Did you do one on side thrust kick, kekomi? The difference in the hips and the foot pivot. Just a thought. You can get hurt if the hip mechanics are wrong and you don't pivot the foot on your supporting leg. This I personally know!!!

Our 3 dan shotkan teaches this so that the hip/pelvis turns to the side where you are kicking. Otherwise it makes the kick kind of unnatural joint movement and makes the kick really hard or even impossible, at least if you dont have extra good mobility. Also in my opinion after studying several different MA styles I agree that with my sensei that the pelvis twist is imporant factor to execute this right. Im traning Shotokan right now. I know that senseis have different opinions how things should be done and there will always be disagreements even everybody try to do their best teaching method. Everyone is different, everyones joints/mobility are different. For me trying to do this with pelvis straight forward feels kind of dangerous, like you are trying to do something agaisnt your joint ability to move, but Im not the most flexible guy. I continue to do this with pelvis twist as Ive been teached. This must be the hardest kick in karate, at least when your aim is higher than chudan level. Actually when I see you executing this in 2:10 your pelvis is twisted to the side of the kick, not straight front =) Anyway your kick looks really good pelvis twisted or not.

Wonderful tutorial! If I may ask a question Some instructors tell me that it should not rotate however I do notice that the higher some people do kiage the supporting foot does move allowing more hip involvement in the kick. It is not as much as in kekome but there is something there going on. What are you thoughts on that? I wonder because if I don't move the supporting foot at all sometimes I feel some discomfort in the knee of the supporting foot. I don't get it as much anymore but it use to be an issue.

The Yoko Geri Keage is one of those kicks that is in fact a bag to encompass many kicks. There are so many variations and everybody who explains how to do it seems to be doing it in a slightly different way. So my "wisdom" comes to think of yoko geri keage as MANY kicks. Also, using the edge of the foot is not easy depending on your physiology. So that's one tricky kick. The important movemnt of this kick, to me, no matter how you "finish", is the snap movement, which differenciate it form kekomi.

Hello Sensei Yusuke how are things? Excellent video on the side kick, sorry however I believe you meant to say lifting your big toe upwards, when elevating the knee to the chest level, prior to thrusting the foot to the side, fully extended to perform the side kick? My favourite kick in Karate is the descending axe kick (落とし蹴り) quite popular in Kyokushin Karate. I hope that all is well with your new job and your Shotokan Karate training. I am not sure if you might have already answered this in any of your other videos, however is Waku the name of your own Shotokan Karate dojo? Also what does it mean? I also assume that your actual current rank would be that black belt third dan if I am not mistaken? Always great to see your instructional videos, as well as those on Japanese Karate terminology and its meaning in English, Osu!🇲🇽🇦🇺🥋😊✌👍🤟🙏

A very helpful video. Thank you for your efforts in making it. Just 2 points if that's okay.. 1. The video is somehow reversed (I understand this is common in video editing). You can see your dogi appears to be tied on the left hip, so obviously that can't be correct. And so when you are talking about left yoko keg, it appears to be right kick in the video. 2. In English we don't refer to the big toe as 'thumb'. It's just called the big toe. I know from my Japanese friends that this is a common mistake, and while it is logical, it's unfortunately incorrect. Again, I like your work & how you are trying your best to help people enjoy karate. Gambate kudasai!!

@KarateDojowaKu4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking! I would like to understand the background information behind your question. In what kind of scenario did you use the phrase Shime?
@BelloBudo0074 жыл бұрын
@@KarateDojowaKu Thanks very much for your reply. About 'Shime' Firstly I may not be spelling it correctly but it sounded similar to 'kime;' just with the Shi sound in front on 'me'. To me it sounded like 'shee may'. But I could be wrong. The scenario was the Japanese instructor trying to give us an understanding of how to use muscles. He demonstrated as if he was squeezing out the water from a dish cloth. I had never heard the word before but I think he was trying to say that many of us were confusing Shime with Kime.

Hi Sensei, Where on the foot would be the point of impact against a bag? The side of the sole or the bottom of the sole, and is the heel involved? Thanks!
@Elurin2 жыл бұрын
I don't think you want to be kicking a heavy bag with this kind of kick; it's a side snap kick, as opposed to a side thrust kick. Nice to use defensively if someone is rushing you, but since most of the force is applied in an upward motion (as far as I can tell) you aren't going to get a lot of power going forward.
