I think there are many reason why. The new generation " kids" were not in the culture when it was huge for us. The "street wear" era paved way to a lot of nike's success and basket ball culture which only "people" from that era cares about most. We also have Nike suing all the diy / custom culture individuals and entities with CNDs who had supported Nike for so long as the brand. Nike's sneaker output isn't as good anymore i guess this depends on what shoe that may be and etc. Other than that the current resell market is running shoes and luxury brand culture " archival clothing" is the current wave. Overall, it's everything that is happen all at once that is causing this. At the end of the day what is dead is the Era of it's culture when sneaker collecting is prime and the death of what Nike used to represent as a brand / movement.

To me, what made collecting sneakers so special was playing the game. Joining raffles, running to store, waiting in lines, which most of the time resulted in defeat, is what made it such a great experience to actually get a pair. The reason a new shoe felt so good was because it had felt like I had won the game. I had put in the effort to get the shoe and it had paid off. It was extremely satisfying. Another aspect that made collecting so special was the hunt of finding a sneaker for a good price. I always felt like paying resale was like opting for a 'pay to win' feature in a video game. It's kind of like legal cheating. You don't get the same sense of gratification from paying $400 for a shoe that costs $160 retail. That's why finding a great deal on a pair of shoes was so rewarding. Either being first in line for a store and getting a pair retail, or searching the used/second hand market and paying under retail. It was awesome because you had a sense of pride in the fact that you had gotten a pair of sneaker, a pair which most people would end up paying some ridiculous resale price for, that was super cool and didn't cost your life savings. It was a sneaker that had value much higher then the amount you paid for. You could rock them and not feel like each step is depreciating the value. What has ruined sneaker for the moment, for me and for a lot of others, is that they just don't feel special anymore. Just like Qias said, there is something special when only one color way of a certain silhouette drops in a year. It gives the consumer time to enjoy the shoe instead of always buying the newest color way. Nowadays, Nike is just pushing out way to many designs and it is making it too easy to get them. There is no more hunt. They took away what was special to me. However, although the sneaker market is at a weird place right now, I predict that there will be a sneaker drought soon. Nike is pushing out a ton of stock, but will soon cut off the outflow. This will create scarcity in the market. Nevertheless, it will allow the market to balance itself out and in the end, when the dust settles, we will be left with a balanced market, where shoes are still obtainable, but there is still a game to be played.

I have been a sneakerhead for 25 years. I was also a reseller up till around 2021. I'm still a sneakerhead, but do not buy to resell. Reselling is dead, but the love for sneakers will never die. Honestly, now (at 43) and the fact I have to wear combat boots 40+ hours a week. I buy sneakers i love when they get discounted, or i have a code. There's no want for the freshest new release when I won't even get to wear them.

I am so happy to hear about Nike taking action against bots. The Jordan 6 Olympics that came out in August 2024 are still available to buy from many retail stores. That's a good thing.

Sneakers are dead because resellers and hype beatsts with no style ruined it.

I'm glad the market is down, and I think a lot of it has to do with people no longer wanting to spend a lotta money on clothes. These were kids asking mom and dad to get them Yeezys for Christmas, but those same kids are paying their own bills now, and they're not dropping $400 on a pair of sneakers. Same deal with Gucci, LV, etc ... 5 years ago you were the man if you pulled up with a Gucci belt, now you're getting roasted for spending half your paycheck on a belt.

The real reason is mostly everybody has a sneaker collection now. There are too many good options to choose from as well. Nike is starting to release more grails too. So until people start wearing out their collection we’ll be in this stage.

This is one of the few times where inflation is good lol, everybody got more important things to spend money on in this economy where groceries and other living essentials are insanely expensive, so who has $100s to $1000s to wastefully spend on some unnecessary overpriced cheaply made shoes other than rich people who don’t really care about most of this stuff? It’s great to see resell die and people buy whatever they like without having to deal with vultures feeding off of hype., this reminds me of the time when I first became a sneakerhead in the early 2000’s walking into any store and just buying whatever I wanted because every shoe was basically available

The resale market may be dead, but sneaker culture is thriving. In fact, there has never been a better time to get yourself in the sneaker community. We’re experiencing a return to the golden era, where enthusiasts can actually secure a pair at retail prices, just as it was always meant to be. This is the authentic sneaker culture-accessible and true to its roots. It was never about how expensive your pair of Jordans were. We wear them because they look nice and have heritage behind them.
@irahong5 ай бұрын
I cant agree with the argument that its a good time to be a sneakerhead because now the jordans and dunks are sitting on shelves for under retail. First, that just means that no one wants to rock them anymore. I am one of them, I was a huge sneakerhead and all about the culture- until I looked in the mirror one day in my mid 30s and realized, the silhouette no longer looks good anymore. All of the jordans feel cluncky and heavy and the nikes are just not comfortable and the quality on every pair is very underwhelming. I gotta say its almost embarrassing to be caught in a jordan at my age at this point. The other thing is- even the younger generation of kids dont wear them anymore like we used to! Its no longer about nikes and jordan only, I see the diversity in the kicks these days among the younger kids and I find that to be a positive thing. Nikes and Jordans were cool but it has finally fallen and I am actually glad.
@kidistight4 ай бұрын
I disagree with that, they are sitting because Nike is mass producing them and people don't want the colors being released. They flooded the market with less desirable shoes and resellers can't keep up with the supply and low demand. Sneaker age we are in currently is GLORIOUS. I don't even buy Jordan's anymore what for when I have a prior release of the same shoe in pristine condition, I buy other models and wear them.

Yup I actually ran into this same issue about my age. I honestly feel better wearing my snakeskin boots than I would wearing something that a 13 yr old should be wearing 😂

This is the comment I was looking for. U hit the nail on the head for me especially about the clunky bulky part. It’s Jordan’s now I thought the world of when I was 17 -18ish and now I look at them and I’m like wth. I’m now 35 and while I still like time js like the cement 3s it almost come off as immature and citi trending to be wearing modern jays.
@irahong2 ай бұрын
@@xavierwilliams2228weird how that changed. It was gradual, I was still rocking Jordan 3s and 4s up until around early 30s, then I was like, I can’t be caught being seen in these in public lol now my fav are ACTUAL comfortable shoes like ONs, Hokas, and Brooks. All of which if u gave me a pair 10+ years ago I would’ve said wack lol

As a sneakerhead since 2021, I found a love for the hobby and became an enthusiast quickly. The sneakers I liked, I wanted. But eventually, I quickly found out that even normal sneakers were hard to get and it became annoying. I still hit a lot, but it was stressful. But now, I’m just glad to have the ability to cop what I like.

I don't buy sneakers regularly anymore but I came out of retirement last weekend specifically to get my favorite sneaker of all time: the Jordan 3 black cement OG. I was easily able to cop two pairs just by hopping on a few sites at 10am. In 2018 I paid my plug $100 CAD extra to secure me a pair. Oh how times have changed!
@diarrheadiaries37082 ай бұрын
Nike doesn't care about the resale game, so retros for them make money! Yea the collectors hare it, because they lose money when virtually the same shoe is released. I'm loving it though! 4s are my favorite, and being able to get every 4 for retail or under is awesome!

I've been collecting for over 20 years. I recently just got rid of over 200 pairs, I only kept about 15 pairs of 1's and 3's and some 4's. You just get to a point in life where sneakers just don't mean anything. I feel more comfortable wearing a nice pair of boots now. Sometimes you just have to let your age catch up to you as you age.
@anikaskitchen9628Ай бұрын
After seeing the volume of sneakers in the closet collecting dust falling apart. People are now realizing they don't need to have a lot of sneakers. Shoes won't last forever. Just buy what you need, use the shoes if it's broken replace it. Also what is the point of buying expensive sneakers just to show off, You can wear an expensing sneaker or a regular Nike people will see it and they do not care at all.

It’s simple, the normal sneaker fans who have like a 4-6 shoe collection got tired of the market being inflated by resellers and crazy market price for a 180 shoe. I’m glad people are struggling they caused this

The market crash of sneakers is a big F-U to all those who buy and bought sneakers inorder to resell them for more and by doing that, take away from the people who want them. How many stores opend with the concept to double the retail price and sell the shoes, that were ment to be sold for much lower price. Go close your sores now and go back to the burger king counter.
