I grew up with Allen Iverson. The apartments we lived in had about a 2 mile stretch of road named Garden Dr. running right through the middle of it. I lived on one end, Bubbachuck, as he was known then, lived on the other. Chuck would start at one end of Garden Dr. and practice dribbling the ball between his legs. With each step he took, he bounced the ball through, and if he messed up once, he started over from the beginning of Garden Dr. until he could go up and down the roughly 2 miles perfectly. He would do that for hours. Every day. From around about 9 years old until he moved away when he was around 12. Most days it would just be him out there and me watching from my usual spot sitting on the sidewalk in awe. I was about 4 years younger than him and he was very territorial, so we didn't have many meaningful interactions other than him sneering at me to get out of the way or to stop sitting on his porch staring at him and not talking, but I didn't care. I had no idea that I was watching a future global superstar (this was '86 - '90 ish), but I instinctively knew that I was gaining valuable insight on just how much hard work it takes to be great at something, so I'd better pay attention. He knew that he had to do something to change his families circumstances and figured out early on that sports was going to be it. He wanted it to be football, but he put just as much work in at basketball just in case and it definitely paid off. Peace.

A.I. more than lived up to expectations but he wasn't always on a title contender (especially in Philly). So I guess that his rationale was that win or lose, as long as he played well, he could live the results. Also A.I. was on the floor A LOT, he's 4th All-Time in MPG and played over 40 Minutes a night for most of his career. I don't think that anyone can blame him for wanting or even needing to decompress.

A.I maxed out his career. Dude was an undersized guard who led the league in scoring multiple times and gave 100%, 100% of the time. He exceeded expectations and his physical limits. Working hard won't have changed much else besides maybe add a few years to his career. Now if A.I. was a few inches taller with that speed...........phew. Dude was stressing teams out at 5'11". I Loved AI when I was a young naive kid but as a wiser adult, he was unprofessional in the way he conducted himself. He could've accomplish alot more if he was more mature.

From what he said AI asked him what time he'll be in the gym, he told him 11. AI most likely went to the gym at different hours, but even if he didn't. I can assure you he worked on his game way more productively throughout his career than the bums complaining about him off the court and in non-game situations. You don't get better by being jealous, of someone else's success. You only get jealous after you've hit your ceiling and becoming as good as someone like AI is no longer in reach. I've never heard of a player being jealous of someone they thought they were better than. It's only when they know they're not better than them.

I love AI's heart on the court, but it's a shame that people knock guys like Shaq and Vince Carter for not working as hard as Kobe (and could've been greater in the process) but not Iverson. One thing I've learned from watching Bball and following careers is that taking care of your body (working out, getting rest etc) helps you in the LONG RUN. Plenty of players had injuries and it damaged their abilities and forced them out of the league. Shaq used to claim he didn't need to lose weight to get 27-10 every night, but he battled injuries and overweight late in his career, same thing Zion is doing now. Iverson probably didn't have to weight train, or do cardio since he was so fast, but he could have used yoga, stretching etc. that would have helped in his Denver and Piston days
