what you say at the start is so true. we often have a 5 or 10 star rating system, but anything that isnt atleast a 4 or an 8 is considered horrible, which also reflects in how people choose to rate things. enjoyed something well enough? a whopping 9 stars. kind of becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

I know exactly why, and it's the same reason I didn't want to see it as a kid. A lot of people were (and still are) stuck in the mindset that media has to be serious and mature in order to be considered "worthy". Cheesiness and exaggeration have no place in their mind, and as such things that have no qualms with reveling in campiness make them choke. Nowadays I absolutely love and embrace the cheese.
@TheSilentJorge
@TheSilentJorge 3 жыл бұрын
@@FolstrimHori And is not only the cheese, that movie is 1:1 with the Anime. For me it is, as Jose puts it, the greatest anime to live action movie in history. It embraces everything from the anime and translates it beautifully to screen. You go to RT and see the reviews knocking on it and you will find yourself with a bunch of idiots who did not understand where this was coming from and reviewed it without any context. My GF is a huge fan of the anime and had never watched this movie before, we watched it last night and this grown-ass 26-year old turned into a little girl super impressed with what the movie has to offer. And that was before getting to the ending, she watched the first race and was immediately sold.

Well-put. This movie had ridiculous physics, excessive and massively over-saturated visuals, and a cheesy plot - which is exactly what it was _supposed_ to be like. This movie was pretty much perfect in portraying what it was trying to portray. And as you point out, the transitions in particular were absolutely masterful. It's a criminally underrated movie and deserved much more appreciation than it got.

@@Al.j.VasquezEditing it is actually relatively easy considering that pretty much the entire movie was shot on a green screen sphere. This was pretty much the only way they were able to get the film to look like it did, because everything was fake, meaning that they weren't constrained by what a camera could really film. It also made all those transitions a lot easier than if there had been anything real in the background.
@Al.j.Vasquez

@@MrGamelover23 I don't think you're taking in consideration the compositing between shots, the amount of cuts there are in this movie, and the large amount of work that needs to be put on every scene that has to look over the top. I am talking of course about the guy that had to stitch the scenes in his computer, that timeline had to look quite busy.

I just love how this was shot like an anime. Sure it looks strange when you put real people to it, but that's because it hadn't been done before. The Wachowski's really took a risk here and in my opinion had amazing vision with this movie. It's a damn shame that it's not as appreciated by critics.

That was the problem though. You cant put an anime on the big screen. Or a comic book. You adapt it, ground it, then serve it. The Wachowski's brought it to as close to an anime as possible. Very faithful. Which is what made it so tacky, cheesy and alienating to audiences. It's a work of art. It's not a Mona Lisa, that everyone can appreciate. But a Guernica, that has most going "what the fuck am i looking at...?"

The fact that the movie was shot in front of a green screen so they could superimpose the actors into these spectacular, super anime inspired backgrounds, really makes me think of cel animation. I argue that people are still not ready for Speed Racer in 2021. Many people are still high on realism and pushing graphical capabilities ignoring stylistic approaches. No amount of enhancements would make the movie any better if you ask me its perfect the way it is. There is hope for future movies to follow in it's footsteps taking a look at the video game market (I know different from movies but hear me out) games that take a more stylistic approach have been come popular in the last few years. Games such as Boarder Lands, Overwatch, Fortnite, Valorant, (Basically all big indie games).

The choice in aesthetic visuals is a stylistic choice. It's the reason the CGI has aged well. Trying to make things look photo-realistic just points out the flaws in our technology but when you choose to present a fantastical art style it steps outside of time as it's unique only to that world. I prefer to see more stylistic choices like these in films.

Watching Speed Racer and Cars got me hooked into motorsports ten years after watching them. The passion and how fun the movies were cemented the thrill of speed and how deep racing is as a livelihood and as a business. The biggest fail in my eyes for Speed Racer was that when the movie was advertised in NASCAR, they chose the #43 of Bobby Labonte instead of the #5 of Casey Mears or the #6 of Mark Martin.

All the cutting between Speed and what it means to him, to his family, to his mom, to his dad, to his older brother, to racing. How in the zone he is, people yelling, overwhelmed, commentators losing it, the music swelling and exploding in a double burst of heavenly vindicating choruses and trumpets draping over that red checkered finish line. It’s glorious." And that is true for me as well. That final race was jaw-dropping and ethereal in its own right.

For me there is too much suspension of disbelief; the cars are moving too much in unnatural ways. Plus there is a huge disconnect between what the actors are doing/behaving/driving and what's going on in the same action sequence.

I feel like Speed Racer was a victim of it's time. As pointed out in this video, Dark Knight was a huge success while Speed Racer was a flop. Both came out in 2008. Audiences at that time wanted more realistic themed movies. They wanted an air of realism to what would normally be a fantastical concept. Dark Knight was a Batman movie with a realistic theme and audiences in 2008 ate that up. Speed Racer was hyper stylised and over the top in many ways, and that's just not what people wanted back then. People only took it at face value and dismissed it as "not realistic" and that was that back then. I feel like if Speed Racer were to come out more recently (obviously with up to date CGI) it would've been better received because we've had so many hyper realistic blockbuster movies to the point we're getting sick of them. People can now sense the corporate lack of soul in many modern movies, and Speed Racer challenges that. It's a genuine story and nowdays being genuine in media is hard to come by. Speed Racer is literally bursting with heart and genuinity and I think that's why so many people have come to retroactively love it

5:09 - 5:23 Oh my god I've been saying this for the longest time. The first sequence is a perfect introduction to a this movie. It shows you right from the get-go that this movie's got HEART. You understand Speed's passion, his bond with his big brother, but you also understand his family's emotions as well, how tragedy affected everyone and, by the time the race is about to finish, you know it's not just a race; you understand exactly what it means to them because you know what they've been through. I've always been moved by that first sequence and of course I love the rest of the movie as well. I don't just like; I'm very fond of it, and it's one of my all-time three favorite movies.

Are we saying it's a manga adaptation because of the way the transitions reflected the panels in a Manga? 'Cause I 100% knew about the Speed Racer cartoon, but had no idea it was a Manga as well, lol.

I watched this movie so many times as a kid. My dad hated it when I watched it because he always got confused. My child brain could comprehend what was going on and absolutely loved the visuals and the super cool race scene, but the style was too jarring to what my dad was used to. He got lost in the flashbacks during the races and had a hard time piecing the timeline together.

I'll be 58 in a few months, and I used to watch TOS Speed Racer as first run when I was 5 or 6 in the sixties. In fact, my two favorite cartoons were Speed Racer and Jonny Quest. When this "live" action version came out, the only thing I knew that had to be in it for me to like it was Speed jumping out of the Mach 5 before it came to a complete stop and glamming in a pose in front of the camera. When that happened in the movie, I almost cried. Yeah, the visuals were colorful, but it is and was supposed to be based on the original anime. Brilliant. Of course, I own the Blu-ray and have seen it multiple times. Did anybody realize that the Speed Racer cartoon was the first time, to my knowledge anyway, that did "Bullet Time"? After Speed leaps out of the Mach 5 and poses, the camera travels around him in bullet time. Is it a coincident that the Wachofsky brothers made "bullet time" famous during the Matrix? I don't think that is a coincidence.

I have always believed that this film is the best american adaptation of a japanese manga, that ending where the race is combined with emotional dialogues through memories with good transitions and that soundtrack that gives you a certain nostalgia and little by little it becomes an emotion of joy with the final scene of the two cars crashing is memorable, insurmountable despite the CGI, because you do not go with the expectation of seeing the film for something complex or dense like other films but for that something that seeks to ignite a spark of joy and childhood and you end up with a tragic, charming, memorable and wonderful story where the gestures of the entire Racer family make it look authentic, they are those little details that make this film at a cult level but that not many appreciated in its premiere but with time we see it with another look that ends up falling in love with a movie that is a love letter to the original work

I saw this literally 5 times in the movie theater. I went by myself. The goosebumps that others describe here I felt those 5 times and still do. Just rewatched it today, and it's still so damn good, especially the beginning and the end. My only complaint is that it was a little too long, especially since the death race ended up being mostly useless.

Dude you took the words right out of my mouth. Speed Racer is such an underrated film and deserves much more credit than the critics give it. It captures that wacky, campy tone of the manga while adding a new mature tone between all the great characters, and the actors all nail the emotion and heart in the movie. The visuals certainly are no slouch at all, and they drive the plot along. I have great memories watching this with "Iron Man" back in 2008. Great review man 👍

This movie is so great because of it message and character undertones. A man who wouldn't give in to the greed and money that big sports corporations care about. All the pro racers in the film raced for money but speed racer raced for the love of driving. The biggest message: never let greed and money corrupt you. Against all odds, the "little man" speed racer beat the odds and prevailed. It's a great underdog movie. People need to rewatch it

This movie is so special to me. My family and I view music as the Racer family views racing. So everything hits a nerve in this movie. One of my favorite moments is the final race (of course) when he goes up against Cannonball Taylor, who has been built up as this untouchable force... and just completely WIPES the track with him. "GET THAT WEAK SHIT OFF MY TRACK!".... gives me the chills EVERYTIME. Great video!!!
