! It’s about teaching them to their level

@@SenseiSeth I have no doubt that you are a good teacher but a least may be we can agree that sidekicks are very interresting to work because of its traps. What I have commonly came accross (strating by myseft) is: Aborted leg chamber, Bump poping back, upper body projeted back wile kicking leg get over streched, twisted body turning side-kick in an half 'soso' ushiro/back kick at impact ... Not obvious to keep a good body alignment along with suffisant power and wiegh projection forward at impact. Have a nice co-leading worshop with Mike, I would have loved to join, but Europe is far ...

Yeah side kicks do not work. Side teeps on the other hand do. Close, far, low, high, spin, jump, push, snap etc.

Great video. Was that Wonderboy? My half cent: People who proclaim this sort of ignorant nonsense get my blood boiling. The sidekick is one of the most sound and devastating weapons one can have. Furthermore, one is less likely to hurt oneself due to the contact area of the heel [unlike a Muay Thai kick which can be checked and is often telegraphed and can put one out of position due to the extreme pivot off the opposite planted foot]. EVERY sound technique has a counter, but every sound technique also has a place. I've thrown people [3rd Dan TKD instructor] off front snap kicks, thrown Muay Thai black belts off their low kicks [easier], but the side kick, in my opinion, is trickier [if the person knows how to disguise it] as the "line" of attack can be altered and the body [if done correctly] maintains it base and balance [as you demonstrate]. It's almost the long staff of kicks if one knows how to employ it and where to hit, but the surface area of the foot makes it harder to parry and advance. The side-kick can even be effective at a closer range than most realize. "Fighters" blame techniques for their own lack of understanding; this is the mark of a fool. Even most "black-belts" and "masters" have little understanding of their art beyond kata [or forms] and speculated applications [a source of similar frustration]. But many of these arts, while forgotten, diluted, and passed down, have great purpose and meaning far more time-tested than the current fads. True martial arts have deeper wells than most MMA gyms, but people blame the leaky buckets [minds of teachers] who draw from the well of knowledge provided rather than using their own bucket with thought and consideration. Teaching any scoffer is like describing color to the blind; pointless and counterproductive. The Fool learns nothing from his folly, but it is the folly of the Fool which instructs the wise. Never teach a one-armed man to clap.

David Williams martial arts has a lot of aspects to it. Beginners tend to stick to what they started out with, and fight against what they hear later. The more experience the martial artist, the less you usually hear them bash stuff

Well after all that science we can now finally lay it to rest and maybe have a nice service and obituary for the clearly defunct side kick?

I know you are Ironic about this video AND I know you have a lot I mean A LOOAAAD of jokes about TKD. But modern competition sparring seems to get the side kick to work. I know I now get a lot of hate for it but: sb of you ever get caught with a cut kick to the liver/rips/solar plexus? Even with gear/protectors it hurts lmao and there are some coaches who are like oldschool and say you have to be able to KO the other player thorught the gear. lol Just sayin.
