This video is everything we already knew, just put more eloquently However it does not gives in solution which is unfortunate 1. Land reforms/redistribution - a Land Value Tax will drop the land values close to zero. It will take away the power of local feudal lords whose wealth resides in land ownership. This is what happened in Asian Tigers which redistributed every inch of land and led to rapid economic growth. 2. Presidential system - It'll put a dent [but not completely eliminate] the client-patron relationship between the feudal lords and the stranger kings. To completely eliminate it we'll need a powerful leader/dictator at the centre 3. Power in the lands of local governments instead of state governments - Will again put a dent in the fortunes of feudal lords in each state. Currently, local governments like Municipal corporations and Panchayat hardly get 3% of the taxes. Rest of the amount is stolen by the feudal lords sitting in the state capital. This is also the reason why our cities suck so much, in foreign countries like the US and China, state governments get the least amount of taxes and decision-making powers. It is mostly the local and the national governments that make major decisions. The recent Kolkata case is an example of why making law and order a state subject instead of a local one is such a bad idea. Reforms in India damage the client patron relationships. This is why PV Narasimha Rao lost re-election despite massive reforms in the 90s and was sidelined by his own party. Even his body wasn't allowed to be cremated in Delhi. This is why Vajpayee lost his re-election and his government fell, thanks to fucking Sharad Pawar our local feudal lord This is why Modi chickened out on farm reforms The funny thing is this is nothing new, this is all basic game theory. Happens in every poor democratic country. India isn't special at all in this case.

The Communists and Congress played a larger role in India's independence, while right-wingers mostly sat on the sidelines. The irony is that those who contributed little are now the ruling party. Bhagat Singh and Udham Singh, whom the BJP tries to idolize, actually drew inspiration from communists. Meanwhile, the trio of Savarkar, Golwalkar, and Hedgewar idolized the Nazis, much like Bose. Their fascist ideology could potentially break India, just as the USSR was broken. India is a country of countries, a fact that is being forgotten. Consider the underrepresentation of South Indians in the Prime Ministership-Prime Ministers from Uttar Pradesh have ruled India for 45 years, Punjab for 10, and Gujarat for 12, while the entire South has had just 5 years combined. Other states are at the mercy of this imbalance. This could fuel future divisions, and political ideology differences could fracture the country within the next 50 years.

@@TheEmissaryCo let me add another insight to your already excellent understanding - minorities in India have become super weary of BJP thanks to the propaganda & politics of Indian media and opposition and so they have essentially become free voters for Congress , where they are willing to vote for Congress even without a single MP seat representation (or a single jagirdhar from their side). So this makes it super easy for Congress to just get few jagirdhars(.ie caste coalitions) on their side along with this free votes to get a easy win. Rahul Gandhi's political acumen is so bad that despite this easy way to win, he still loses to BJP despite a 10 year strong anti-incumbency while no democratic govt has survived post COVID election in the world.

BJP uses religion but I’d say it’s less sticky than caste. INC also uses religion via minority stuff which is powerful. Hindus overall seem to vote for caste unless urbanized
@Nithin-h9j22 күн бұрын
@@TheEmissaryCo Thank you for your response! I completely agree with your observation that while the BJP leverages religion in its politics, it has made significant strides in improving India’s infrastructure. However, I believe the country urgently needs a stronger opposition, possibly a new party with a centrist ideology, to provide a balanced political framework. Although the INC claims to be centrist, its reliance on caste-based politics is arguably just as divisive as using religion. For now, the focus should remain on fostering development and addressing pressing national issues. The challenge of uniting Hindus and Muslims is complex and can be tackled more effectively once a solid political and social foundation is established.

That’s not what’s happening. What’s happening is the right wing of America and right wing of India are drawing into alignment just as the left wing of America and left wing of India are drawing into alignment. This is because of the deepening geopolitical convergence between the two great powers and the rise of China. And it’s because the rest of the liberal world order is deeply invested in the relationship between the U.S. and India working out. It’s also because of the huge amount of Indians on the internet in spaces that used to only have westerners. Before Modi there was no real right wing in India. Now you have an ethno-religious right wing nationalist movement versus a pluralistic, minority and subaltern driven left wing movement in both the U.S. and India. And the U.S. is doubling down on more Indian immigration because it needs more talent in AI, quantum computing, and software to stay ahead of China. So this will only continue.

@arunlakhotia7864 ай бұрын
I find this left/right wing categorizations to simplistic and lazy. The world is way more complex than to be partitioned neatly into two wings that are perfectly in sync across political, social, and cultural boundaries. These labels are great for lazy analysts who are content with jargon (fascism, democracy, freedom, diversity, religion, social justice, gender, equality, pluralistic, ethnic, and a few more). Then make a case by stringing together these jargon rather than doing the difficult work of going into the field and understanding the complexity of a society. To say that Congress represents "pluralistic, minority, and subaltern driven" is a give away of this superficiality.
@josephpalack14404 ай бұрын
@@arunlakhotia786 Indian society is pretty easy actually. It’s also a lot bigger and more diverse just than the rich people posting in English on the internet. And in any case, the left wing in India is much bigger than just Congress.
@arunlakhotia7864 ай бұрын
@@josephpalack1440 I see diversity and left-right partitioning as mutually conflicting. A diverse society would not have such clean segmentation, whether or not people are rich, English speaking, or on the Internet. It's surprising to see such an argument made on a podcast that is presenting a nuanced theory.
@josephpalack14404 ай бұрын
@@arunlakhotia786 the entire Democratic planet imports America’s domestic politics. India, for a long time, was spared of this. That will no longer be the case. It doesn’t really matter if American political distinctions make sense within the context of Indian politics or not because they are going to be applied anyways. And in any case you can make the point about diversity of beliefs versus diversity of identity all day long but it doesn’t change the fact that in India identity runs deep and all Indian politics are identity politics for better or worse.

There is an age old maxim. If the aunts start investing in a stock, get the hell out of the market. So social theories have a life too. When everybody understands it, the theories are no longer valid. By the time the aunt (don't get me wrong, i am not disparaging the creator of this video as aunt. I am equivalent to an aunt too) knows how the system works, the system has changed forever. This modern jagirdari has now run its course and the stranger King is on the way of the dustbin of history not because the theory of his power was wrong, but because it was absolutely 100% correct. And now we will need new observers and new theorists to figure out the new system to write new textbooks/videos. When those textbooks are published, it will be the time of demise of that system as well.

I would say that America has a different form of diversity. Its the only place where you have East Asians, Latin Americans, South Asians and Europeans all in one countey. Close to 14% of the US population is foreign born, the number for India is less than 1%. Also 80% of the worlds population lives outside South Asia and that 80% of humanity is not well represented in India. There are more East Asians in the local Ranch 99 in Dallas than there are in all of New Delhi. Also the level of racial intermarriage in the US (Asians with whites, Indians with East Asians) is much higher than in India where people still marry within castes
