This movie seriously has some of the very best transitions I've ever seen in movies, and I'm considered a movie buff by most. They are clean and keeps your conscious in the scene, which is hard to do. The fight scene is incredible, it's has no cuts and like 20 transitions between each squabble going on. Cinematography is incredible. I don't understand why this movie is hated. Best anime adaption created.

One of my brother's friends had a chance to speak with one of the directors and they talked about Speed Racer a bit. They made a deliberate effort to avoid simple cuts and make transitions more creatively and dynamically. I think that adds a lot to the flavor of this movie.

@@DoctorCondensate I'd defer to someone who has more expertise in that area. The question would be if Warner would want to pay to put that work in for a movie that didn't do well. I would think it would be more likely they'd take that 2K master, upscale it, add the HDR, and put it out it as a "4K" release. But I'm just guessing. Maybe we will see something done when this new Matrix film comes out, as a way of taking advantage of the Wachowski name or maybe even as a favor to them, since it's all Warner. Although, Warner just got bought by AT&T, so who knows?

Flick Fanatics It most certainly is a spectacular standalone piece. Also, with all the years passed, it’d be impossible to make a sequel, the younger cast has grown up. If they were to do a ‘reboot,’ with the same style, color, music, feel, etc. and a different storyline, I’d love it. That’s the problem with reboots however, they do a different(ish) storyline, but also a different feel, which is why most reboots fall flat sadly :(

When I first saw the trailer, I was really put off by the art style, so I waited till it came out on DVD to watch it. BIG mistake; while it looked like it was going to be a silly racing movie, it's got a lot of heart, and you can tell just by the first sequence. By the end of those first 15-20 minutes, you're really invested in their story and perfectly understand what that race means to them. I absolutely LOVE that first sequence, it always gets me teary-eyed. It's honestly way better than it had any right to be, and it's up there among my Top 3 favorite movies of all time.

I absolutely agree with you. In my opinion, this movie is absolutely way ahead of it's time. In 2008, the word "Realism" was more important than what's make the movie fun and the cheesy, unrealistic and over-the-top movies (such as this Speed Racer movie) were mostly unfavorable among the audiences and critics at the time. (that's why The Dark Knight was able to make billion dollars but this Speed Racer movie was bombed at the box office) I watch this movie in theater back in 2008 when it came out and until this day it's still one of my all time favorite movies. (I can even say that this is my favorite movie of 2008) This movie is The Wachowskis most underrated work which has Michael Giacchino most underrated score. Also, the editing of this movie is fantastic and the fight scene in this movie (the ninja fight scene) is very well edited which opposite to the way that other action movies in 2008 were edited. (such as Quantum Of Solace and first Taken movie, both movies are infamously known for the use of shaky cam and quick cut)

Starting from the point when Racer-X says "Dont panic, just listen speed just listen to her" from then Speed's back in the race, followed by Spritles' "He's gonna do it!" and the back-logs of the core memories of Speed with Pops and his Mom, and even Racer-X, the whole sequence really immerses you in the moment. This is such an awesome video essay on Speed Racer 🏎💨🏁 and what makes it a true masterpiece! I could count on one hand 🖐, the number of things (music, movies, TV shows, visual phenomena, etc.) that's given me goosebumps and have MULTIPLE fingers left over and this film was one of them! Every single shot in that film perfectly captured the exhilaration of the TV 📺 show. The film's visuals delivered as much of story as the dialog. I was enamored by the original anime series when it aired in the early 1970s. There was no Speed Racer merchandise in stores back then so my dad bought me a white toy car and painted it to resemble the Mach 5! My childhood was full of wonder & amazement partially BECAUSE of shows like Speed Racer (and Star Blazers)! 😁♥️🌹

I love Speed Racer. It is a classic hero's journey tale, and we see Speed go from childhood dreamer to the tough choices of adulthood, and making the dream a reality. Sure it's a bit trippy and weird - but it is meant to essentially be a live action cartoon. Giacchino's score soars, particularly in the final race. I feel that what may have hurt the film a bit was the first big montage of Speed's first big race, juxtaposed with the tragedy of Rex Racer was a bit too much of an exposition dump and may have confused audiences. However, the film is also a parable about the nature of sport and the corrupting influence of money. - Roger Allam's "this is the true heart of racing" is simply brilliant. All in all a good fun movie - with some deeper themes.

Your video had me up out of my seats cheering and holding as much as that final race from the movie! Everything was so perfectly put. You summed up all the positives perfectly AND you just gained yourself a subscriber!

Those critics so say “It’s not realistic” My brother in christ, it’s based on an anime. It’s arguably the *best* live action anime adaption yet, imo.

There is nothing that this movie does that isn’t inspiring and jaw droppingly gorgeous, and especially as a lover and consumer of racing media or EVERY FORM this just fills me with so much hope

I didn't see this movie in theaters, I saw it at home because my parents rented the DVD. I had some yarn with me to do some finger knitting, since I often need something to keep my fingers occupied else I get distracted by how antsy I've become. And about a third of the way through the movie I had forgotten I was doing anything else. I was sitting at the edge of my seat, leaning forward, eyes wide and mouth slack. By the time the kiss at the end of the movie happened I looked down at my lap. My fingers had worked on autopilot, and by no means worked slowly. I now had a long, colorful yarn rope tangled around my general area. I think I was the only one in my family who actually enjoyed the movie. Pff, their loss. I wished I could've seen the movie in theaters, maybe even in IMAX or whatever, and that wish has not changed in over a decade.

This movie and raimi spiderman literally are the films that changed me as a kid to want to become better. To watch someone go through struggles and just not give up no matter what.

It's been years since I last watched this. It's weird how I still remember this thing's soundtrack and I was just a kid back then. I even remember the lighting ,the color, everything, I miss this movie.

I’ve never considered Speed Racer one of my “favorite” movies. And yet, its the only one I’ve gone back to so many times and watched all the way through. The only other one that’s kept me so enthralled for its whole runtime is Totoro from Ghibli, and if I’m thinking of a film on the same level as Ghibli… I suppose that has to mean something, eh? There is real heart in the storytelling of Speed Racer. And extreme skill that went into its construction. And where the two meet is where you find masterpieces that stick with you for decades.

It's great when people really see the true passion in the dialogue and the family dynamics and how they can apply it to their own lives. That's what truly makes this movie great and I will always love it. It's an over the top movie with a lot of heart~ Fantastic video~

There really is a whole lot of heart between Speed and his family. It's obvious that his mother loves Speed for everything that he is and she sees Speed's driving skills as works of art, and she just falls apart in joy whenever she sees Pops very happy and proud of their son. And I really love Pop's character growth throughout the whole movie. When Rex was leaving the house, Pops was mad at Rex for quitting Racer Motors and leaving the family, practically calling his own son a sellout, and telling him to never ever come back if he dared to walk out of that front door. 8 years later, we see how much Pops regrets the things he said to Rex when he refuses to let Speed race in Casa Cristo when he says to Inspector Detector "I'm sorry, Inspector, but I've already lost one son in that death trap. I will *not* lose another." And he's clearly furious and horrified with Speed's decision to actually go through with the race to the point where he shouts "God, you sound like Rex! You wanna die like him too?! Will that make you happy?!" And finally, just before Speed attempts to leave the family home himself, Pops sits down with Speed, apologizes for his assertive/aggressive behavior, and lays out all of his past regrets by saying "I let Rex think that a stupid motor company meant more to me than he did. He'll never know how much I regret that mistake... But it's enough I never make it again. Speed, I understand that every child has to leave home. But I want you to know that door is always open; you can always come back... because I love you." And then there is Trixie. Hoo Boy, Trixie really is the ideal partner for Speed. Strongly supportive of his dreams, was there to back him up by spotting from her helicopter at the Casa Cristo rally race, and even helped him make it through high school (since Speed said he never would have graduated without her help). And she will knock anybody's teeth in if they bad talk Speed (given that she punched a mean girl in the face for calling Speed a retard back when they were both 10 years old). I really do love the loving partnership between Speed and Trixie. While Speed really does love racing arguably above all else, his love for Trixie is right up there with his love for racing. You see him going through options with her about how he could prove to her exactly just how much he loves her just as much as he loves racing, and he even nearly killed Snake Oiler for almost sending Trixie off the rails to her doom while she was driving in Taejo Togokahn's place.

I love how they did the car sounds in this too. Every act sound matches the drivers perfectly. Speed Racer with his classic American style v8 (probably inspired by the GT40s of old Lemans) Snake Oiler and their Skyline/Supra turbocharged engines making the Blow-Off valve sound like a hissing snake about to strike Flying Foxes paired with modern Lotus engines (almost a 2 for one with their love of luxurious and expensive things and almost sounding like a giddy fox). All the car sounds just make sense.

My favorite movie from my childhood that I still watch whenever I get the chance, sad it’s not on Netflix, but my favorite parts are every race. Three main ones ( Fuji helxicon I consider a mini race since it’s about two minutes long) But the way the race is filmed and the way the drivers do tricks and flips and it’s just made to feel like a real race!!

Couldn't agree more about the ending. I can't watch the last 5 minutes [from the spear-hook reveal to the finish line] without crying, and I'm not even mad about it.

Great video man... not sure why this came up on my feed, but I'm glad it did. I watched this in the theater when it came out. Originally, we went to see it... not really as a joke, but let's just say our expectations were low. When we walked out... I immediately wanted to see it again. The movie is an undeniable good time with so much heart it hurts. We watch it as a family at least every year or so. And everytime we walk away thinking... how is this movie as good as it is.

I do really like this movie since I grew up with the anime...but when I saw Speed Racer at the theater, I had to leave for a couple minutes because I felt nauseous due to the cameras panning around and spinning so fast. The final race also had the same distinction causing dizziness. I did watch it many more times on DVD, and it's so much better on the eyes.

Core memory: once as a child, my family was camping in the woods for Independence day, and I sat in the back of the car watching this movie over and over on one of those battery powered movie players that hang on the back of a headrest. Favorite movie as a child
