@Invictus maneo PaxAmericana I think I read that they use 40% of land for green space. And what do you mean with the lost of individuality? East - Southease Asian culture is revolved around family. Duty to the family before individuality as far as I know. I think asians already found a balance between individuality and everything else.

As a Singaporean, I would recommend Singapore as a great place to visit and if possible to stay for a few months, soak in the innovative vibe and take in as many ideas as you can. But like Japan, be forewarned the pace is intense. As days turn into months and months turn into years, it will wear you out. There is always someone better after your job, some other company trying to destroy yours. If you get a good business running, it is tempting to run it 7 days a week. The money can be good. Taxes are low. The time will come when you will yearn for less crowds and more wide open spaces and your own space, and this city living will become a pleasant curse. Pleasant because it is safe and clean and how long you want to tolerate it before it drives you crazy.

I am Brazilian and I had the pleasure of spending 3 months in this incredible country. I went on business and was impressed how the country works so well in so many ways. The combination of the collective disposition of its native people and those who choose Singapore to live in, together with the government tools that strive for the country's general modernity, is what makes Singapore such a wonderful gem. Besides being one of the most amazing places to go sightseeing, it's a magnificent place to think about living forever.

I'm sure there are some lazy individuals who wouldn't make it. (It's the same everywhere.) But it is also because most of them do not have to worry about food / shelters, and thus they can focus on doing what they love. That's why it's important for a country to help all their citizens get sufficient education and minimize the amount of poorer households so that everyone can focus on other things.

I love Singapore, being ex merchant navy I visited many times and spent days waiting for my ship so I could board. Even back then some 15 to 20 years ago when I was last there, it was a vibrant clean and exciting place to be. The culture of Singapore is vibrant and oh so friendly. One was always aware of the greenery wherever one went. It is no surprise to me that it continues to excel. A beautiful country and people for sure.

As an American, I am continuously shocked at what it actually look like when a country is governed in a way that is dedicated to improving and sustaining a good quality of life for its people. America is the richest country on the planet and it is a shame that we do not even attempt half of these policy’s and projects. Such a beautiful thing to see a country that strive for innovation first, and not profits above all else like the US has.

I'm watching this documentary because I just returned from visiting Singapore for the first time, and I was HIGHLY impressed by this city/state. It really shines in terms of cleanliness, organization, technology, and architecture. It is right up there with Tokyo as my favorite cities in the world. There's so much more I'd like to explore so I'm going back soon. And this documentary made me that much more excited, seeing how forward-thinking Singaporeans are. I can't wait to see what this city will be like in 50 years.

@@FeeDBacKMKII As a Singaporean, I'd say a week would suffice. It's very small here, so travelling around doesn't take up much time, hence you can actually do a lot in a day. But ultimately, it really depends on what you're planning to do. If your spending budget is quite high, I'd say 2 weeks would be great to experience a lot of things & you can really take your time to enjoy the moments. The number 1 thing to do here is to actually eat, eat & eat. I can confidently say that we have the best food anywhere, & there're PLENTY of varieties. Nobody believes us when we tell them it takes 20 years to pay off a $300,000 apartment, 10 years for a $15,000 loan to buy a Toyota Camry, etc. Mexico is not under developed. Your country is being sabotaged by your neighbor who supports guns & gangs violence, drug trafficking, corruption of your politicians, etc. Ask your relatives, ask your buddies, who is destroying Mexico and why. "They" want you to be poor and fighting or killing each other.

Singapore was essentially a benevolent dictatorship under Lee Kuan Yew for decades after independence. Whatever good things you have going for you right now would surely dissipate and as a resourceless island in Asia Im sure you’d starve to death as China hijacks all good shipments that come into Singapore to feed their dying empire. Thanks NatGeo for a brilliant documentary affording Singapore the well-deserved recognition and achievements that many in the world aren't aware. The details found in this documentary is highly educational and informational which perhaps many wouldn't have known even if they live in Singapore. Singapore is not perfect by any measure, and so is every other city out there. Nevertheless, Singapore's achievements are remarkable relative to many other cities. I am proud to be Singaporean (in a humble way) and the amazing feats we have achieved thus far while we continue to push the boundaries of possibilities to surpass previous milestones. Kudos and heartfelt appreciation to the SG government, all Singaporeans as well as all the talented and hardworking foreigners living and working in Singapore, who have contributed extensively to this amazing city. Also to note: Elon Musk tried to make a TESLA partnership with Singapore. However Singapore declined that partnership. Elon assumed that Singapore was "opposing alternative vehicles" as our income would rely on fossil fuels. However, we hit back hard with the data that individual electric vehicles is less of a movement to protect the environment and instead a way to capitalise on the fact that it is a "Lifestyle" and that it would be more effective to have a Mass-Public Transport system that could reduce the number of vehicles, and there could also eventually be alternatively powered public transport as well.

Jethro Chan are you sure? I mean during its growth days it was considered strict socialist city state. Rights to peacefully protest and other normal things were not allowed. Evidence of these strict laws still are still shown in their incredibly laws. (500$ fines for littering and etc.)

Just Facts Just Facts it’s also usually illegal to protest without government consent. Many of the laws from back then are still in place. I should have said it’s still focused on economic growth but have given a little more voice to the citizens. It’s a great place to visit, but to live is a different story. High land costs and troublesome laws. This is an excerpt from the constitution “parliament may restrict the right to freedom of speech, assembly or association if it’s necessary or expedient in the interest of the security of Singapore”. They’ve given so much power to the Prime minister so all these are very accessible to him even though it says parliament decides. I couldn’t care about lgbt but things like these are still illegal in Singapore, and companies who support these have been suppressed from holding events.

@@spigbungus I suppose, but Singapore is definitely an outlier from countries with those similar policies. It is doing well, just because a person is given power does not mean they will exploit it for wrongdoings. Also, it's still definitely a democracy, leaders are under pressure by the people's opinions.
@spigbungus

Marcus Len I wouldn’t say that it’s that different. If you noticed among the asian tigers all countries went through a similar phase. Korea with park Chung hee, Japan after world war 2, and China with deng xiao ping. I admire Singapore strength to follow this trend but people don’t realize what they had to sacrifice. A phase of strict government dedicated to economic development.

It's important to take notice that what underlies and supplies the funding for all this public and private research is capitalism. Singapore ranks consistently as the second most economically free nation in the world. The government does a superb job in protecting property rights, facilitating free trade, and keeping the overall regulatory burden low while still enforcing pollution control guidelines. It is so remarkable to see what can happen in a "start up culture" such as Singapore, where people have the freedom to innovate. If only more of the world's countries would follow Singapore's model. The world would be a richer, healthier, and cleaner place.

As a Singaporean I freely admit that Singapore is really no big deal in everything. We are not the best in manufacturing, not the best in higher education, not the best in human rights and many others. But I dare say we are one of the very few country that manage to score high in every key denominators that define one as successful. We do this often by pushing ahead unequally among the stakeholders leaving some behind. Cracks are already formed and one day we might turn insular like so many nations today have. But until them, I wish the party never stop in sunny Singapore.
