Thanks for sharing your experience. It's easy to get caught up in "catching" cheating and "punishing" cheating, but understanding it and using it as a teachable moment is probably more useful in the long run, I agree. I'm interested in what your students will think about changing the weekly cycle to begin with a weekend. I start mine with the weekend, and some students seem to enjoy having a weekend to get a bunch of stuff done without a deadline at the end of it. Some seem to take that weekend as a freebie!

I open every assignment and spend one minute looking for plagiarism. In word docs I use FILE, INFO to verify the author and I google sentences. After the first 4 or 5 weeks, I know who the cheaters are and who I can trust. Last term I had one student reprimanded out of 44. This term I have over 100 students. There are some good points in your video but after graduation, if a student copied and pasted content from a competitor it could lead to a lawsuit and a dismissal. As we are preparing students for this world we must teach and judge accordingly.

Good thoughts about the problem of the Sunday night due date. Students really do want to be able to ask last-minute questions; while it's not reasonable for them to expect us to be awake at 11pm for last-minute emails, it is important to be available the day something is due. I have some of my classes set up to have assignments due Monday nights, so the new week of content starts on Tuesdays. When I do Fridays as the due date, though, it doesn't work as well; I have more students who miss assignments saying they thought things would be due Sundays like every other class.
