I just love how this was shot like an anime. Sure it looks strange when you put real people to it, but that's because it hadn't been done before. The Wachowski's really took a risk here and in my opinion had amazing vision with this movie. It's a damn shame that it's not as appreciated by critics.

That was the problem though. You cant put an anime on the big screen. Or a comic book. You adapt it, ground it, then serve it. The Wachowski's brought it to as close to an anime as possible. Very faithful. Which is what made it so tacky, cheesy and alienating to audiences. It's a work of art. It's not a Mona Lisa, that everyone can appreciate. But a Guernica, that has most going "what the fuck am i looking at...?"
@Scoopscoopscoop4 жыл бұрын
The fact that the movie was shot in front of a green screen so they could superimpose the actors into these spectacular, super anime inspired backgrounds, really makes me think of cel animation. You would literally have a translucent sheet of celluloid with the characters painted on. I loved watching speed racer as a kid and I instantly fell in love with the movie.

I know exactly why, and it's the same reason I didn't want to see it as a kid. A lot of people were (and still are) stuck in the mindset that media has to be serious and mature in order to be considered "worthy". Cheesiness and exaggeration have no place in their mind, and as such things that have no qualms with reveling in campiness make them choke. Nowadays I absolutely love and embrace the cheese.
@TheSilentJorge3 жыл бұрын
@@FolstrimHori And is not only the cheese, that movie is 1:1 with the Anime. For me it is, as Jose puts it, the greatest anime to live action movie in history. It embraces everything from the anime and translates it beautifully to screen. You go to RT and see the reviews knocking on it and you will find yourself with a bunch of idiots who did not understand where this was coming from and reviewed it without any context. My GF is a huge fan of the anime and had never watched this movie before, we watched it last night and this grown-ass 26-year old turned into a little girl super impressed with what the movie has to offer. And that was before getting to the ending, she watched the first race and was immediately sold.

Well-put. This movie had ridiculous physics, excessive and massively over-saturated visuals, and a cheesy plot - which is exactly what it was _supposed_ to be like. @@Al.j.VasquezEditing it is actually relatively easy considering that pretty much the entire movie was shot on a green screen sphere. This was pretty much the only way they were able to get the film to look like it did, because everything was fake, meaning that they weren't constrained by what a camera could really film. It also made all those transitions a lot easier than if there had been anything real in the background.

@@MrGamelover23 I don't think you're taking in consideration the compositing between shots, the amount of cuts there are in this movie, and the large amount of work that needs to be put on every scene that has to look over the top. All the cutting between Speed and what it means to him, to his family, to his mom, to his dad, to his older brother, to racing. How in the zone he is, people yelling, overwhelmed, commentators losing it, the music swelling and exploding in a double burst of heavenly vindicating choruses and trumpets draping over that red checkered finish line. I argue that people are still not ready for Speed Racer in 2021. Many people are still high on realism and pushing graphical capabilities ignoring stylistic approaches. No amount of enhancements would make the movie any better if you ask me its perfect the way it is. There is hope for future movies to follow in it's footsteps taking a look at the video game market (I know different from movies but hear me out) games that take a more stylistic approach have been come popular in the last few years. Games such as Boarder Lands, Overwatch, Fortnite, Valorant, (Basically all big indie games).

The emotional moments of this movie are pure and treated with respect by everyone involved. The visuals both draw from the cartoon origin and iterate on it in a way that had never been done before. The color palette of this movie is gorgeous. It's creative, it's heartwarming, it's respectful to it's source material while making it work in a modern film, and above all it's unique. The final scene of this movie is one of the highest emotional highs I've ever gotten from any film, all because every single element of the movie builds to that payoff wonderfully. 5:09 - 5:23 Oh my god I've been saying this for the longest time. The first sequence is a perfect introduction to a this movie. It shows you right from the get-go that this movie's got HEART. You understand Speed's passion, his bond with his big brother, but you also understand his family's emotions as well, how tragedy affected everyone and, by the time the race is about to finish, you know it's not just a race; you understand exactly what it means to them because you know what they've been through. I've always been moved by that first sequence and of course I love the rest of the movie as well. I don't just like; I'm very fond of it, and it's one of my all-time three favorite movies.

I'll be 58 in a few months, and I used to watch TOS Speed Racer as first run when I was 5 or 6 in the sixties. In fact, my two favorite cartoons were Speed Racer and Jonny Quest. When this "live" action version came out, the only thing I knew that had to be in it for me to like it was Speed jumping out of the Mach 5 before it came to a complete stop and glamming in a pose in front of the camera. When that happened in the movie, I almost cried. Yeah, the visuals were colorful, but it is and was supposed to be based on the original anime. Brilliant. Of course, I own the Blu-ray and have seen it multiple times. Did anybody realize that the Speed Racer cartoon was the first time, to my knowledge anyway, that did "Bullet Time"? After Speed leaps out of the Mach 5 and poses, the camera travels around him in bullet time. Is it a coincident that the Wachofsky brothers made "bullet time" famous during the Matrix? I don't think that is a coincidence.

I feel like Speed Racer was a victim of it's time. As pointed out in this video, Dark Knight was a huge success while Speed Racer was a flop. Both came out in 2008. Audiences at that time wanted more realistic themed movies. They wanted an air of realism to what would normally be a fantastical concept. Dark Knight was a Batman movie with a realistic theme and audiences in 2008 ate that up. Speed Racer was hyper stylised and over the top in many ways, and that's just not what people wanted back then. People only took it at face value and dismissed it as "not realistic" and that was that back then. I feel like if Speed Racer were to come out more recently (obviously with up to date CGI) it would've been better received because we've had so many hyper realistic blockbuster movies to the point we're getting sick of them. People can now sense the corporate lack of soul in many modern movies, and Speed Racer challenges that. It's a genuine story and nowdays being genuine in media is hard to come by. Speed Racer is literally bursting with heart and genuinity and I think that's why so many people have come to retroactively love it

I was just seven years old when this came out. You're absolutely right about the world of Speed Racer being immersive: I walked in not knowing what to expect, and I walked out dizzy, awestruck and overjoyed. Add that to the fact that my family was feeling the effect of the year's recession very severely, and in general was in shambles, and the Speed Racer world became my sanctuary. I drew designs of new race tracks and cars compliant with the universe, played out detailed scenarios in my head... Good times. I actually recently re-watched the film and found that it's far less immersing when you're more aware of its shortcomings, it's still a thoroughly enjoyable flick.

I bought the WII game and the DS game and played them constantly until at some point I just went: Huh, I dont really want to watch this anymore. I lost the obsession but still found the movie pretty entertaining.

Amen! Amen! AMEN!!! I love Speed Racer! One of the most underrated, underappreciated films in recent years. I am especially tired of people complaining that it's nothing like the show when one of the best parts about it is that IT'S JUST LIKE THE SHOW. Sure, it's told a little out of order and adds a bit to the mythos, but it basically tells the story of the first season of the show and gets much of its aesthetic and tone straight from the original cartoon. One of my favorite films. When it was released on Bluray, I watched it at least every other week for about 6 months.

I agree with you completely that Speed Racer does not deserve all the hate lumped on it. Its a great enjoyable film. There are ALOT of movies released before and after it that are of much worse quality but have been rated more kindly. I think it was so different from the Matrix movies that people were not prepared for the massive change of pace by the The Wachowskis and had different expectations resulting in lower review scores.

Not even going to deny it, I tear up every (EVERY) time I watch the finale. The music, the visuals, everything just clicks perfectly!

I’m so happy I’m not the only one who still appreciates the wholesomeness of this movie, especially every scene with john Goodman in it. The soundtrack has all the heart the composer brought to his work on Lost as well

And he didn’t even need to touch on how great the score is, sounding like what you would imagine an evolution of the original shows music would be

Thank you for this review. I'm in a film club with about 8 people in it. Everyone rates each movie they watch, and the person with the highest score gets to pick a bonus movie at the end of the round. Although I thought it might be a risk to this scoring system, I chose Speed Racer. Getting towards the end of the round, and it's still winning. I was so glad to see it generally well received by people. It's absolutely a film I believed in from the first time I saw it.

It took me 10 years to finally decide to watch this movie. I never watched it bc the style of it looked cheesy. But iam so Glad i finally watched this movie. It is Fantastic!!! Yes some parts of the movie are a little cheesy but the rest of it is just so good. Its creative, beautifully written, and has so much heart. I LOVE this movie. What i think hurt this movie is the terrible timing of the release.

You can't have a fun movie without a little cheese. It is just how it goes, cause life is cheesy in the fun moments too.

I loved it from the jump. We rented it for two bucks, watched it, and then i watched it twice more in a row. One of my top favorites ever. And now its on Netflix!!! Never could understand why people don't like it?

@@convo8506 Not really because we can just watch cartoons as cartoons. Only stupid people need to be convinced that an animated movie is actually real when literally nothing about it isn't digitally created. That's why this movie failed--they spent real money on what's essentially a cartoon. And an awful one.

Holy cow, I beat that game, both the DS and Wii versions! It was as over the top, exciting, and amazing as the movie from my memories! I didn't get to see it in theaters but I saw it as soon as it came out on DVD when I was 8. I probably watched it 100 times, and I still think its great.
