There is a lake at the beginning of the game lol In Henry’s apartment, you find that he has photographed the church and the lake because it felt serene while he vacationed in Silent Hill. As a player it’s ominous because anybody that goes there is screwed lol, but for Henry, it was a lovely memory, and you can empathize with him, because he’s just a innocent man that was savagely brought into a nightmare by a murdering psychopath.

I absolutely loved Silent Hill 4. Silent Hill 4 is to the Silent Hill games what "Halloween 3 Season of the Witch" was to the Halloween films. Yea, both Silent Hill 4 and Halloween 3 may have gone on the deep end and polarized fans in the process. But both were faithful and true to the creative minds behind them. John Carpenter always envisioned Halloween as a series of self-contained stories. Similarly, Team Silent Hill always wanted to explore new paths with Silent Hill. Decades later, I feel like fans are FINALLY coming around.

SH4 is masterclass at story telling. Its world is no longer only scary or melancholic, But innocence getting shredded into pieces in front of your eyes as the plot reveals it self, It's truely dark and hanuting! That's perhaps why in time I'v forgotten the annoyances I had with its first played playthrough. Feeling grateful to have experienced it! Great video!

Well you aren't alone, my brother's second favorite Silent Hill game behind the first.
@Impalingthorn Жыл бұрын
I grew up playing the original four games religiously. Silent Hill 1 was my favorite there for a while, then I learned to appreciate Silent Hill 2 a little more but still preferred 1, while always sorta no on board with Silent Hill 3 for reasons I couldn't pin at the time (Ultimately boiled down to the game doing nothing better than the first two games and failing to make its own mark outside of Heather herself and some combat elements). But 4? For the longest time, I only had the demo of the game to play with... And it was one of the scariest f***ing things I played in my life. The game has its bugs, sure, but good god; the atmosphere is drenched in the uncanny, the enemy designs are horrific, ghosts cause me perpetual anxiety when they are in the room and the story, I would personally argue, is better than 2's. Maybe it's not as clever as 2, but lord have mercy the full context of what is going on and the murder mystery aspect to the game lends so much to it. It's one of the only times where I feel like a horror story was made scarier by fully explaining what was going on. Spoilers: Going through most of the game unsure of what is happening only for the context of the situation to be that some madman is trying to awaken the room you have seen as a safe place and rebirth it as that man's MOTHER... And the room itself functioning as a womb which connects to different worlds through its umbilical cord-like tunnels is just... EUGH. I can't imagine the look on some people's faces when they realized what the room symbolized and why it was progressively becoming fleshier and less hospitable throughout the game.

Iirc the Forest part is in Silent Hill. You do go there during the game. The water prison is also in SH, I believe, although the version visited is a distorted version of the place, it’s how Walter reminds himself of the place. It’s been a long time since I played the game, but I believe those 2 spots mentioned are located in Silent Hill proper.

The hate is easy, this is an incomplete game, but some people didn't get it, that Henry can't explore a place in a free will, bc he isn't there, he is in a memory of Walter, Walter is going to a place, then Henry followed that, but as a memory, not like a real travel. This is an example of paranoia, on this condition, people has fear to going of a place, but live the events by the memories of the others. Team Silent again, right in the spot.

It got hate because it felt different (also, SH3 left a very high bar). Other than this, the hate in on itself is baffling, the game is amazing, the whole losing your "safe space" (home) to horrifying hauntings was genius and the somber tone of everything was misconstrued as "bland" at the time. It's one of those things people look back on, and it seems like all gamers and magazines were kinda biased and forgot to see the game for what it was. This kinda reminds me of Street Fighter III. That game is still considered one of the best (if not prolly the best) game in the series, and it is the only one who spawned a dedicated book and even an event so significant tied to it (EVO Moment #37, a thing so special that no other SF game will ever get it again). Yet it was commercial a failure and people hated it. It was a new game, with new characters were kinda odd and we just came out of Alpha 3 (which we literally thought it perfected the Street Fighter formula). Look the conversation today, and it seems like people have been forever agreeing it was the best!

I agree with you but one legit criticism of Street Fighter 3 was how slow it was, compared to some other entries int he series it felt like you were moving in slow motion.
@hrvallejoMKT6 ай бұрын
@@nothingelse1520 Amusingly enough, SF3 never got the "Rainbow Edition" treatment that made developers re-think how slow SF2 was before the hack became popular! On the other hand, the game steers a bit more to the technical side of things with the parry, juggling, universal overheads and whatnot... you had a lot of hitting options that would have probably felt out of place if the game was a faster more button-mashing deal (like the early Capcom VS games).

I'll give Team Silent an A for effort in an attempt to try and do something different at the time for the Silent Hill series but in terms of replayability and what not it didn't quite work. Most likely because of the lack of the dark environments which is what the previous titles had. The part where you always come back to your apartment room and to a place of safety was a nice touch and then when halfway through the game the room gets possessed and the hauntings can hurt you if you didn't get rid of them via candles

SH4 was great; I loved every minute of it, and the music was gorgeous. Ugh, I played this game so much that I had to take a year break so I could forget details and play it again refreshed. By the way, Henry Townsend made the mistake of vacationing there while living in that cursed building. We were in Silent Hill a couple of times as players. The cylindrical orphanage and the house with the Nakoma stones are all Silent Hill especially with that beautiful lake next to the cemetery. I’m not sure what the complainers were speaking about, but I appreciate a new take on this city because we’ve already learned the map from Silent Hill two and three. If it was the same layout I would’ve been bored. Ooh, that Spanish guitar for the menu was so exquisite. ❤❤

I think the setting being in either a apartment complex or a hotel is a really great setting for horror 100% I used to feel that way about silent hill 4 before I truly saw the brilliance of silent hill 3 n it’s symbolism, the level design and break from going to the other world by having ur player chill n find out lil bits of the story through returning back to your room is really great! Although someone put silent hill 4 over Tommy wiseaus the room n u gotta admit the acting in these games is super on par with that, besides 3 the line in 4 about the guy keeping a umbilical chord under his bed is just really funny n I don’t think it was supposed to have that affect but no some of the level design is so rememberable those Giant buildings rising super high with the fog is great!

I'm definitely in the minority with this one, but SH4 has always been my favorite in the series. The ways it uses themes of isolation and anxiety, and the atmosphere that is developed by both, is done SO well and really resonates with me... I also really liked SH3, but felt like the formula of the first three games had run its course and was going a bit stale. So the changes and experimental nature of SH4 felt very refreshing, even if it was awkward getting used to it at first.

funny enough, you can open any video criticizing on SH4 and NO ONE says anything about the game not actually being in Silent Hill a problem. The problems of this game are really others, like in this hour and half long video by One Doomed Game Critic. Theres a LOT of problems before you even notice that the game has little with the actuall city of silent hill. Not to be offensive, but will never understand how ppl think this game is anything but REALLY bad
@aronimo580011 ай бұрын
to me personally, the game was fine, id say at SH3 level of quality, except with worse (way worse) characters. But the fact that you got to play mid level design (besides water prison, loved that level tho ppl who agree with SH4 being bad dont think that way) is just outreagous to me. Like, its the worst combat in the series, its not really scary besides the first twin encounter and everything seems made just to annoy the player, like the ghosts aoe attack, clunky inventory... EDIT: totally agree, SH1 to 3 are physchological horrors, not survival horrors, its somewhat trivial to survive in these games even for a first comer

I think people who hate on sh4 are actually the same people who say stuff like 'the conjuring is the best movie ever' and hate on slashers. I mean come on sh4 has real slasher motives here. Serial Killer (with tragic back story) check. One at most two survivors check. Not many jumpscares/ more emphasis on gore check. And there are many many more parallels. This game isn’t simply your average horror mystery it’s a graphic slasher novel tbh.
@johnathanross651910 ай бұрын
For me, it's a tale of two halves. The first half was good, and the changes didn't bother me as for the more traditional survival horror elements like the limited inventory and the use of an item box. Combat was decent, not the greatest, but an improvement over the melee combat of the previous games, though. The story was intriguing and kept me engaged for the most part. That's where the praise stops. It was good up until Eileen is now exploring with Henry. She is just a burden and makes the game unfun. Then the enemies become abundant, and it seems the ghosts are everywhere now. Speaking of ghosts, they were unnerving at first but quickly became a nuisance and annoying. Putting them down with a sword is a pain, and you're better off just running away. The victim ghosts from each stage are anticlimactic, and they are just another ghost to pest you instead of becoming unique sub bosses. Such a waste if you ask me. Then you are exploring the same stages again, which feels a bit lazy, and the exploration becomes stale. Walter is such a crap and cheap boss fight, and you could easily get the bad ending if you're not fast enough to defeat him. 6/10 overall imo. I see why SH fans are divided on this game. I enjoyed 1-3, much more. SH4 is a creepy game, but it's short comings keep it from being a worthy chapter to the original trilogy. Edit: The games that came after were much worse. Making this game age well. I never hated it, just really didn't like the bait and switch with the rest of the game being an escort mission through the same areas. It killed half of a good game for me. That said, I'll bump up my overall rating from 6/10 to 7/10. It's crazy how SH has fallen.

Walter is the best villain in the series, his story is more well developed and detailed than all the other characters in the franchise. The audio work of Akira Yamaoka was always very disturbing, but i truly take my hat off on what he did on SH4, whole another level, genius of a sound designer, his sound is disturbing enough without any image necessary. The people who died in the first half of the game, coming to haunt me as new enemies on the second half, that was neat as fvck, plus the feeling of me loosing my safe appartment room for the paranormal, made me scared to go save the game, also a neat idea. People say combat is clunky, this applies to all Silent Hill games up to that point, except enemies now dodge your blows, which to me makes the combat better and feel like an actual "combat" and not just beating on sponge constantly until it dies, the sponge tries to evade now. The truth is fans loved 1, 2, 3 and wanted more of the same, developers were audacious to bring new sauce to the recipe, and most people taste senses didn't accepted the changes.
