Tim Burton is a one of a kind person. Whimsical kind of movies.Batman and Edward scissorhands. To name a few. Sleepy Hollow is a good movie. Nice seeing Ichabod Crane get Katrina. Get out of the mass alive. Johnny Depp and Christopher Walken. A long with other good actors and actresses. Made a good story.

Good stuff except you keep saying Burton-this film, while wearing his trademark style all over, wasn’t written by him. All these themes are the work of the screenwriter, who also wrote Seven, which share common themes although they aren’t developed to the same conclusion

I did very much like the movie, and many of his films. However, I find Tim Burton's themes to be over-simplistic on certain matters. He sees magic and science as progressive and always portrays the "normals" as backwards and superstitious. In some sense, as an outsider himself he is making normal people the outcasts. The problem with that is it denies the fact that people are people. Scientists are often the bad guys, and religious people are often the heroes. And that brings up the pet peeve I have with him. He portrays religion as only superstition and backwards. That seems strange considering that witchcraft is based hugely on superstition. It also ignores the fact that there are reasons why witchcraft was ostracized in olden times. Witches were not just seen as outcasts because they didn't fit into the norm, but because they were seen as dangerous to society and individuals. They were often people who created poisons to sell to people to murder their spouses, or would take money to put spells on people (whether real or fake). Witchcraft in essence was considered a sort of supernatural manipulation and against order. And science is not neutral. It is only good if used by good people. Neutral is just a way of saying it has the potential to be used for evil. But that's the thing. Everything has the potential to be bad, which means that everything should be controlled by the good. And that is the point of civilization. Take that away and you have chaos, sort of where we seem to be heading now. That is why, although I appreciate the eccentricity and visuals of Tim Burton's work, I find his themes to be quite hypocritical and one sided.

Not everyone agrees on what progress is. Christendom was progress compared to the pagan world beforehand. And now society wishes to go back to pagan ideas and abandon the Christian social order. Is change always good or is it sometimes bad? If not everyone has the same goals of progress and what we are progressing towards or regressing towards, then it will not end well. It is not just people being stuck in their old ways. It is rather that those who wish to keep the old ways believe in the old ways. Yes, some only for selfish reasons want this. But those who say they want progress often have selfish reasons as well.

In a way it does ... because nothing will change this way,what needs to collapse is goverment as it is,it just doesn't work because same people win technically

I do like the film, but to say that the story is a metaphor for society to reject so-called old ideas/traditions and embrace science as a way of achieving enlightenment! Perhaps that was Tim Burton's intention when it came to making the film, but take a good look around, and you will see that Tim Burton's optimism for the future was sorely too optimistic. We are more divided as a society in 2022 than we were in 1999, and that is not the fault of what some would call antiquated ideas/traditions. I don't believe that being religious and having a scientific mind is a clash of ideas. As far as science goes? In this day and age, society would have us ignore basic scientific facts to suit its own narrative. I wouldn't call that an enlightened society, I would call that a society of degenerates.

That's the most scholarly review I've ever heard of "Sleepy Hollow." I'm just going to be shallow and say that Christina Richie seemed a little too young- and too washed with the blonde eyebrows- to play Katrina. Also, I am partial to Irving's original approach to the story in which the truth or falseness concerning the horseman's existence (not to mention the fate of Ichabod) is left open to speculation. Making the supernatural aspect of the story real just felt like a bit of a disservice to Irving's classic, but clearly that's just not what Burton was going for, and as director that was his right. Good movie with brilliant art direction, but I still prefer the animated Disney classic.

“Presentism”, to use present-day attitudes and values to condescend to views and people of past eras, is frankly arrogant and undermines your essay. Even worse to pretend like half the population today is of the same mindset as the wild superstition portrayed in the film. It’s disingenuous to the actual values of liberalism, which doesn’t fall into the trap of tribalism like you’re doing. It’s no mystery that Burton is a liberal with a chip on his shoulder about religion and conservative generations, but Burton is smart enough to give everyone their due and to frame complex characters across the political spectrum. The ultra liberal bias you’re pushing that heralds itself as the champion of progress and knows best for everyone is ironically… regressive. You offered nothing in your critique that wasn’t already obvious upon viewing the movie and you projected more of your own political hangups than analyzed the ones actually in the film. I’ll agree Sleepy Hollow is the PERFECT Halloween movie, but for reasons that have to do with fun and aesthetics. Why do film critics act like they’re all Arthur Miller?
@itskitty808 Жыл бұрын
Sleepy Hollow is the perfect Halloween film because its gothic aesthetic and feel perfectly captures the spirit of Halloween. I do agree that this video doesn't explain why this is a perfect Halloween movie. It seems like it was made to vent the creator's politics hangs ups.
@dennisduncan7561 Жыл бұрын
His critique was fine. I don't think it was overbearing and didn't find his analysis ultra liberal. Many of his points are quite valid. Demonstrating how Ichabod relies on science and reason is a part of being progressive. Should he have just ignored this element?

Sadly, this otherwise insightful video fell prey to its very criticism. Openly biased ideology against one politician and making the very common mistake of seeming to argue for a good cause (climate change concern, etc) while displaying zero probing understanding of the very manipulation by those in power when it comes to distorting through media the deeper causes and realities behind those concerns. "Keep opening your minds to new ideologies and science, but don't think for yourselves and point out flaws in BOTH parties or believe science that challenges the established narrative."

Had me until the ending...your liberalism clouds your judgement of current times.

@jonhinson5701 Жыл бұрын
One of the reasons I subscribed. Liberalism will save our democracy. How is defending science and criticizing ignorance and narrow mindedness liberal?
@themidnighttavern6784 Жыл бұрын
@@jonhinson5701It's because both sides think they're the enlightened ones. Liberals think they're right, conservatives think they're right, both of them are deluded in thinking the other side is the cause of all their problems. The reality is, both sides are made up of essentially the same people, who, lacking in any sort of self awareness, think they're the exact opposite of those they claim to hate. It is only by shaking off the shackles of both parties, that we'll be able to improve this county. Those who commit to one party or the other are destroying this country.
