To me, it is clear, Disney went full Planned Obsolescence on Star Wars. Industry, even cultural, make everything with an expire date. Actor grow old, institutions decay, sets change. My biggest issue with the show is that the Plagueis novel exists. If/when Disney takes from legends content and disregards other parts, it should take care to make sure what it’s replacing it with is as good or better. The Plagueis novel is from the perspective of the Sith, it makes the Jedi look foolish, and it’s well written. It plays with some grey morality, but in the end the Sith are still evil.

I feel Sol, Quimir and Yoda's back-head are the best things in this show, in that order, and what sucks is how the best elements of this show that aren't lightsaber fights are saddled with awful writing and editing. Like, Sol's willing to let Quimir go free, after Sol and the Jedi discover Quimir was "selling" poison to kill people. One of which victims was a Jedi Master. Like, the whole show kicked off from a single Jedi Master being killed, and its just ignoring this guy whose an accessory to murder of another Jedi-Master. But... if they (or attempt to) arrest Quimir the plot gets harder to write, so instead the Jedi are going to let a guy who helps murders people / a Jedi go. Arresting Mae is just that important... ah sand in my eyes, I can't see her... And it all culminates with the parent trap of Jedi and Sith proportions, as Osha falls to the Darkside because Quimir, I shit you not, is too hot. Like, the guy who just murdered her long time friend, and new friend / padawan sister, showed her his "darkside" and boof, she's onboard with listening to his Palpatine sale's pitch. But that's like the whole show: Characters are written to be insanely dumb and aren't allowed at any point to have proper communication with one another (otherwise there isn't a plot, because Sol sure as hell wasn't a monster for lightsabering a evil force smoke cloud witch to save a little girl). And I could easily complain about Mae and Osha bland as !@#$ characters, but even then, the writing that goes into their arcs revolves around them shifting their beliefs scene to scene, quite dramatically, without any real work put into it. Its next to impossible to understand who they are because they're the human equivalent of sand in your hands narratively.

The “make Jedi the bad guys” could have been done way better. When there is a comic series about a Jedi padawan who is accused of killing his fellow padawans and is forced to live on the run, when in reality his Jedi masters all killed their apprentices because they saw a force vision that their padawans would all become dark-siders and kill them. And the only reason that he survived is because he was late helping a person in need, that makes for a good storytelling experience. I never finished that comic, it’s been a while since I read it, but I’d rather read or watch that story go down than to watch the acolyte again. There are way better ways to make a good story than plot convenience.
@mrreyes50042 ай бұрын
That's the most insulting part, for me: the fact that we ALREADY have good Star Wars stories that show the Jedi being shady in some way in the form of old comics and games. It _should_ be super easy to just decently adapt them into live-action or even animated form, and efficiently cut out the pains of coming up with an entirely new thing. But nope, not only do we not get modernized adaptations of those stories, but the "original" media we do get is absolute trash that doesn't actually bring anything new, let alone explore the topic at all.
@Lobsterwithinternet2 ай бұрын
Not even that. Star Wars The Old Republic MMO already did this much better with the story of Nomen Karr during the Sith Warrior’s story. To sum it up, Master Nomen Karr became so obsessed with hunting down corruption within the Republic and the Jedi Order that he ended up being corrupted by his own ego and self-righteousness which you can reveal to his apprentice to turn her to either the Dark Side, or towards joining you as a light side apprentice if you're a light-sided Sith.

For all people asking why Osha chose to train with Qimir, while rightfully calling out the nature of the ship due to Qimir killing many of the Jedi who accompanied her (while Jecki seemed to like Osha and Yord was already someone familiar to her), aside from Sol and Yord, the rest are complete strangers. Not to mention the circumstances surrounding her situation really lead to a lot complications that started with a massive misunderstanding with Osha and Mae’s Mom and the Coven of Witches in Brendock. If anything Koril was the one at fault for escalating the situation, leading to Mother Aniseya’s death as well as the death of the whole Coven. Even if Sol told the truth and Osha everything, while it was the right thing to, it’s not the most easiest thing to say. And when it happened, Osha didn’t know wheather to believe him or not. At this point, Osha couldn’t go back, considering she killed her Master (R.I.P. Sol) and so turned to Qimir cause there was no other choice, with Mae having her memory wiped. People maybe shitting on that, but in the Ahsoka series they are willing to give Shin pass for some strange reason, even though I’d argue she is much more ruthless and bloodthirsty than Qimir (a Sith of all people), expressing no remorse for her actions and clearly dosen’t seem to be very empathetic with other people. In fact, they her and Sabine (someone she gleefully wanted to kill) to be a couple instead of Ezra (who was really the nicest person to her and clearly had a strong crush on the girl and understandably so) being with Sabine. Honestly I think Wolfwren is more toxic and illogical than Oshimir, which rightfully earned its criticism. But I’m Qimir’s defense, he did seem to care about Osha, whereas Shin could care less about Sabine. If the creators need to get some flak, then so do the fans.

The pacing is off. The order of the episodes are off. There is no murder mystery. We know who is killing them, we dont know why and when they reveal the why, its very lackluster. Osha only has one characterization scene. When she tries to save the life of the prisoner on the crashing ship. Then it ends. No more character work for her. Its wooden stares from then on out. I heard Daisy Ridley was wooden, but JJ yelled at her and then she was petty much fine. Perhaps they should have had auditions instead of hiring friends, family and people from the prior show Russian Dolls. I would have introduced the cortosis and the Sith master in episode two. Have him save May when she gets in over her head. Let her see her sister but rather than Osha fire at her and miss, May and the Hidden Qmir leave. Still have May do teh dust thing, but they are just gone. There is no need for it to be a mystery of who is killing Jedi and why and also have the mystery of who her master is to May herself. I would also point out that since this is the first introduction to the Disney created High Republic era, maybe a more straight forward story that illustrated how this is different from the prequel era. The stand up comedian padawan kind of makes sense, because you can be an archivist or something, but the overweight padawan doesnt make a lot of sense to me. Maybe he's thin, but hes from a high gravity planet. They need that little five minute thing at the end where the writer explains a little of what the hell is exactly going on. KK said that they killed the canon so writers could be free to write what they want, but they you cant abuse the little bit of canon/ lore that still exists. So I found out that in the Disney Star wars universe the Force can be used by anyone so long as they believe and no training is needed. That black cloud smoke thing, seems completely new. Now if its just a form of fast travel, how about you explain that. Then that scene becomes a mother trying to get her daughter to safety and the officer kills her because he thinks she is lunging at him, not lunging to protect her daughter. it would even make sense if Sol thought she was taking Osha away from him since he wanted a padawan so much. It could also explain how Q'mir killed the wookie jedi so fast and how he go into the mountain compound in the last episode. For a moment, I thought that it was just in Sols mind and she was doing a mind trick on him that only Sol and Jodi could see, so to May, it would look like her mother was standing still and he just stabbed her, but since we see the Zabrak witch do it also, it must be a technique. Where did she go? is she dead? maybe I would have shown someone take child May from the planet. What was she doing for 16 years? Who was she with all that time? I would have show if the witches were killed when they were disconnected from the Wookie mind control or if they were just unconscious. There were clues that the mining colony looked different from the night of the fire. I know she could be planning to reveal these things in the second season which I hope never comes unless they fire the show runner. George wasnt perfect, but at least he understood Star Wars on a fundamental level. All his mistakes were pretty much for the right reasons.

9:42 Sad thing is, I can see what they were trying to do/say, but it wasn't done well. Too often in the real world, you hear stories (in America, at least) about how a cop shot an otherwise innocent person because they were making a 'threatening move', which often turns out to be something like Reaching For Their Wallet......or absolutely NOTHING......... However: Yeah, when someone who admits they follow the Force (ahem) for Evil in the Universe does something THIS sketchy, I can fully understand why he would have taken that as a 'threatening move' and act accordingly (and just cutting off her hands/legs might not have stopped her.....even though she didn't really have any by the time he struck anyway 😅) Also, on the 'Chubby Jedi': If they has just literally made him a Hutt (10 seconds of SFX shouldn't cost THAT much, right?), it would have made more sense, as in 'Legends' there were a couple of Hutt Jedi that I can recall (and ALL Hutts are a bit 'Thicc' 😅)
@chaseazarian2 ай бұрын
I gotta be honest...I feel like people still would have ripped on the Hutt Jedi, but I'd appreciate the ambition! And again, that whole Sol sequence on paper is a good idea, but like you said, it just wasn't done well. Thank you for the comment!

Sidenote: Has anyone realized this Star wars project has the Least amount of Alien species? It's the least diverse Star Wars. It's mostly Humans. Also the locations are so bland & small. There's No impressive locations. There's no wide pan shots of interesting environments. The world is so claustrophobic. The characters are so shallow. We've been seeing such expensive projects, yet they are so terribly designed, terribly managed, Awful writing, awful world design, awful character development, poor aesthetics. So much now feels creatively bankrupt and I really hope we snap out of it and get back to making better things. Better games, better shows, better movies The Acolyte comes off so cheap & tacky.. It's not just the terrible writing & terrible acting. The whole thing is a complete self centered power trip.. It's horrible set design, horrible world building, horrible camera work. It all makes this show feel so small. Like it's filmed in a single green screen room.. Grasping at awful CGI techniques to try and force any bit of a false reality into this mess of a show. It's so far from Legitimate Star wars movies that it feels as if this whole thing is a big parody.. A very expensive parody.. These people have proven they are only capable of writing narcissistic stories that self insert themselves and their own beliefs into anything they do. Even if they get the opportunity to make something from a pre-existing beloved story, they cannot help themselves. They seem to be incapable of creating artistic creations that stray away from their own personal perspective. Instead of showing they are capable of leaning heavily into escapism and creative storytelling.. They have proven time and time again that they are not capable of doing anything even remotely close to that.. (which is weird because that should be one of the most important set of attributes that a movie director, or a actor has so they can be successful at their job....?) How is there no one that will fire these people who openly hate the fans, hate the consumers who made their success in the first place.. Compared to "The Acolyte" If you go back & watch "X-Men the Animated series" It was so well crafted. The story of the struggles of mutants having to deal with humanity was such a universally relatable storyline. Media back then was not afraid to face difficult topics head on. They found really unique ways to abstractly teach people life lessons. They touched on difficult situations & found intelligent ways to convey certain stories. Even when I was all grown up & rewatched it, it really felt like the story is crafted so well & executed at such a high level that anyone is capable of relating to it in someway or another. It's stuff like that, that we are deeply lacking nowadays. So much so that literal kid's cartoons from the 90's told deeper and more mature stories than most media nowadays. Stuff used to take pride in who can find the most creative ways to convey certain things. Who can give the audience certain feelings without overly explaining it. It used to not matter what kind of character, creature, species they were. What matters is that they found ways to convey artistic depictions of the Human condition. Creative ways that can connect us on a deeper level

I’ve been against Disney ever since the sequel trilogy, especially Luke’s character assassination in The Last Jedi. The Mandalorian and Ahsoka won me back a bit, but Book of Boba Fett did Temuera Morrison bad, and deserved a second season just to repair the character development. The Acolyte again ruined it again. I did enjoy Andor though it took me a while to finish it. Side note, insiders say Kathleen Kennedy hated Luke and Mara Jade, and has argued with Jon Favreau regarding Luke in the Mandalorian. They should have reintroduced Luke, Leia, and Han with new actors so they can be explored further in the post original trilogy timeline, bring Mara Jade back to canon and do what they have done but planned out a better sequel trilogy.

Leslie Hedland didn’t just add the cringe, but the lesbians and gay people too. Star Wars is dead, because of her and the awful writers of new projects. But nothing is worse than the Acolyte, oh no, at least for now. Who else would like to see a Marvel TVA short film in which they erase the timeline in which Yoda imagined the events of this show after using Death sticks and the Sequels Timeline??? The TVA should also erase the events of The Book of Boba Fett, but not the crazy Spa meme 😂. Or at least have Deadpool go and kill the characters of these projects. Like if you agree with me.

Lauren Chen didn't put politics into a review channel. Disney did. Not bringing it up or minimizing it does a disservice to understanding the train wreck. Look, you're woke but you like good star wars. I get it. You're not full mind virus. You got the sniffles. But minimizing the single most important element causing the suckage isn't being fair and balanced.
@morxsum6932 ай бұрын
While I have yet to watch the series ( I will watch it soon, don't worry), as an outsider looking in, I feel like the biggest problem now is the people in charge of Star Wars. Kennedy, Headland just literally everyone in the kitchen thinks that only their pleasure matters and no one else's so more and more of this shitty writing and forced politics will happen at the expense of the fans. At first I thought both creators and toxic anti whatever fans are in the wrong but the more I thought about it the toxic fans are becoming less of a problem (Still though, those fans need to do better in terms of criticism). Just seeing the interviews constantly annoys me with the people only talking about politics and barely about the story and hearing about the story just saddens me. PLEASE DISNEY, give us Star Wars where I don't hear a lot of politics and I hear better stories.

The action in this show is atrocious. Nothing makes sense, the shots are bland, the moves are either stupid or ridiculous, the characters stop existing the moment they aren't in the frame otherwise the combat would end, the characters forget basic stuff like (oh, I could just hit him with my anti-lightsaber helmet" or "oh I could just use the force to get my weapon back". Honnestly, I'll take the pretorian fight over this mess, I I find the pretorian fight to be among the worse fights in a big budget movie in the past 20 years.

Me and my kids are SW fans and are usually easy to satisfy. We even enjoyed The book of Boba Fett, Obi wan Kenobi and Ahsoka even if they were sometimes cheesy and badly written. But The Acolyte is probably the worst tv show I've watched these last 10 years (let's says, it's equal to Fear the Walking Dead seasons 6-7-8). There's no likeable characters, the Jedis are Nerdy incompetent weak loosers and incapable of "sensing" anything with the force, all the characters motivations are more than questionable (and change their mind at every turn) and the dialogues are flat and boring. There is no fun moments at all, and we dont get to see much of what could have been fun to see... Missed opportunity here. Poor actors that never got a chance to shine.

I agree with how well homie dismantles the show, without even having to go into every last aspect of how much more terrible writing there actually was through and through. BUT! I disagree with the idea of shying away from criticizing the woke, or really most specifically “the force is female” which is a blatantly foolish banner / mission statement for the franchise. so ya, the show could/should have been better if the actors and writing are better, no doubt, but the insane marketing interviews about it being the gayest, and subsequently that equating to lezwitch immaculate conception, and a random flirtatious pick-up line at the young padawan … it’s just so weird 😂 that’s just crazy … a brand can’t be explicitly antagonistic and hostile to their audience, and in the case of SW, they literally took one of the most famous and valuable IPs in history and were like “there’s a new sheriff in town, and ya’ll are gonna need to fall in line” 😅 um no, no I don’t think we will * and all of that is to say, EVERYONE LOVES TRINITY!!! but that’s because he is BALANCED with Neo. It’s just weird how ham-fisted they’ve leaned into the “force is female” insanity…

Thanks for the compliment man! I just feel like too many people focus on that side of things while breaking something down, but the reality is if these shows and movies were AMAZING with the same exact cast, I don't think people would be complaining as much (obviously some still would), because good storytelling exceeds everything else. It's when people get handed the keys to a franchise they clearly don't understand, that's when things go wrong. Give me as many female force users as you want, just make them GOOD CHARACTERS lol!

It's so hard to find an honest critique of the show amidst the torrential shitstorm of poisoned discourse from anti-woke chuds. With all the folks spamming 1 star reviews before it even came out, I have to dismiss out of hand anyone dunking on it after just the first 2 episodes. It was kinda meh, but there was still time to take it places so I kept putting off final judgement. Then episode 6 onward everything just started falling off a cliff and it seemed like they just gave up trying to make anything make sense scene to scene.

Disney Star Wars is bad. No matter who the main character is. Maybe there is actually a handful of men who actually think women in a lead role is deplorable. I can point out all types of errors, in all the original 6 star wars movies, but I'm not filled with absolute hatred over them. 3. s.w. acolyte was entertaining & would improve if it was 24 episode tv series, if fans demanded it. 4. the actors & actresses ranged from fair to awesome. good or bad the plot original. 5. you cannot expect star wars to be exactly the same it came out in 1977. different culture, different crew, different tech. 6. some parts are good & some are bad. 7. try to accept it all, with the expectation of it getting better by suggesting ideas, instead of making pure venomous comments. 8. if george lucas hates all the new material, then he should had done his best to continue with saga instead of giving fans decades gaps of continued film material. 9. also, with the exception of "the Mandalorian", it seems as though viewers hate every single new material from s.w. 10. If you hate all new s.w. material produced by disney, why do you waste your personal time viewing & then making negative comments? 11. star wars has never, ever, been a perfect saga.

6:00 a) She never says she wants to kill all the Jedi. b) She wants to turn herself in, because she thinks her Master's task is impossible, she'll fail, and he'll kill her, but he's far away and the Jedi could protect her. She says all of that to Qimir. But then she realizes that her Master was right there, cutting the Jedi to ribbons, and he IS Qimir, to whom she'd just confessed her intention to betray him, so surrendering to the Jedi became pointless. Her new objective was to get the hell away, which was difficult to do while some bitch was kicking her, cuffing her and Miranda-ing her. That is why she fought Jecki. This isn't the mfg "Mulholland Drive", it shouldn't be that hard to figure out as long as you pay even the minimum amount of attent... oooh, that explains it.
