We waited in line for a long time but we got in. We were close up on the screen but everything was big at my age. This movie blew my mind. I was a creative kid. I got the toys and got the playsets recreated from what I remembered from the movie. I also built my own toys with race track car engines providing the sound and power. To make a long story short, seeing STAR WARS now hurts me to the core. I have seen every movie in the 1st week. And to not support something I love, that changed my mind in 77 is crazy. Im far more cynical than most modern anti-Disney fans. SW started circling the toilet bowl for me when Lucas decided back in 97 that his altered SE versions of the originals were now going to be the ONLY versions of those films going forward. It was an awful, unpragmatic decision back then...and it has only reverberated louder as the years have passed on. Then he followed up that wopper by inflicting the awful prequels upon us...which not only failed to match up to the originals in tone, but in continuity as well. After seeing Anakins "fall" to the dark side in RotS amount to little more than him being blackmailed by Palpatine into switching teams at the 11th hour in the final film of the trilogy...my disconnect with SW going forward was complete. The sequels being awful didnt even phase me by that point. SW had been diluted and sullied long before Ep 7 dropped...so my investment in it as a franchise just wasnt strong enough anymore for me to even be upset. Ppl can hate everything SW that Disney has ever produced, but the rot that led to Lucas selling it to them in the first place had set in years before they took the helm. Whatever joy CAN now be salvaged from future SW media projects going forward will suffer a fanbase that is ready to ruin it out of spite regardless of its quality. Just look at the hate Andor received...despite displaying the best writing the franchise has seen since the OT, if ever. At this point, im not sure theres any salvaging it. Even something as drastic as Disney handing 100% control of SW back to Lucas would likely continue to yield divisive content that would struggle to find acceptance by a chunk of the fandom. The only viable solution at this point would be a competent, forward thinking third party taking over...and thats almost certainly never going to happen

The Star Wars trilogy is a major cultural touchstone of my generation and the first two movies are among the most important in film history. That said, even Return of the Jedi was of uneven quality and repeated plot elements of the first two movies (though parts of it were among the highlights of the trilogy) and everything released since then has depended on the first two movies to make it compelling. None of it really seems to stand on its own. If, in 1977, George Lucas had made The Phantom Menace or The Force Awakens or any other instalment instead of Star Wars, I think it would have gone down as a forgettable sci movie that only film nerds would even remember today, and there would have been no sequels, no toys, and no fandom.

Star Wars was so powerful of a story to me. I was 4 years old when it was released. My parents had seen it on a date. They came home, showed me pictures from a magazine and took me the next day. Even though I fell asleep before the Death Star blew up. I was 4. The entire time, I was overawed. I didn't stop bothering my parents about Star Wars for years. Once, I bothered my father the entire day about Star Wars. He was a good man. He didn't lose his patience until evening. Star Wars characters are EXTREMELY powerful characters. Examine Luke Skywalker. Young. Idealistic. Talented. Very protective of his family. Sense of duty. Morality in the conflict between stay or go. The Skywalker family is a dysfunctional family. Fallible. They are real people despite being space wizards. Disney destroyed that. Disney destroys culture now. You must understand that it is their mission. To destroy the Skywalker family. To destroy the values of the Skywalker family. Ultimately, the love of your children will redeem you. No matter how bad you are. Kathleen was chosen and retained her position specifically because she is an incompetent wokester who would do a great job destroying the franchise. The people in charge of Disney are destroyers. They want to build a New America that has none of its old flavor. They print all the money in the world. So destroying an edifice like Disney is no problem. Destroying Star Wars, a pillar of modern American culture, is no problem. Not content to just destroy it. They want to taint the waters first. So no one remembers it favorably. Despite earlier bodies of work. Honestly, though, the prequels were terrible, too. I could have turned in a better acting performance than Hayden and Natalie. The story was clumsy. I still have all my vintage Star Wars toys. I am only missing 11 of the original figures. Out of 92. Those are hundreds of dollars apiece. So they will stay missing. 😂😂 Rabbit hole for you - look at the paralells between Henry Ford, Detroit, Walt Disney, and what is happening to Disney now.

I'd seen the previous two movies by then, so I was well familiar with Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker and everyone one else. The lightsaber battle at the end between Luke and Vader was a culmination of the first trilogy. The temptation of Luke by the Emperor to join the dark side, then Vader saving his son from Palatine's wrath. It wrapped up everything in a nice way. There didn't need to be anything else. Evil had been defeated. The prequels had their moments, but were ultimately disappointing.

Andor is a masterpiece. Of all of it, I think I'm bothered most by the Sequel trilogy because how hard is it to get the writers into a room, PLAN a three-movie arc, and make sure the directors follow it? If you read the High Republic books and comics, there are several writers and they are very good at keeping the characters consistent and sticking to the plot. The Sequel trilogy had great characters, great potential, and excellent cinematography, but no plan, so the characters and potential were wasted. There is much that I like about the movies, but why couldn't they start with a good plan?

Star Wars fans are mad because people who don't actually care about movies are making movies. Besides, anyone who 'gets it' knows the The Last Starfighter did what Star Wars was supposed to do, only better - except for the vis f/x, but at least Nick Castle dared to push different boundaries, and without BOTH movies, the state of vix f/x wouldn't be what it is today. Yeah. The Last Starfighter is more engaging with less hackneyed characters and is more emotionally engaging. Bite me. The only thing to take away from what Lucas did is how he blind-sided Fox into signing the marketing rights to him. Even Lucas would say he isn't the most emotional of movie makers... what made the Indiana Jones Original Trilogy so entertaining? Spielberg. Now THAT would've been something to see: a Lucas derived and produced Star Wars movie directed by Spielberg...

I have only seen the original movies. I have no interest in the original movies that have been messed with (more advanced whatever it’s called changes). Nope. Only the original as they were. I refuse to call the original 3 the new names. I don’t even know them to be able to use them. 🤷🏻♀️🤣 I remember hearing about the fact that there were 3 more movies when I was a kid (elementary age in the 80s). My brother and I couldn’t wait. I haven’t seen the new 3. No interest. 🤷🏻♀️ My brother has seen all of them (more than the 6) and believes Disney has ruined Star Wars. 😢

Star Wars has gone downhill ever since Greedo shot first in 1997. The only truly interesting forces in Star Wars are Harmy and Adywan. Only their efforts are that of true fans and not cynical cash grabbers.

There are plenty of good female writers she could have poached from video game writing. I know that VG is a different medium vs film, but that's what edits are for. Rhianna Pratchett wrote for video games in the UK and US for years. Mercedes Lackey is a fantasy writer, albeit regular books. Just two bloody examples. Ugh.

The indisputable fact is that Disney and Kathleen Kennedy have made more good High Quality Star Wars than George Lucas ever did.

Look, us real fans, the nine year olds in 77. Everything after Jedi was a nostalgic money grab…. Grow up. It ended in the 80’s everything after is rich kids fan fiction.

I agree! He was very hard on it. That’s my favorite prequel movie. But he is right about the lack of the dark turn. It could have been done way better.

@@mysocalledgenxlife oh sure the prequels struggle with execution but the story is so good. I'll never understand why people think the prequels are the worst thing ever. Very dramatic.

@@AnakinTheBetrayer that particular review was at Cannes, and I think he was a snotty film guy that was mad a Star Wars movie was at that film festival. But he certainly wasn’t the only one to be hard on it. I wanted to include clips that showed the mixed reaction to the prequels.

@@AnakinTheBetrayer For me what ruins it is Christen and Portman. Wooden with no chemistry is an understatement. They are abysmal performances. If they had cast two competent actors, and tightened the script a bit. And it was a cop out. For me Anakin should have had the Vader suit at the end of the second film. Then have the third one where he is doing what Kenobi tells Luke in the original. Hunting down Jedi who escaped. We were short changed on Vader. And Haden was so damn bad it spoiled it.

Star Wars is doing just fine. The only people that are upset are fanboys who didn’t get the movies that they wanted. Star Wars is becoming more diverse, which is not surprising considering it takes place in a galaxy with trillions upon trillions of different aliens. Star Wars has been adding some of the most fantastic content to date. If you don’t like it, however you’re free to stop watching it. Your life will be better and Star Wars fans will be better because we won’t have to listen to you complain endlessly unnecessarily.

and what is your favorite story of all time? or do you have one? and when was the last time a multi-billion-dollar corporate structure set about intentionally destroying that story, and calling *you* all manner of unkind, untrue horrible labels when you called that company on their BS? it isn't "just a movie", and that's true both in terms of economic footprint *and* cultural impact. granted, some people simply don't care about it, which is totally fine, and in that sense i'm sure that it *is* "just a movie". very well then -- move along. for some of us, though, the hundreds of novels, scores of comics, dozens of video games, and tons of toys that all made it to the market before the Disney acquisition can only serve as a snapshot of how important the mythos is. i will be a diehard fan of the SWEU (Expanded Universe) until the day i die -- *that* is the true canon; not this trash that Disney is selling. before Disney, it was art, and art that enabled people to engage with challenging ideas from multiple perspectives -- until agenda and message became more important than narrative and characterization, that is. tl;dr -- your admonition to "get over yourself" is wholly unwarranted and completely unappreciated. the admonition to "move on with your life" is certainly more fair, but is certainly less than mollifying considering its inevitability.
