That's good you found what inspires you. I have to disagree with a lot you said at least from the creative perspective. The last thing I'm doing and other people can chime in, is buying new gear during a creative slump, or switching brands ... that sounds so unreasonable. Not to mention very expensive. You are a working professional/content creator, 99% of the people watching this video are not. Modern cameras today from the big 3 are so close in specs and capabilities, I would be hard pressed to find more than a handful of people that can exceed those capabilities. I'm not saying you can't or that you're wrong in any aspect of your video. I'm just pointing out that this isn't normal behavior for amateur or even a majority of working photographers. Content creators on the other hand...well it's the nature of the business. You gotta make fresh content. With respect to that - Whenever you ever find yourself on your next creative slump you should take a break. Draw some inspiration from your peers and reset. Maybe it's just not challenging enough for you. Maybe go back to your roots for some inspiration. That D4 you use to own pairs very well with all those wonderful AI-S manual focus lenses. Perhaps you should even go further, a roll of 24 film and no autofocus can get your creative juices flowing real fast. It's a very humbling experience getting one or 2 keepers out of a roll 😬 - A vast majority of the time it's not the gear, it's you.

Absolutely agree with all of this and thanks much for your thoughtful response! Definitely wasn’t trying to argue that, in seasons of creative plateau, the only thing you need is to buy new equipment - that’s absolutely way too expensive 😅 I would absolutely advocate, as you have, in taking a step back personally, shooting some film, shooting some different subject matter than you typically do, etc - all things that can help spark the creative process anew and that’s been the case so many times for me over the past 10-15 years. However, there have been a few seasons throughout those years where the gear I’ve been using wasn’t able to perform how I needed, forcing a systems change, and in those moments the gear itself has been the catalyst for renewed inspiration. Really appreciate your thoughtful comment and thanks for watching!

More power to ya! I don't think I'll ever be able to fully part with my R3 and that 28-70...and my old 1DXII has a forever home on my shelf too.

Over the past 3 yrs I've been using canon and nilon, and I've been shooting sony since it purchased minolta and have been more inspired by just switching out my kits every few months. Right now I'm on a nikon kick

I just recently switched from an EOS 5D Mark IV to an R5 as it became affordable for me as an amateur. Shooting EF lenses. So in a way I‘m a couple of years behind you. 😂 I enjoy your videos, keep them coming! ❤

Ha love it!! The R5 is such a solid camera and EF glass still holds its own 🤙🏼 thanks for watching!

Ten minutes without a legit reason why you couldn't create the same content on your prior system. Yeah, buying something new can inspire anyone. How about some real, well explained issues that your prior systems had?

The primary catalyst for both brand changes was video capability but the purpose of this video wasn’t so much the why of the change but how that change impacted how I approached the creative process. Sorry if that wasn’t as clear as it should have been, thanks for watching!

@joshrexford2 ай бұрын
In 2017 the shift to Canon was primarily autofocus - the Nikons I was using had horrible autofocus in video and Canon’s Dual Pixel AF was fantastic. Stayed on canon till last year when I needed some of the built-in video features Sony had but canon didn’t (outside the R5c and C70 but I made a whole video on why I went FX3 vs those cameras) and so that prompted the shift to Sony (even though I stayed with canon for photo for about a year).

I've been shooting Canon for my all career, and not gonna lie, I haven't had any issues. BUT! I really feel like im missing out by not switching to Sony. There are pros and cons, but my main thing is the image quality, specially with clog 2 and 3. Which one do you prefer? the image from the canon system or the Sony? 😅😅😅
@joshrexford2 ай бұрын
So I’ve only been able to use clog3 and I MUCH prefer slog3 to clog3. However, I know clog2 is really beautiful and canon FINALLY adding that to the R52 and R1 is really encouraging. But yeah overall, much happier with the Sony video image and that + some of the native in-camera video features are what helped tip me over the edge. That said, canon is starting to push more video-centric features and options (R62 and R52 are great examples) and canon definitely is still a viable and very capable option!

Switched from Canon to Sony. Love the systems they’ve developed. Canon has been making some interesting improvements/changes in their cameras as of late though.

Absolutely agree - if Canon would've started adding some of those changes about a year or so ago, I might still be with them honestly. But very happy with where I'm at now!

I've been on Sony since 2020 and it's they're the first pro cameras I got. Managed through point and shoot Panasonic Lumix FZ35 since 2009 because I haven't been forced to be the cameraman nor the producer. Have the A7SIII and A7Rv and planning to add more. Other brands aren't as good with all due respect and gear does matter a lot if you're a wildlife filmmaker.
