They should teach these avenues in high school art class like they would in auto body class. People need to know that these skills can be used to support yourself, not just a hobby.

In some ways we live in a golden age for creatives. There are so many really good software packages that are free or really low cost. Plus, there are so many courses to teach you what you need to know for free or at a low cost. Also, you are now not stuck in any one thing. Pivoting a career is in may ways much easies now, if you take advantage of the opportunities.

Very true Thomas, when I stated off as an artist I had know idea that most of my time would be spent doing the busness side, but its almost a neccessity and I have grown to like it.

yeah i agree. i think the future of creative work might be leaning more towards smaller fandoms where the creatives take a bigger cut of the revenue, and most middlemen in terms of distributions, marketing and fan community management are cut out

I’ve done some personal coaching but it’s more efficient and I reached more people by putting advice out here on KZbin.

Latest in AI, Chat GPT.4 has hit. And our jobs as comic artists are safe for now. OpenAI out of fear that GPT might turn into the Terminator have made the AI ultra family friendly. GPT.4 can come up with stories but those stories cannot have any element of adult content, violence, suspense or horror. So, everything from Devilman to Disney/toon splat into wall is safe. Now that said, the family friendly market is going to get gutted, (Strawberry Shortcake relaunch looking at you). However, anyone working in niche markets have a chance.

Sounds like we have a bit of a reprive but as long as the technology exests someone will find a way to use it for unscrupulous means I'm sure. All things considered I am gearing up for a major pivot to focus on the process and niching down to somthing that AI can't easly replicate.

I use casting, both metal & resin. Even creative naysayers, tell me 3D printing is taking over & casting wil become obsolete. Hmmmm let's see, the cost of 3D printing set-up is not cheap, it is a mechanical device which means cost of maintenance & repair, not cheap, especially for repair. Requires electricity which means you are dependent on an outside source. Mass production has a cost of huge time & time is money. Oh if the printer goes down.....time/money lost especially if you have deadline. my costs for casting 1/10 of a 3D printer & I get more volume & the biggest reward for me is casting is fun. The bigggest expense I had for set-up the time it took to teach myself casting. My point is even new technology for set up can be daunting & discouraging, so don't be discouraged by it, your hands & imagination are the best tools you have for creative business

Great points! I'm leaning more into making things using traditional materials. I think with what's happening with AI. People are going to be more interested in how to make things by hand and although I would like to get into 3-D printing it's less interesting to watch a 3-D printer print somthing than it is to see how someone makes a resin cast.
