When I learned that the gap of run speed between #1 and 2 in terms of stat number was comparable to #2 and LAST PLACE it suddenly all made sense, imo Sonic can still be allowed fastest but it shouldn't be by as ridiculous a margin as it currently is

I think people blew that out of proportion. Yes, his max running speed is ungodly high, but his initial dash is actually only the fourth fastest. This means by the time he hits max speed, he's usually at the ledge of the stage already. the real problem is that his specials are also burst movement tools on top of his speed, which makes him nearly uncatchable.

Sonic's problem is just the ease of camping. You can absolutely make Sonic the absolute fastest and still make him a blast for both sides, look at Project Plus or M. He's one of if not the most aggressive character in those games, and it's great. He needs his side B to become what it is in those mods, lighten him up so he's a bit more fragile, while still keeping what works. And make his homing attack have a cooldown of some kind. His offstage and combo potential is what makes him such a blast to play, so *completely* reworking him runs the risk of removing that fun factor. What he desperately needs is to incentivize and force players to use him as a rushdown. Outside of that, his personality is also horribly shown in 4 and Ultimate. Brawl was him at his worst, but his personality oozed through every little thing he did.

The problem is that they cant reward him being aggressive because if they make his close combat good then he'd just run people down without anyone beinh able to keep him away, they'd need to rework him fully to make him a less polarizing character.

The real bad thing about Sonic's design is how hard they tried to balance his speed with a lot of situationally mediocre moves across the board. The has a weak approach and a weak combo game compared to a great majority of the cast to the point where if he tries to "make something happen" to much he can be very easily outpaced. Mithra, Fox, and Falcon can all love very comparably to Sonic simply because they can reach their top speeds quicker. This makes their grounded movement more similar than it might seem. Playing like a bitch is sadly optimal for a lot of characters across the board too, but for Sonic they were clearly afraid of him being too good and it backfired. As not only is this the only thing he can really do well, but he does it too well anyways because of how spindash is designed.

Punishes him for not interacting??? Oooh, I have an idea. If you stand around, Sonic taps his foot impatiently, and if you wait long enough, he says "I'm out of here!" And jumps off the stage, causing you to lose a stock. Unlike Sonic games, this animation/problem can only be interrupted/solved if you attack your opponent in a timely manner.

I feel like Sonic has to be played slower is because he sucks in scrambles so Sonic player try to avoid that. Most of our kill moves are too noticable for our opponents. F tilt is the only one that's somewhat reliable. Plus Sonic has damage, just not the knock back to kill reliably enough
