Why the Clone Voices Changed

The clone trooper voices from Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith are very different than the voices from the Clone Wars and The Bad Batch. So why did they change? And what's the significance of the change? Join me for a deep dive into these interesting questions of the Star Wars universe.

These are more petty excuses than solid reasons. The parallel example is why blaster or laser shots went from sounding deep and electronic to ending up as squeaky chew toys. Dee’s voice is fine for specific roles not all of them. There were more options since he has over hundred characters to play as. The filoni wars is a lack luster joke that insults and mills the EU of Star Wars. All Filoni media is not real Star Wars. No. Not The Clone Wars. Though a fair number are unique enough, most are very similar, especially in the earlier seasons. The Bad Batch has more unique clones and voices and you can tell all the named clones apart in it just by voice most of the time.

The later video game voice clips are from _Battlefront_ _II_ (2005). If it wasn't mentioned, Morrison also lent his talent to _Republic_ _Commando_ (2005).

Tem does have the range. His voices for Jango, Cody and Boba are all different. Jango’s is unfiltered Māori with a roguish gruffness. Cody and the other clones speak with a more refined militaristic accent, which becomes harsher after Order 66. Boba’s is an even raspier version of Jango’s to convey the damage to his vocal chords from the Sarlacc. So we know that Tem already employs some basic methods to distinguish his roles. I believe he would have been fully capable of voicing the clones in animation as distinct characters. He simply wasn’t given the opportunity. The reason his clone trooper portrayal isn’t as varied as Dee Bradley Baker’s is because it’s unnecessary. Besides Cody and Boss, all the other clone troopers he’s voiced are unnamed side characters. In a feature film, it was unnecessary to give each individual basic trooper unique vocal mannerisms; doubly so for Battlefront.

For the prequels the Clones weren't even designed to be individuals, so as you say what could Tem actually do?. I think people literally forget that, they were meant to be serious, soldiery and slightly more creative biological droids in those films, That's it. George later changed his mind and decided to make them more individualistic a few years later. So I think people judge Morrison on the range end too harshly, he did what George asked him to. I think he will surprise all these people and doubters when older Rex pops up.

The clone accents are really interesting too. Temura’s accent is a natural Kiwi accent and sometimes British English, while Baker’s is more Australian. It’s interesting since a lot of accents in the saga are based on real world accents for particular reasons; Ryloth being based on the beauty of Paris hence the French accents. I’m the case of the clones the British-Kiwi accent is more pure than the Australian accents. In addition Baker can do other European based accents; such as Scottish for Droidbait. Irish, South African, and Caribbean accents have been heard as well: a perfect analogy for the clones and the Fetts.

In the Original Battlefront Games, Temuerra Morrison only voices The 501st Troops in the Story line but in Game and while playing, You can notice that the Voices of the clones really aren't Temuerra Morrison but are someone else, Did you notice that?

True! Interestingly, it seems to be that this has been purposely done in multiple Star Wars games to help distinguish Jango, Boba, and elite clones (such as the 501st journal narrator) from the regular troops in-game

The original voice lines make more sense and I do like them but maybe they weren't happy with Temuerra's delivery, to be honest he's not much of a voice actor or hiring him to do all the voice lines was too expensive, it wasn't everyday when the actor reprizes his character in a video game. It's really unclear why this happened, to be honest

I like both Tem *and* Dee's performances as the clones. Like you said, Tem does a good job with the more dramatic, more impactful moments like Order 66. Dee has fun with the role, really making it his and adding individual personality to the clones.

Dee Bradley Baker's vocal range is very intriguing. From the deep-voiced Wrecker, to the cynical Crosshair. Temuera Morrison might not have the biggest projective voice from all the big stars people are used to such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, but his voice sounds very natural and realistic for the original man Jango and the perfect clone Boba, which gives the feel that they are completely independent from the Republic, Empire or any governing body. Even being both canon, I don't treat the CGI series and the live-action series the same, but they are equally enjoyable.

Temura wasn’t given a chance tbh. He’s got the (obviously) perfect voice and a ton of range. Every clone and character he’s ever done, even the 501st trooper in kenobi, had different inflection, tone, and style of speech. Not at all saying Baker’s voices are bad or misplaced. But Temura I think would have done a very good job. He himself is an expressive individual with a great sense of comedic timing and delivery.

If in Bad Batch they had Temura Morrison voice a man impersonating a clone trooper, and in Book of Boba Fett season two they have Dee Bradley Baker play a guy trying to impersonate Boba Fett, and then reveal that it's the same guy who I'd call Jodo Kast just for the fun of it.

And for Bad Batch it could just be a comic relief moment, it'd be nice to have more jokes that aren't just Wrecker isn't smart or Wrecker likes to blow stuff up.

Morrison fit back before the inhibitor chips weren't part of the lore. He had a coldness to his voice that made them all willingly betraying the Jedi they had fought alongside for years believable. With the clone wars came the rise of clones having much more independence and stronger relationships with their Jedi, meaning that same cold voice no longer suits them as well

Dee Baker delivered an excellent and varied performance, but my only issue is that he sounds nothing at all like Temuera; making the animated clones feel like different beings from the movie clones. I'm pretty sure working with and getting used to Baker caused the writers to portray the clones differently even as they are written

There is a big difference which is skirted around here, or at least not addressed directly. They’re different accents, Bakers impression is entirely Australian whereas Morrison the original is Maori (New Zealand). They’re not actually the same at all and it always annoyed me for no good reason.

Although, I will say Dee Bradley Baker's range to all the clones did the unthinkable in making most of these characters feel distinct just by the way each of them speak. Especially in Bad Batch, where most of the cast is essentially Dee talking to himself for 25 minutes. You would think it would all blend together and get stale, but it doesn't at all. I give him so much credit as a voice actor. He's easily my favorite!

During his appearance in The Clone Wars he's a normal clone commando with a regular voice until he gets blown up in a big rhydonium explosion, and then in Rebels he has that high voice, unique laugh, and acts a little crazy. Could be from his struggles with the Empire, the explosion's effect on him, or both I suppose, depending on what sounds most interesting for your own head-canon!

Actually, the first change to the clone voices was in the 2003 miniseries, where they used in American accent. More cost-effective I guess, but it's too bad they didn't think about using Dee Bradley Baker back then. It could be pretty jarring going from attack of the clones, the miniseries, then revenge of the Sith.

Also they wanted to emphasize different characterization of each clone, and Tem, as good of an actor as he is, has absolutely no vocal range. Morrison is easily my favorite basically cuz of the battlefront 501st journal. Thats a warrior who have seen war and is scarred by it. That being said, i really have to give cred to baker as well based on talent alone. Although i prefer morrisons more ruffer voice, baker being able to voice every clone with subtle differences is just incredible!

I hate reading these comments hating on Baker. And its for many reasons. "Oooh I hate inhibitor chips" or "I hate how the clones aren't just stormtroopers all over again." But despite all that, the real reason I hate it is because Dee Bradley Baker did his damn best for these clones, he tried so hard to make these characters something we can enjoy and people hate that. 1:26 Man this dude has such a great voice. He's just talking about the color scheme of his costume and he sounds like a badass. Baker is very good but Temuera Morrison's performance is iconic.

Temuera Morrison’s is better, they just need to have better directing. All his lines in Battlefront II 2005 were phenomenally well done to help set the tone and immersion into warfare in Star Wars. Dave Filoni is not a good director by any standard.

To be fair, Morrison still voices any live action clone you see in newer media. They even use his face for the veteran clone in Obi-Wan.

It explains why every clone talk separately instead of all together now but in Bad Batch the clones argue and all talk together which must’ve taken Baker a long to time to record those lines and for the developers to put the voices together

Dee Bradley baker is one of my favorite voice actors cause one, he is a giant part of my childhood and even know, but also he does things I didn’t even know. Pretty sure he is the “voice” for the jockey, and smoker in left For dead, and another monster from another game I can’t remember. This dude is in basically everything I have either seen or played and it’s awesome

Basically the cartoons dumbed the clones down to meet that Teen rating for kids to watch and enjoy “stereotypical” characters you’d expect from a cartoon. Cause of you think about it, these clones shouldn’t have any personality. All raised in a factory and closely together, they can’t develop a personality which is why the movies Clones were stale and boring. So, dumb them down. Make them cheer or angry over nothing and never being terminated for it.

I don't know man, Temuera Morrison really made Boss feel like his own clone in Republic Commando. I'm glad that game got individual voice actors (Andrew Chaikin, Raphael Sbarge, Jonathan David Cook) for the members of Delta Squad, but obviously your point about efficiency in a long running show stands.

I have no problem with Dee Bradley Bakers vocal range, talent, or tone. He's an amazing voice actor. I have never liked his clone voice because he legitimately SUCKS at a New Zeeland/Maori accent. It sounds like a confused American tourist trying to blend in the UK, but he's trying to do an Australian accent.

Fun fact, you can hear where Dee Bradley Baker got his clone voice from in Avatar the Last Airbender Season 1 Episode 6 at 18:45. He was one of the prison guards.

@@BansheeNT-D 1) I've personally never read the Republic Commando's novels nor personally ever grew up with that game due to not being the biggest fan at the time, besides the old Battlefront and LEGO games, so I have no nostalgic attachment to it. 2) The clones, personalities and such, aren't all softies, they just are given more time to be actual characters, but I have seen the cutscenes of RC, which does show their personalities well....but their voices not being the same voice actor just doesn't sound right as they are "clones" after all, like with how DBB did the voices. Not cool, dude.

Shame you bring up Battlefront in the thumbnail and used it as an example at the end, but never talk about the fact that it, and most other videogames of the time, _also_ didn't use Temuera Morrison for most of the clones. They mainly used multiple voice actors, typically with American accents, mainly because it wasn't yet clear if the Clone Troopers and the Stormtroopers of the OT were one and the same -- if so, it would only make sense that they'd have varied voices and American accents like the Stormtroopers. Temuera was only really brought in for significant clone characters like Boss in Republic Commando and the narrator in Battlefront II, and other voice actors playing clones weren't instructed to mimic him at all; it was only after years of EU stuff and the Clone Wars cartoon taking off that the decision was made to give them all Temuera's kiwi accent and have them all share a single voice actor whenever possible.

For animated series, I prefer Clone Wars clone voice actor over The Clone Wars 2008's Bakers. Baker's for some reason annoyed me even as a kid when watching the movie back in theaters.

I’m pretty sure the main reason is because it’s too expensive for them to keep using Morrison for every clone ever, not to mention he was probably getting tired from all the clones he had to voice in both aotc and rots along with several video games.

To be honest, I love Temuera Morrison for his roles as Jango and Boba and Jake the Muss but I really prefer Dee Bradley Baker as the voice of the clones in the animated series. It may be me just being used to hearing DBB all these years but I can't see Tem Morrison doing the deep voice of Wrecker and Hardcase, the nerd voice of Tech, the snake voice of Crosshair and Cutup's Scott-Irish Accent. If it was the other clones I could see Tem doing it.

Nah, I couldn't stand the new Clone and Droid voices for the TV show, that's partly why I couldn't get into it as a kid. The other reason was the terrible animation. Every character looked like they were made of wood. There's a reason why the 2008 Clone Wars movie was a complete flop and I agree with that, it was terrible.
