Well said and you are 100% correct. I cringe so hard when people bring people down like Sports Card Investor while these people do the exact same thing. There should be NO shame in this hobby when it comes to money and collecting because we wouldn't have a hobby without the money side and there's nothing wrong with that. Those people are pathetic who bring others down and do the same thing as them but feel they're doing it 0.01% different. The whole "you're just in it for the money" talk is just senseless hating. These are the people who collect worthless cards and then get upset when other people collect stuff that go up and gain massive value while their crappy collection stays a crappy collection. No offense, but that's what the hate looks like to me. Get over yourself. Also, enough with the "what about the kids" argument. Look. I was into cards since I first saw Marvel cards of Spiderman and X-Men in the early 90s. They were cool, but what really whet my appetite was seeing these magazines that put value on the cards, such as $5 for a Spiderman "rookie" card. If they had no value, I probably would have been a lot less interested, and I was only 11 at the time and knew nothing about money or any of the sort. Don't insult the intelligence of kids, especially the ones growing up in these times. You may not know much at that age, but it doesn't take long for anyone including kids to realize that money is good. If the cards are more expensive these days, they will find a way to save up and start a collection one way or another instead of buying video games and other stuff other kids may want.

Geoff, I don't agree with the insults of you that I repeatedly see on these videos. I think some people will just insult anybody they can online. However, I do think there are some people that might mistake your enthusiasm for something else. I'm pleased that my card collection values have gone up, but I also have a number of concerns about today's card market. I think it would be a good idea to make a video about what might concern you about the current card market. As you likely know, short sellers in the stock market often do point out things that investors overlook. I can immediately think of a variety of things that concern me about today's card market and the future of the card market. For example, the originality of today's cards (Especially Panini) is really concerning. The cards in the 90s and early 2000's had quite a lot of originality. You saw different photos on the fronts and backs. Today, same photo on front and either the same photo on the back or the player's name in extra large font with no other stats or info. For over a decade panini hasn't even bothered to vary the way they write the card numbers. National Treasures and other products are being produced in low quality. NT boxes are literally made of cheap paper now. Packs in 2020 are still easily resealable. The Upper Deck cards in the 90s are more secure and tamper resistant that today's packs. It used to be cool when you pulled an Auto. You used to be able to read an Auto. Now over 90% of the autos are sloppy scribble or just one or two initials, not to mention the amount of sticker autos, even on high end products. There is literally almost nothing to keep kids engaged in this sports hobby. You go to the stores and it's almost always guys in their 30s and 40s looking for sports cards. Kids are buying Magic the Gathering and Pokemon. Sure, the market is fine now because guys in their 30s and 40s have expendable income, but what about 20 or 30 years from now? No average kid when they grow up is going to relate to a Luka Doncic card that they can't even dream or affording right now. They are going to relate to Pokemon, Magic, and other items...not sports cards. We have to think about the future and I don't see a serious effort on this account. Adults are literally even buying lower end cards and hoarding them, grading them to flip, etc etc. An average kid can't afford these cards, much less send a bulk order into PSA for grading. The current weak attempts at keeping kids engaged is not well thought out. The sticker card stuff is even being grabbed by adults. Buying cards has always been a bit of a gamble. However, when people are now addicted to breaking which is basically playing a high priced slot machine...we now have people that are addicted to the win, not the cards themselves. Gambling addiction is not going to help card collecting and investing. One could argue, you could make a channel called Sports Card Gambler for some people. Even the online breakers sound extremely enthusiastic while breaking no matter what, even when they literally open a pile of nearly worthless cards. I'm not trying to rain on the parade, but we seriously have to look into these issues and other issues. I just say these things, not as insults, but as a critical thinker about this situation.

You make a lot of good points in your videos and I have a similar outlook. I think that the sports card hobby is becoming a nice alternative to the stock market but the thing you worry about is oversaturation and for the sports card market to crash. It's tough to say whether you should cash out now on cards, especially graded cards, that have appreciated a lot in value or how much longer to hold for. Obviously injuries to players can decrease the value of sports cards and there are other factors as well.

This is awesome. I'm in the same boat. As a successful entrepreneur and investor in ecommerce companies, investing in sports cards has been a way of reconnecting with my childhood while investing with positive returns. Keep doing your thing.

Great video Geoff! I’ll tell you why there won’t be another junk wax era, because back in the 90’s was there parallels and short prints and autographs even if they overprint base cards there will still be the golds, reds, silvers, numbered cards etc. keep up the great content! Love the videos Geoff they’re really helpful!

Hell of a video man. Let the haters motivate you. Can’t wait to watch you hit 100k and most importantly I can’t wait to make some MONEY through the hobby we love.

I believe technology will keep the hobby going. When I collected in the 80s & 90s the only places to sell your cards were to friends, dealers (good luck getting anywhere near a cards true value, a card show or flea market (tough to recoup your money paid for a table). Now I can sell any card in in instant, recoup my money and invest it else. This is the key to growth & longevity for the hobby.

Lmao you don't have to prove anything to anyone. The haters are just envious of the success you have built from the ground up. I remember watching your undervalued basketball card list back in July/August from 2019; you've provided a ton of value to everyone here, the hobby wouldn't be as big without you. Also i'm with you on Lonzo Ball I bought a bunch of him prior to sports cards exploding, but he's not looking so hot right now lol. He's been improving, but has a bit inconsistent impact, hopefully he can pick things together. Keep up the good work! Edit: I also think a good reason why sports cards will go up is simply because cards can be a hedge against the US dollar like bitcoin has been as long as the scarcity and the demand for cards remain they will see great ROI's in the long term. Obviously if there's a recession and we experience deflation that's a different story, but as long as they keep on printing money the value of cards will likely go up.

Great video and great insight. I have come back into the hobby probably for the 3rd or 4th time. I started in the 1970s and still have my PC and I came back a few times since. I really came back again in 2020 and I like trying to predict the next stars. I am likely retiring in the next few years so I treat the sports cards as my next mini career that as noted in the video is an enjoyable business.

Curious if you have any opinion on this. I have a juan soto update xfractor /99 as a bgs 9.5. Could probably sell now for 4k. How long would you hold this card?

We know you're a collector, Geoff, we see how giddy you get when you open product! Obviously you're in it for the money as well, your intro says "my journey to PROFIT from the hobby we all love" not "my journey to lose money". I think you make great content and in some ways set the standard for the rest of KZbin sports card channels. You do a lot of great things for the hobby and straight haters have to acknowledge that. I think Market Movers is slightly expensive but that's just my opinion (as a former and sometimes Market Movers member). Keep up the good work, because even though I don't watch your videos every day, I feel that people would miss them if they weren't there. Never take anything for granted, folks!

Excellent video. I agree that there are a lot of reasons to be excited about the future of the hobby. Geoff, I shared a concern I had with regard to the video on Select, but I don't think you have to address those who criticize you for "being into it for the money". Nobody in the hobby is against profiting from their collection. In addition without profit, few people would stay in the hobby very long.
