Everything’s bigger in Texas - like the Stoicism. And I have a theory… #Texas #Texans #Country #CountryLiving #ThatEnglishmanInTexas #OliPettigrew

I’m a native Texan. Generally-We like to think and observe before we speak. Others may think the slow talk is irritating. I like to watch critics chatter and tell it all before I say a word. It’s a good strategy for me.

In Texas, really the South in general, fishing has nothing to do with catching fish. It's all about the ability to spend quality quiet time for reflection on life and just enjoy the moment.

I grew up just northwest of Houston, and my older sister loved fishing. After she got her license and a car, she would drive us about ten miles to a local lake to go night fishing during the summer and on weekends. We would get there just after sunset, and sit on the dock with our poles, a Coleman lantern, a six pack of Dr. Pepper on ice, and a little transistor radio. We could sit there for hours just listening to the radio, talking occasionally, sipping our Dr. Peppers, but mostly watching the bobbers float on the water. We didn't always catch anything, but we always had a great time.

I'm a Texan. That's a pretty good hypothesis you've got going there. I'm introverted so I'm always in my head; even talking to myself out loud. There is something about having the space and time to reflect. I think my mindset changed a lot when we bought our current house that has two acres of land. I didn't feel like I lived "in" Texas anymore. I felt like I owned a piece of Texas. For clarity, my neighbors behind me own even more acreage so I get to enjoy that space as well; along with the horses, cattle, chickens, goats, etc. It allows one to downshift and think more long term.

So glad I found you. LOVE the Brits, and spent 3 decades in Texas. Yes, Texans are stoic, but it's more than mere stoicism. It's pride in being a Texan, because Texas is pretty much a "nation" - and a world - unto itself. That, and you have to be pretty stoic to do all that traveling in and around the state. Sheesh, takes about as long to get from one end to the other as it does from Texas to the Midwest! 🤠

👍💪👏👏👏 Thank you for sharing 🙏 Native Texan here Grew up in rural Texas where you had to drive an hour to get to the grocery store or barber for a haircut, etc. Maybe all those long drives affected my personal penchant for going for a drive to think & to see what's going on around me. As a result, I have been blessed to catch double rainbows across a field of sunflowers, the interactions between 5 horses in a field near the road, adorable baby longhorns scampering around the herd, & more.

🤔Interesting thought😆 I thought it had to do with growing up in a big family😂 I do, however, people watch and observe😊 Definitely have always thought fast, but I respond slowly. Think outside the box. Listen to music to calm the beast inside me 😂enjoy what's in front of you and have deep conversation with about 10 words. Got to love Texas🇨🇱🇺🇸Thank you, sir, for your sweet interpretation 😊

There's an amount of surrender that makes you accept life, bc it's not like worrying fixes anything or gets you there sooner. You just have to keep going.

I think it’s a good observation. For example, my daily commute from Midlothian to Northwest Fort Worth is 1.5 hours each way. That’s 3 hours to talk with God, listen to a podcast, or music or simply to be quiet. It’s my meditation time.

Native Texan here. I am quiet by nature, but I do agree with you. The older generations of my family were all stoic. I am the same way. When others are freaking out about something, I am the calm one. When you spend hours having to drive somewhere to visit family, or friends, you have a lot of time to yourself. Lots of time to think. I love observing people. I can spend hours doing that.

Very good observation!..A TON of truth there, my friend, from a relative newcomer (10 years, but Texan at heart , always!)...It's just one of MANY reasons I moved here...Yes, some things are a lot slower and more relaxed here, but then, we have Houston, Dallas, Austin and some other cities for those that want a faster pace, but the majority of Texas towns are a lot more laid back and for lack of my own inventiveness, Stoic!....Either way, you nailed it!...Come to Bandera sometime, if you really want a "Texas" experience!...We'd be happy to have you!...Just sayin'!

Supposedly, the reason Texas has 254 counties, is the county seat is the distance you could ride a horse in one day. So we have been measuring time by distance for quite a while.

You're absolutely right and it's also why they became so friendly, because much of the old west was isolated and often anyone new who came into your area, would be a source of new information. So, it became culturally acceptable to greet strangers, ask where they're out of, what's the latest news? Plus, the vast majority of people were extremely devout Christians, who many relied on Circuit Preachers to bring them a monthly service. So, it was rare that the minister left right after the service, because people would get together, have eat'n meet'ns and hear the latest news from the preacher. A circuit preacher would be armed with at least a pistol and a shotgun and probably had a bottle of whiskey in his coat pocket. It would be the only medicine to fight against the flu and a few silver coins in his canteens to kill parasites. This is why they would shake their canteens before drinking from them, to agitate the coins.

Funny, I started learning about Stoicism after moving to Texas. What you’re saying is true about native Texans, outsiders not so much, unless they are applying the Texan ways.

The stoicism comes from several things. Texans, many, especially more rural natives, like to be sure of themselves. Going off half cooked? NOT a good idea. Get the thoughts together, a plan, then execute. Texans work hard. Quiet, a cold drink, staying inside one's head, helps decompress at the end of the day. Lastly, most do not really need to prove a darn thing to anyone. Most have an inner self-assurance, so talking needlessly is not needed.

We are a State who loves GOD AND HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON JESUS EMMANUEL CHRIST. We love to be silent so that we may KNOW GOD, HEAR GOD, FOLLOW HIS TEN COMMANDMENTS. When you see the AWE OF HIS BEAUTY IN CREATION IN EVERY CORNER OF HIS STATE TEXAS, YOU ARE STRUCK SILENT. Be quiet, silent, stoic. Know GOD AND HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON. In Texas, IN GOD WE TRUST FIERCELY. We will die for GOD, FAMILY, AND TEXAS. We are friendly unless you go after GOD, FAMILY, AND TEXAS. Our laws are about GOD, FAMILY, AND PROTECTING TEXAS. Got it? Some people don't and leave. That is ok. GOD CHOOSES WHOM HE WANTS TO LIVE HERE. Those trying to tear Texas down, look up. You might find AN ANGEL OF GOD INFRONT OF YOU SAYING "DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS. IT BELONGS TO GOD AND HIS PEOPLE IN TEXAS ARE CHOSEN AND READY TO DO GOD'S WILL.
