This is why I think the BMW i8 is the best daily driver. I have had this car now for more than 4 year & its has won my heart over as the best daily driver for its unique mix of styling, performance and innovation. What do you think?

Such a fantastic car... I always get really excited when I see one in the wild. I rarely see nice cars, but I just saw an i8 on the highway yesterday. I got really really excited and my coworker just looked at me strange haha. I will drive one someday.

And even in 2024 it looks like a car from the future. Did some test driving last week and I'm completely sold. Apart from the stunning design, its a very easy comfortable driving experience (probably most of the time in today's traffic) However, when there's room, you can also enjoy the acceleration and speed every now and then.

My dad is looking into the i8 and he wants to be Able to daily drive if needed I know sometimes parts and maintenance can be expensive I’m curious to know how that stacks up over the year or so u have had urs? Is it reliable he will still have his other car but I’m sure he will want to drive the I8 a lot

I’m late to the party but I did the same thing you did, traded an F10 M5 for a 2015 i8. The i8 is 200 hp down to the M5 but somehow manages to feel quicker. I had also read a lot of comments about the i8 being slow, but was pleasantly surprised on my first test drive. Totally agree on the Jekyll and Hyde personality as well. I can’t believe how far I go between gas station stops with an 11 gallon gas tank.The car is underappreciated. I think that most of the criticism comes from people who have not driven or owned one.

I bought a 2019 i8 Roadster 4 months ago and completely agree with everything you say here. Incredible car to own and drive. My best friend has an R8, C8 Vette, Twin Turbo Porsche, 3 Ferraris and an older NSX. He also has an i8 Roadster, same year as mine and guess which he likes best all around? You guessed it, the i8. This was in large measure why I got an i8. People can talk smack about the i8 all they want, but I find most who do have never experienced driving one.

I couldn’t agree with you more. It’s fun to drive and you can actually daily drive it! I wonder what your thoughts are now. Your reaction does show that you enjoy the experience it offers yet you also have a Lamborghini and have possibly driven other fast exotics, but still thrilled with the i8? That’s says a lot about this car. It truly is something special!

Went for a test drive in a 2014 i8 yesterday and loved it. The only thing stopping me from pulling the trigger are the horror stories i have heard about issues. Glad to see that yours is still going strong after so long, which shows testament to its longevity. Have you had any issues? How many miles have you clocked up so far? I think we need an update video.

Every car has horror stories. I have been fortunate but if you find a well sorted car, buy it. It is no different than if you were looking at any other used car really. I will make an update video in the Sprint. Good luck with your search!

Indeed, buying a car, there's always some risk. I'm buying one from a BMW dealer/garage with maintenance history. And I'm having the battery inspected before purchase. Maybe a bit more expensive, but generally, BMW's policy is not to scam people. @DoctaM3

Just picked up a low-mileage (9k) Protonic Yellow as my DD. Traded an M6 Gran Coupe for it. Loving it. Sport is my default mode (traction off), but when there's traffic and it's stop-n-go, I switch to all electric. That electric torque is just sublime - in my M6, coming out of a 90 degree right-turn, your power choices were either "bog" or "go sideways", but the i8 electric motor allows for steep, linear torque directly out of the turn. Such a blast. Tell you what - I'm 6'3" and 220lbs and there's PLENTY of cabin space for me. Getting in and out is also easy - once you nail down your technique (actually EASIER than my M6 was, in tight spots).

I'm surprised I haven't seen a McLaren in your stable although a 570s wouldn't be a comparable replacement for the I8. I'd suggest a Tesla but they're so boring compared to the I8.

I appreciate your services to the i8 DoctaM3 ;) I've had mine for a few years now and find it the most balanced daily driver too (a mantle I did not think would be taken away from the 911). Videos like this help counter the misunderstanding around the car. The whole notion of 'a 3-cylinder engine from a mini' has somewhat harmed its reputation in the UK despite that highly tuned engine winning awards. Keep up the good work sir.

Have you tried the new Honda Acura NSX? Vastly underrated, very high MPG and faster than a Tesla.

As far as performance goes, there has to be enough to be good enough in the real world. Back in the late 80s between different Porsches, one of the lower-end, non-911 Porsches had less power than one of the higher-end 911 variants, but it was much quicker at speeds like a 20-40 pull, which is important for stuff like city driving. Sounds like the i8 is no slouch to stuff like that. Also, aren't you able to do stuff like pre-heat the i8 to a warm temperature before climbing inside? A nice advantage of an electric assist. One thing I wish they did was add an actual winter mode, so all motors run, but with slower and better-optimized throttle response. Ultimately I think this would be a tricky car to replace. The Karma Revero is stylish but not all that efficient. Teslas don't have full range being full-EV, and they're not coupes. Although, at least the doors on the Model X also go up :D I know that's one big appeal of the i8 hahaha

The cost of driving seems ridiculously low. I have a 2014 Audi RS5 that I have used as a daily driver for the past 150,000 miles. My mpg is 20 with very spirited driving so I spend $450 to $500/mo. in gas. How is the maintenance cost of the i8? I spent $8000 (above gas) in maintenance last year and will be replacing the cats and all 4 rotors and brakes for another $6,000 in January. I would be interested in the i8 for daily driving if it is less maintenance than my RS5 experience.

I know.. this thing has spoiled me. Maintenance has been very little too but only recently did it go out of warranty so I have to pay for oil change and some minor stuff for a couple of hundred dollars. I did have 2 fuel release module issues which were fixed under warranty, routine door strut replacement (also under warranty--this was preventative according to them even though nothing was wrong). So yea, I have a hard time finding the replacement.

I use my 2016 i8 as a daily driver. Is anyone aware of an aftermarket upgrade for the battery. Could use 10mi extra range. Not expecting anything to exist but you don't know unless you ask.

Over 2K miles. I push the car for sure but not everyday--see my other cars. I have been fortunate in minimal repairs. All under warranty (Remote fuel door release, regularly scheduled door shocks). nothing big.

It will never go under 45k (and that's if you're super lucky to find one at that price), it's gonna be stuck at 50k forever. It's a great car, If i were you i'd just do a down payment of 25k and then pay a monthly fee of 500-600$ for it for a few years.

My buddy has a 2015 bmw I8 and I will say that it's not very comfortable on road trips longer than an hour or 2 , seats are too stiff.

True if you’re in the back seat but I have done many trips over 3 or more hours and driver and front passenger are fine. You don’t have 11-way seat adjustment so maybe that’s the issue. Was it?
