Sonic the Hedgehog[a] is a Japanese video game series and media franchise created and owned by Sega. The franchise follows Sonic, an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog who battles the evil Doctor Eggman, a mad scientist. The main Sonic the Hedgehog games are platformers mostly developed by Sonic Team; other games, developed by various studios, include spin-offs in the racing, fighting, party and sports genres. The franchise also incorporates printed media, animations, a 2020 feature film, and merchandise.
The first Sonic game, released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis, was developed after Sega requested a mascot character to compete with Nintendo's mascot Mario. Its success helped Sega become one of the leading video game companies during the 16-bit era of the early 1990s. Sega Technical Institute developed the next three Sonic games in addition to Sonic Spinball (1993). After a hiatus during the unsuccessful Saturn era, the first major 3D Sonic game, Sonic Adventure, was released in 1998 for the Dreamcast. Sega exited the console market and shifted to third-party development in 2001, continuing the series on Nintendo, Xbox, and PlayStation systems.
While Sonic games often have unique game mechanics and stories, they feature recurring elements such as the ring-based health system, locations, and speedy gameplay. Games typically feature Sonic setting out to stop Eggman's schemes for world domination, and the player navigates levels that include springs, slopes, bottomless pits, and vertical loops. While Sonic and Eggman were the only characters introduced in the first game, the series would go on to have a large cast of characters; some, such as Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, and Shadow the Hedgehog, starred in self-titled spin-offs. The franchise has also been represented in crossovers such as Sega All-Stars and Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. series.
Sonic the Hedgehog is Sega's flagship franchise and one of the bestselling video game franchises, selling 89 million by March 2011 and grossing over $5 billion by 2014. Series sales and free-to-play mobile game downloads totaled 920 million by 2019. The Genesis Sonic games have been described as representative of the culture of the 1990s and listed among the greatest of all time. Although later games have been criticized for a perceived decline in quality compared to earlier installments, Sonic is influential in the video game industry and is frequently referenced in popular culture.

Sonic 2 is the most popular, influential Sonic game because it was packaged with the Genesis in 1992. In those days, gaming companies focused on shipping hardware, much different than today. So because of this more casual gamers remember Sonic 2. Sonic 3 was not packaged with the system and also released just ahead of the 3D gaming Era. But the critical reviews of the time showed the Sonic 3 was clearly the best of the trilogy, even before Sonic and Knuckles released. If you read most of the magazines/newspapers from the time, Sonic 3 was commonly recognized as the best, improving on 2 in most ways.

Really enjoyable video. I do agree with most of your points and decisions. You’re editing is really well done and not too much, which is a problem for other channels. It's a tie between 3K and Mania for me. I think 3K has the better form of art direction, more variety in locals (I thought Mania had too many industrialised levels), and music. But I do think that Mania has the better level design in both new and remixed levels (to the point where I much prefer the remixed levels over their original versions in their respective games), and a better balance of speed, platforming and exploration (although that's thanks to 3K for doing this). In the end, both games are apples and oranges and are some of the finest Sonic games.

By the time Sonic 3 and Knuckles came out the attitude and personality was through the roof. Mario was put his place. It's a shame Sonic couldn't keep the momentum going because he would've flattened the red plumber cold.

At the core of any good Sonic game is momentum physics. If it doesn't have that, it isn't a good Sonic game. The day Sega went down the toilet, all the old Sonic fans moved to things like CSGO Surf, Marble Blast Ultra, Bunny Hoping in Titanfall, among many other experiences where skill and momentum collide. That at it's core is what makes a Sonic game fun, no amount of linear speed will ever equal the thrill of rolling down a hill, around a loop and off a jump at the mercy of the game's physics. No amount of scripted spectacle will ever make a Sonic game fun that is on rails. There is actually a deep hole in gaming where momentum based games could be, and Sonic was the first, best one. But that market is completely unsated because nobody seems to understand why these games were popular to begin with. They think it was the characters, the story or the speed. When it was really the feeling of flinging yourself about, taking best advantage of the 'skate park' you were offered to rocket, launch and blast through levels. Or fail horribly because you mistimed your jumps and rolls.

The ONLY reason why I rank Sonic 2 lower than Sonic 1 is because I can't consistently beat Sonic 2; Metropolis Zone and beyond (save for Sky Chase) kills my run of Sonic 2. I can't even get all the Chaos Emeralds. So it's not that I think 2 is bad, because it's definitely an improvement, but if I can't beat it consistently, then I think there's a problem.

My list as you count it by individual release i would change a bit... 6 sonic 1 (where else can I put this? It's experimental pretty sweet it gets you established and in spirit green hill is your go to first lesson in learning sonic) 5 Sonic 3 alone (i know it's low but it's actually not that great as a standalone game and it's save feature is useless since it's even less levels than sonic 2) 4 sonic CD (because it's arguably a better package on its own with more story and timezones to explore offering more replayability outside a regular run through. 3 sonic and knuckles (it amps up the story it has a better tale and ending) 2 sonic 2 (because really the gameplay is on point and it has good variety "if you ask me it's the one game if you are to play any sonic game this one is it, its fun in the casual run but a real challenge if you go for supersonic") 1 Sonic mania (because it has that little bit of all the previous titles with modern upgrades it's surely the new go to introduction game if you want to indoctrinate the new generation so to speak as it is more forgiving and kind to new players and steadily amps up the difficulty acordingly so that you feel accomplished by the end of the game on a regular play through)

Sonic 2 is my favorite one because it was the first sonic game I have ever played and it also has my favorite character before the 3D games tails. I first played it when I was like 6 or 8 and I sucked at speed games then but I loved them and thanks to tails I could fly and strategize before trying anything against the enemies which yes I did as an 8 year old I over think everything even now.

I'm one of those weird people who considers Sonic 3 and Knuckles a single game, so that's the best Sonic game. If I had to split them up, I pick S & K, even without a save feature or the lock-on feature. Sonic 3 has some great levels with some amazing soundtracks, but it just doesn't have as appealing of an ending. It feels unfinished, because it is. That's where Sonic and Knuckles comes in. It picks up from the middle and brings you to the grand finale. This game gives you the best ending to any classic Sonic game, particularly for Sonic if he snagged all of the emeralds.

Better synthesized music in sonic mania? More like it has guitar and orchestration. The mega drive literally has a synthesizer, it's not chiptune like you say. Limited channels yes, but it's definitely synthesized apart from like 2 psg channels. It's very impressive for the time and even for today. I appreciate the rock sound of 06, heroes, adventure and unleashed, but 2d sonic is all about the synthesizer because of the great sound that the mega drive had

Also I don't understand why you arbitrarily decided that S3&K doesn't count as a game and then hold the level count against Sonic 3. When talking about Sonic 3 it is generally understood that the sonic & knuckles levels are part of the game, and almost anyone playing sonic 3 today will play all the levels, making the level count 14, the highest in the series. It's clearly the biggest game in the series with more to offer than sonic mania does. Sonic mania could have been a better game if it had a story that made sense in a world of only new levels.

As someone who's just started playing Sonic games with Sonic 1, I actually don't mind Marble Zone being slow. I'm not skilled enough to actually go fast, because I will probably end up bumping into obstacles and dying/losing my rings. No, what I _do_ mind are those *_f^%king Caterkillers._* :v Even after figuring out how to spin on the ground, they _still_ manage to hit me for seemingly no reason and frustrate me to no end. Thank goodness they only appear in two zones. That, and the section in Act 3 where you have to jump on small crushers or else you have to get back up for like 2 minutes. That part was pretty annoying. Everything else felt more like I was just bad at the game. _(note: I haven't made it past Spring Yard Zone yet)_

Of course Sonic Mania in first place because it's more modern (true), has original levels (more than 50% false) and isn't sold as a nostalgic game but a brand new one (false). Don't get me wrong, the game is good and I like it. But seeing the nostalgia thing and counting most of the zones and even some special stages are taken from other games, the game doesn't feel like an original classic game at all and I can't praise a game that's not even original. So, to me S3&K beats Sonic Mania in many ways and Sonic Mania has a second position. But ok, it's your opinion. I actually like Sonic CD more than Sonic 1
