Why The CHAMELEON was not Threatening or Scary in in KUNG FU PANDA 4...

There wasn't a single moment with the Chameleon that felt or scary in Kung Fu Panda 4. I get it, technically she's supposed to be a big threat, but the movie just treats her like a joke, kinda like they did with Kai. At least Kai had a few moments where he gave you the chills, like when he nabbed Crane's chi on that creepy old ship, or when he duked it out with Shifu and the gang at the Jade Palace. But with the Chameleon, nothing. The closest we got was at the start, when she was playing mind games with one of the big bad guys. When she morphed into that elephant, I thought she was gonna do something seriously sinister, like take him out or really rough him up. But nope, she just shoves him down some stairs, and even that was played for laughs. It felt like I was watching a bad Marvel movie, where every time she could've been scary, they just turned it into a punchline. I was psyched for a female villain in Kung Fu Panda, especially one with such a cool design, but man, did this movie drop the ball. Thanks a lot, Mike Mitchell, for ruining what could've been awesome.

I think another thing that hurts her that I've heard some people mention is that she doesn't have much connection to the main cast. Tai Lung, Shen and Kai all had strong ties to Shifu, Po and Oogway. Chameleon does with Zhen, but we're not really as attached to her as we are with the others.

Tai Lung did this best, and you can tell even people today still think Tai Lung deserved the Dragon Warrior title. That's good, I think that means they succeeded. That's just plot armor 😂 she was basically just given insane powers from the get go, without any meaningful past that can support her having such strength. Tai Lung was a one man army monster that was THE STRONGEST Kung Fu Warrior, Shen was a crafty maniac who really made himself look unstoppable, and Kai possesed a lot of knowledge about Kung Fu and had ties with Oogway. Chameleon had no kind of development to support her being that strong.

I agree though. He was actually my current favorite villain at the time before this movie came out. I had a feeling that Chameleon was gonna become my new favorite villain when I saw the trailer for KFP4 last year in hopes that she would give the other bad guys a second chance after summoning them all back, allowing Tai Lung to end his rivalry with Po becoming his friend instead and finding peace again with Master Shifu after gaining his trust, possibly even to get his wish granted by helping Po save the valley and no longer be remembered as a fugitive anymore. It’s a shame the fourth movie wasted such a good chance at giving Tai Lung the redemption arc we were all hoping for in which he returns home to his master and chooses to stay behind with Po, finding a new home again. Basically the way the screenwriters wrote the Chameleon when she had such potential to be a better character is what made me think otherwise about her when I thought she would become my next favorite villain. Especially her motivations to only use the other bad guys to steal their powers for herself and then making them her prisoners rather than returning them back home. Basically someone more willing to give the opportunity of offering a second chance for the other bad guys by helping them fulfill their long awaited goals in return for her returning her favors rather than just helping herself. Something that would make her seem a bit more trustworthy as a character if she’s in favor of the other bad guys too despite her wicked nature. Another thing that fell empty for me was the fact that her origin story is a lot more bleaker with less clarity unlike the other three bad guys who came before her, and that she also lacks a proper name too. That’s a good one though. Now everyone likes Kai after meeting her. I think the reason for Kai being overlooked as a character by the audience prior to meeting chameleon in KFP4 is because the third movie does not provide much insight on what his past friendship with Master Oogway the turtle was like before they turned against each other. We all know it’s because he wanted to steal the chi of the other pandas in the village who helped heal Master Oogway’s battle scars, but we don’t know why. Either because he wanted to help heal his friend in the future or because he just wanted to increase his own power after growing fascinated with the qualities Chi possessed. Also in the KFP 3 when Kai returns home to the mortal world after spending 500 years in the Spirit realm, we discover that most of China has forgotten about him because of Oogway who somehow chose to erase his legacy, further straining their relationship as Kai sought to collect Chi from other warriors while Oogway learned to give it from the other pandas. I think if the animators gave more of reason for Kai to want to steal power from others while Oogway turned against his friend trapping him in the Spirit realm to stop him, then Kai might have been a more interesting character for the audience. I still liked him though because of his cool weaponry, armor, character design, deep menacing voice, his ability to transform victims into jade warriors as well as that catchy tune that plays for his background theme music which gets stuck in my head whenever I hear it play. Now I think Tai Lung is my new favorite villain of the series because I find him relatable and wish the animators gave him a second chance in the fourth movie where he stays behind with Po to become his next successor and regains Master Shifu’s trust, realizing what it means to be a true hero by placing other before you and listening to the guidance of your mentors who put faith in you, something he did not have a student growing up and it makes me feel bad for him. It bothers me that no one seems to be in favor of helping him achieve his goals. I would help him once he learns to find peace and build trust with others at first. With that said, that places Kai as my next favorite villain after him. Chameleon fell flat for me because they wasted her character. Not what I was expecting at all.

I think the reason for that based on what I’ve heard is that his origin story did not have enough clarity regarding his past relationship with Oogway the tortoise after he brought him to the panda village to be healed and why he wanted to steal their Chi in the first place, not to mention they were also left curious why his legacy had been erased and people all over China forgot who he was just to further elaborate. Other than that I’m sure they still liked his character in other aspects as much as I did, I must admit. I particularly liked his theme song the best as you mentioned earlier which gets stuck in my head.

This movie had a whole ton of problems, aside from the Villain being sub-par. In Kung-fu Panda 1, Tai Lung was a great villain, not only because he was imposing but because his back story was compelling. He wasn't evil for the sake of being evil, he was a broken person, groomed to be the greatest martial artist of the age, but deprived of the one thing he was always told was his birthright, being the Dragon Warrior. In Kung-fu Panda 2, Shen was Intimidating and cruel, and his history with Po's people made him a compelling foil specifically for Po. He's the whole reason Po was orphaned in the first place. Kai was less interesting, but still had his intimidating moments. Honestly the most interesting thing about Kai is his history with Ugway. We learn that they were both warriors, and that Ugway didn't have such a benevolent path until he was healed by and learned from the Pandas. Kai continued the bid for power and the campaign to conquer that he and Ugway had started together, but Ugway learned of a better path and chose to change. That the best part about Kai being a villain. The Chameleon though? She's just all about power, with no other real motive, similar to Kai but without the interesting back story. The movie also lacked the Furious 5's involvement, which honestly made the previous movies better with their inclusion. But I think the largest missed opportunity was with Tai Lung. The whole central point of the movie is Po finding a successor, and with how prevalent Tai Lung was during the trailers, it would have made much more sense for the movie to function as a redemption Arc for Tai Lung, and where he finally achieved his dream of being the Dragon Warrior, the successor to Po, and letting go of his anger and hate. It would have been so much better to have the whole story come full circle, beginning with Tai Lung demanding to be the Dragon Warrior through his prowess in the first movie, and ending with him actually earning the position with the help and guidance of Po in this movie. But that's not what we got, we got Tai Lung basically sidelined for no reason, a half-baked redemption for him, and some new character from out of the blue becoming the successor.

In her mind it did. Po would never have been the Dragon Warrior had not Oogway insisted Shifu trust in Fate and commit to training him. The Chameleon didn't get that luxury and had to depend on herself. She seems to be from a fairly wealthy family so she could devote her life to Plan B, being a sorceress.

Imo Shen is one of the best written characters I've seen in movies and he has gotten better when I grew older. All of the other villains had good reasons why they have become bad and we can unserstand them despite their terrible acts. They also act as the negative to the movies themes. Like Tai Lung just wanted to be his best for Shifu and felt betrayed. He did not decide to view himself as good as he is but continued to desire approval. Shen was scared and thought his parents would be proud of him yet he was banned and never left his path. He felt betrayed too. He did not choose to change. Kai felt betrayed by his brother. He wanted to have more and more power, and in the end he dies because of it. While Po shared the power of chi with everyone and ultimately had much more from this due to it. Chameleon wanted to learn Kung Fu but was denied because she was smol. Despite Mantis existing. The lesson is that she turned evil due to magic which was not thw right thing to do. The motive lacks build up and pad off, feels less connected and thought through with the character and is rushed like the rest of the movie.

yeah i realized that too. another thing I didn’t like was the “self promotion” if you will. like the opening scene where she shifts into tai lung and says “yes, it is I, Tai Lung!” one thing I like about dreamworks villains is that they don’t need to announce who they are to portrait fear, like Tai Lung, Death from puss n boots, Grimmel from HTTYD 3, the list goes on. Overcoming ego, I guess. Po learned to humble himself, which is what Chameleon never did. The only reason she lost is because she celebrated her victory too early and turned off her powers to fight Zhen, and even dared her to try to use her new move, not expecting her to actually be able to do it. Po learned to put aside his own pride in being dragon warrior to let someone else have a chance, which ultimately allowed them to win. Chameleon is like the dark reflection of Po, as she always wanted to be a great master, but instead she took what she wanted unfairly. Po and her only had one main thing in common for most of this movie: ego. Po didn’t want to give up his position, and Chameleon wanted all the power in the world. In enlisting Zhen’s help, Po trapped the Chameleon into a state of overconfidence. Thus, despite their similarities, Po did what Chameleon didn’t; he became humble and admitted he needed someone else’s help. If Po fought alone, he likely wouldn’t have survived. Instead, he used Chameleon’s own ego against her to win. Ironically she was defeated using something she once thought she was: a small creature with great potential, but heavily overlooked and underestimated

I'll be honest, I don't agree. She could've been used better, and her background could've been explored more thoroughly. But her scene with the crimes bosses feels like it established her as an intimidating character. Despite her diminutive size, they feared her for good reason. They never knew what she might do next, let alone who she might be next. It's her unpredictability that makes her believeably frightening despite not being physically imposing like Tai Lung or General Kai, and being a villain is more of a psychological game than a matter of brute strength. Not to mention, Viola Davis' voice just commands our attention

How dare you say that kai is joke, do you find the kung fu panda villain that had supernatural powers , created a technique of taking chi rather than give it, defeated every kung fu master in the spirit realm (including tai lung and shen) before defeating oogway and taking his chi and then taking the chi of every master in china, destroying the jade palace , and even po couldn't defeat him that he had to sacrifice himself and using wushi finger hold on himself, and has a cool scary theme, did you find that a joke.
