@@bignugget6982 I get being a bit disappointed, although I personally think all things considered this a great signing. What is downright shocking and unacceptable is the abuse everyone involved in the deal has received and this wave of negativity that’s circling around the fanbase that I haven’t felt in a few years now. The downfall of this club is to a large part correlated to those negative fans that allow that negativity to become infectious.

I read an interesting article a few months ago that Arsenal would be very careful with money because they are expecting to have to give the likes of Saka, Odegaard Saliba etc massive pay bumps soon. They showed the Liverpool wage bill and over a ten year period it was 1 billion pounds higher than arsenal's wage bill at current trends. Arsenal are expecting to have that size wage bill soon and that transfers will suffer like they did at Liverpool. Thought that was an interesting point of view. never knew it adds up that much over the corse of having a world class team for a decade.

May be some truth. However, they've done a good job in clearing players from the wage bill and in this window they are now down to their core squad to build on going forward. Also, their signings have tended to be younger without the immediate high wage demands, bar Declan Rice' and even Merino doesn't break the bank. Sterling is the perfect relatively low cost, quality and experienced player to fill a gap for now.I think there is sufficient bandwidth to absorb higher wages and an unspent kitty that will grow with this season's CL to allow Arsenal to pursue their higher quality targets in coming windows.

It’s all checks and balances, really. AFC makes roughly half a billion per season with a net estimate of 300 million euros. How much do you reckon the club will make in profits for the next 10 years given the profit margins have been on the up and up in the last 3 years? That said do you really think player wages to the likes of Saka would be a problem?
@jefffalloon

Decision making is linked to the system and the next action, which I think Mikel is almost psychotically controlling about. I think Sterling will do well, it’s why he credits Mikel so much before too. The clarity our system will provide to Sterling, it will be interesting to see how he responds to it.

I think that the Sterling loan is fine. It makes us better this season and doesn't lock us out of making a good buy in Jan or next year. I know you guys hate the "there was nobody available" argument, but to me, if the right player wasn't available on the right terms I would rather that the club did something to elevate the squad temporarily than get the right player on the wrong terms or the wrong player at all. To steal George's bandaid metaphor, I'd rather use a bandaid than go to the dodgy surgeon operating out of the basement next door and get tetanus.

Exactly that. Makes the most sense. Apparently Nico Williams was the main target but didn’t want to leave his club. If he continues strong it makes sense to bot buy anyone now, save the money and maybe go big on Nico Williams next year. Maybe even with a title in our bags which makes him mote likely to want to join us.

as much as i want osimhen if havertz gets 20 league goals this season it isn’t really important. Nico williams didn’t want to leave and there wasn’t really any other winger. We need to start behaving like real madrid in the next window

I think what people have to consider is he's a big moment player, exactly what Arsenal said we missed against Bayern. Also those talking about strikers, we only wanted Sesko because he was a generational striker with a 45 mill release clause, someone to compete with Havertz or start alongside him. After Sesko signed a new contract we never went looking for a striker again in the window. Osimhen was on the market for 60 mill, we clearly don't want a 9. I think we did in previous years but since signing Jesus we haven't really been in the market. It was only really at the end of 2023 we were looking for a 9. I think Sterling's perfect, one season loan, he's either an upgrade on Reiss to backup Saka or a world class attacker who wins Arsenal the league/champions league. I've always highly rated Sterling and always wanted him at Arsenal

Great pod guys as always. One thing I'll push back on though. I do genuinely think that the right option for the "marquee" forward signings hasn't come yet. Let's go through every major option and see why it didn't work. Vlahovic - Didn't want to come, I think. Don't remember why it didn't work, but something about him wanting to join Juventus and stay in Italy. Isak - I don't know why we didn't get him from Real Sociedad (not proven enough?), but he's never been available for a transfer once he joined Newcastle. Šeško - He simply decided to stay at RB Leipzig. If a player decides to stay, then they can't transfer to us, simple. I remember reading somewhere during this time that if Šeško decided to leave RB Leipzig, he would've wanted to go to Arsenal, but he decided to stay to continue his development. More than fair enough. Mudryk - we know why. Nico Williams? - He wants to stay at Athletic Club. Again, fair enough. Leao - I don't want Leao at Arsenal. He doesn't have the committment to the team (?) or the defensive side of the game (definetely) that is a bare minimum for any Arsenal player, regardless of stature. Rashford - Same as Leao. Osimhen - Arsenal have reservations on his character, especially when he went online to relatiate to his Nigeria coach for criticising him. (teamnewsandtix was quoted on this somewhere; I'm not 100% sure) Also, this is a hunch, if we were to somehow convince Osimhen to join us, if he gets offered double the wages from Chelsea, he's going to Chelsea. He's already spoken to John Obi Mikel and everything, apparently. The committment to play for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal that we've seen from all our previous signings (e.g. Calafiori) maybe isn't there as much; there's no "only Arsenal" mentality there. Personally, I think we're waiting for Šeško. One more year and he will be ready for us in my opinion. As a result, the Stering deal is perfect. A temporary stop gap, without much financial burden or any long-term burden. Low risk because it's a straight loan and the wages are relatively low. Sterling's best years have arguably been when Arteta was in his corner, and we know how much Arteta was part of Sterling's success at Man City. As soon as Arteta left, Sterling started to decline (?). Arteta knows Sterling very well, and knows how to maximize him. If we can maximize Sterling, we can win the league, because a maximized Sterling is an elite winger.

I agree with George - not the signing we all wanted, but if we couldn't get hold of our chief targets (for whatever reasons, this is real life and not Fifa so I'm not angry with the board, who are clearly trying and have done great work over the past few years), I couldn't be happier with the temporary solution we've found. No excuses next summer though - it's time to do what we did with Jesus (make a firm decision on who we want and then spend the next year negotiating so it's a done deal by next June).

City's whole system had to change when they brought in Haaland. I personally have faith in Kai and Gabi J. It would have the be the perfect false 9 at the perfect age and the perfect wage to disrupt that. The gaffer is clearly trying to develop the combinations within such a young team. I'm hope sterling has an incredible season and we sign him on a permanent to become Arsenals answer to Salah and we can rub another one into Chelsea's smug faces

I'm sure arsenal have had and continue to hold a hit list of forward players they want e.g. Sesko, Williams etc... but things have not fallen into place in capturing them while the squad have managed to deliver sufficient firepower. Top forwards are highly sought after and limited in number meaning that when the very best are unavailable, the prices of next level down suddenly inflate. Arsenal are no longer in the business buying who they don't necessarily want for inflated prices just because that was all that was available on the market. I think Sterling's situation was on their radar throughout the window and they knew it would be a good 'stop-gap' solution for both parties if they failed to achieve there priority transfer targets.

I don't know what team that Arsenal will be facing for you both to give that anaysis, as the variety of teams that Arsenal will be facing determines the starting 11, the tactics, as from our first game back after the international break is versus spuds, so Georgino is the Rice replacement, and Martinelli gets back in. Your assessment seems to be that Sterling starts every game not as support. After spuds we have man city, and i do not think that Sterling can be a starter in that game as tactics over the last season has shown that we have the better of them, he will be on bench impact sub and that is his role for Arsenal until December in the league.

I still think there’s reason there to be excited - I just think it’s in the post for a year. We know the club were prepared to put the money up for Sesko at the start of the summer, so there’s genuine intent there to do something, and reliable sources like Ornstein have suggested that we would have taken Nico Williams in a cold minute if we the move was on. I think we can also assume that Chelsea would have been very interested in doing a permanent deal for Sterling if we’d proposed it, so the fact that we’ve only taken him on a year’s loan tells me that we probably have other (hopefully bigger) plans for next summer.

Edu Couldn't sign any other better option. He didn't have a clue. So he accepted other club's leftover at the last minute to avoid an even bigger embarassment. And the fans immediately come on to try to defend him because for them that's kinda defending the club itself - it isn't. All in all, it's just Arsenal yet again behaving as a small club receiving the crumbles bigger clubs perhaps drop under the table. They wouldn't sign Halland when he was netting in the Bundesliga - you know, it's a "farmer's league", as now they didn't sign Gyökeres. But if Halland would fell from grace after being signed by City and pretty much rejected, THEN, Arsenal would take him in and the fans would say that was a PERFECT SIGNING! 😂😂😂 As Turkish perfectly say: we shouldn't accept leftovers and try ro "recover" them. We need to find the NEXT Sterling, the NEXT Sane, rhe NEXT Coman.
