@Bill Madd The DR-Z400S is around the weight of the CRF250L. The close-ratio 5spd is its major downfall, but aftermarket gearsets are available now. The carb isn't a dealbreaker for somebody like me. The DR-Z400S can also be shaved in weight and built to around 60WHP. The CRF450L should have been built with the CRF450X's enduro engine, not the R's MX engine. OR, Honda should have designed a long-interval 450 engine that could easily be built from mild to wild. The 450L also doesn't have passenger pegs. Even the DR-Z400S has passenger pegs. $10K and I can't even use it around town with a passenger, while I'm cringing about adding more mileage to it the whole time? I know it sounds like whining, but c'mon. I'm no marketing specialist or engineer, but these should be pretty commonsense things for a 450 dualsport. They already make a 450 race enduro, and even the 250L has passenger pegs. Even the Grom has passenger pegs.

Build your own. 434 bigbore with an FCR will get you 45 hp ACT wide ratio transmission with the the additional power of the BB will stop you from trying to shift to 6th. A well setup FCR is as close to FI as any motorcycle carburetor ever got. If you still want FI that has also been done. The LTZ400 is FI and basically the same core engine as the DRZ. See Thumpertalk.com for additional details.

I'm not giving up on the CRF450L, but I will be in 'wait and see' mode for at least 2 years. Honda has the winner, I believe they know it but just need time to react to market forces. Hopefully adjustments will be made in favor of the consumer! The after market is already working on upgrades and mods. Seeing this may nudge Honda in the direction we want. Your commentary is spot on.

How other companies respond? Yamaha and KTM have been doing it for over a decade already in other regions, they just need to do it in the US. Yamaha is a better example as the WR is cheaper than the 450l new, why they don't plate it in the US from factory like they do here is beyond me.

Exactly the type of video I need to see. I'm in a mental struggle...450L or 250L? Thank you. I'm about 6'3", and I was concerned I'd look like a clown on a 250L, but after hearing you say that you're 6'4" and it's good...well you made the decision that much easier for me. Much appreciated. I'm not much of a biker at all. I've had my full license for a decade and hardly rode, but I just love the thrill and thought of hopping on a bike and just cruising. I think now that the 450L is more than what I need as a very seldom rider.

Well, that's exactly what I was thinking about the CRF450L. I am a proud owner of a 2017 CRF250L ABS (owned the 2014 model before) and I do own two Honda Hornet (599 and 919) as well. I spent 7000 EUR for all those bikes together plus another 1500 EUR for a 1986 Yamaha TY250 Trial bike. That's 2000 EUR less comparing to the 450L, but I got four really genious bikes for that! In Germany, only 25hp would be street legal for the CRF250L, just as much as with the 250. There would be absolutely no reason for me to spend so much money for the 450L. Plus, as mentioned, the service intervalls are just ridiculous if you're into dual purpose bikes. That's what you would expect from a moto cross bike (okay, a 2-stroke Gas Gas needs to be maintenanced every bunch of hours, but hey, that's a competition bike). So...I have to admit that I'm in love with that slow, chubby 250 which is doing exactly what I had expected. 130 kilometers per hour, city traffic, commuting, riding trails and much, much more.

Nailed it. To add ADV is getting huge and for those who don't want the big ADV bike, dual sports are the option. The most popular dual sports are all TRAVEL CAPABLE! I put down 1000 miles just getting to where I want to off road, last thing I want is to be doing valve checks and oil changes mid trip. We want dual sport MOTORCYCLES. Not dual sport dirt bikes. I am impressed tho with the 450L in that it still is much more reasonable than most it's enduro competition as far as maintenance, but I'd hate to drop anything worth that much money in the dirt.

As others have pointed out, the CRF250L is a trail bike that looks like a dirt bike, the CRF450L is an endure bike that is street legal. Sure, you can keep up on well-groomed trails in the Midwest. Come and ride the West on your 250L and you'll be left behind at the trailhead. The 450L exists for a reason: so that Western riders can legally ride forest roads between the parking lot and a trail head, or to ride the forest roads between trails on a dirt bike, legally. It's for the West, not the Midwest. Not knocking the 250L, but it's 50 lbs heavier with less than half the HP and it simply doesn't have the suspension to ride single track or the whoops at speed. It was meant to be a street legal trail bike for casual riding. I have a CRF230L, a better trail bike than the 250L, but, again, not at all in the same class as the 450L which really is meant to compete with the KTM street legal enduro 4 strokes.

The 250L is an old school style dual sport. You can riding 50k miles with basic maintenance and still ride in the dirt. The 450L is a plated dirt bike. It's far superior to the 250L in that regard. It's not a street bike however. This not going to last cruising the interstate for thousands of miles. What truly makes the 450L perhaps not the "best" choice are the offerings from Europe. The Beta and Austrian twins are superior dirt bikes. The Beta has the advantage over all of them due to being able to come less restricted from the factory. All that said the 450L is an important bike. It signals a change in Japanese thinking. A WR450R or KLX450L are far more likely now than they were last year.

Yup. I said the same thing. 450l is nice EXCEPT for Price, maintenance and weight. Honda , why can't you take the new crf250f and add decent suspension ,signals/headlight and keep the weight under 250lb? Monster power is not as important to me as good suspension in a lighter bike with traditional honda reliability. Am I alone in this thinking?

No, everyone wants a CRF450L. Lol They want a 450cc version of a 250L because the 250 is too small and underpowered for most riders. People don't want a European bike, they want a 450cc japanese dual sport

I think you slightly miss the point here. You can’t just plate a dirtbike. In NC, there are tons of legal loopholes, and if they find out, they will possibly take your tags anyways. This bike is along the lines of husky, ktm, and beta. It’s a street legal plated birtbike which you stated, however, i dont have to worry about the tags being taken depending on the state. Yeah its a little pricey, but so are the other bikes of this exact type.
@jamestylerhagen1624
@jamestylerhagen1624 5 жыл бұрын
I personally wanted honda to make a street legal dirtbike and not a faster 250l. I own a 250L and it wasnt for me because I wanted more offroad/mmx capability and the 250L was a pain trying to get off the ground with its weight. A 450L dual sport wouldve been no different, and so, now, im glad I have a better option for strictly offroading with the occasional commute to school.

I’m happy with my 250l it has a tested refined reliable engine that gets me to work and gets me through the trails and I don’t need to worry about oil changes after every ride. For 25 hp you sacrifice a lot of time money and reliability it’s not a dual sport it’s a dirt bike with a plate.

474/5000 I think the same as you. The price is unacceptable for this bike even if higher quality parts are installed. I see the vehicle at a maximum of $ 8,000. I continue my CRF 250L. The performance is almost the same and sufficient for me. The price will certainly fall because other manufacturers bring just light Enduros to the 7000€ as the new Fantic Caballero 500 with 49 HP. Do not know what Honda has ridden in the pricing. Best regards from Germany

Ahhh everyone is mad or glad. Truth is people who know Honda know they can do better for less. Xr600r,xr650l,xr400,xr650r. All great bikes that are relatively bullet proof. 60,000 miles on some with just some valve adjustments and oil changes. Same with suzuki or kawi. They did it then why, not now? Do you really think after all this time and money we could get something that racks on miles like a 250l but pulls like a 450? We know that hondas 450r lineup is not known for longevity. Just couse u update the piston and lower compression aint going to help. They just wanted to use what they had laying around. No innovation. No extra fluff or real advancements that would make others go, aaahhh now thats the way to do it! That's why we complain. Honda is supposed to set a bar not just get next to it. Oh well.maybe its the push that suzuki, kawi, and Yamaha need?

Good points well made in this video. The problem is, if Honda had simply made a larger capacity 250L style bike, it would immediately be compared with the street-legal 'competition' 450s out there with regard to weight, and power and suspension quality etc. so they would have an uphill struggle trying to sell it (or at least in magazine 'shoot-out' tests) with what else is currently available - even if such a bike ought to at least have a substantial price advantage over the higher specification European enduro options on the market. But the real issue is that Honda don't have a 450cc single cylinder engine that has the low-maintenance characteristics of the 250L engine (which is shared in a range of street orientated models too). Developing a '450' for such a small niche model would not be economically viable - no one is going to want a 450cc thumper in a street bike when Honda already has the CB500 (471cc) twin for those style/s of bike. The 450cc capacity was only ever a [off-road] racing category anyway - the previous generation bikes such as the XR400R and DRZ400 became softer 'dual-sports' once the higher performance 450cc class evolved - much as the XR600 did a generation before... Hopefully this helps to illustrate why Honda really had no choice but to offer an existing 'competition' engine (their CRF450X) in a 50-state compliant package.

Picked up my 2019 CRF450L a month ago. Point A: The Price You're paying the premium price for the premium parts. This bike is tastefully designed, all LED lighting, lithium battery, a slightly detuned and modified motocross engine for better maintenance schedule. Are you riding a dual sport 1200 miles to the next state? Absolutely not. Niether are you riding on the 250L. They're saw-horses not lazy boy recliners. Point B: Maintenance 600 miles for an oil change, 1800 for a valve clearance check. Yeah, those numbers look small, but look at it this way, the CRF450L is not in the same classification as the CRF250L. The 450L is part of the performance lineup, more closely related to the brothers CRF450X and R versus the distant cousin the CRF250L. In fact, the 450L and the 250L are not even produced at the same factory. ANYWAY, everyone knows that OEM recommended intervals are very early. Especially when they come with warranties. If you're riding around at a decent pace versus full throttle, bottoming out suspension, hill climbing, rev-limiting, hard racing and high stress load on the engine it's not going to need that maintenance as often. For example, I also have a '16 CRF250X, with nearly 900 km on her of trail riding. Never checked the valves, only ever changed the oil once due to drowning it in a river next to immediately after buying it (3rd hour on it) Guess what? I don't rag the bike out, gentle and now the oil is dirty to the point where I deem it time to change. The 450L is a dirtbike with tags as AD said. It takes a quart of oil. That's one tiny jug, a filter, and a few bolts, done in 10 minutes. A valve clearance check is pulling the valve cover off, slipping a feeler gauge between the cam and the valve. If it's in spec, she's fine button it up and keep going. If it needs an adjustment? Few bolts, move the cam, replace the required valve spacer, and button it up. If you can't do that to your bike, you shouldn't own one. They're by nature high maintenance machines. A huge difference is the type of riding done on these bikes as well. The 250L is a hit up the trails to the campsite and great for light trail riding bike. Hence why Honda decided to put the engine from the CBR250 into it versus the engine from the CRF performance lineup. The 450L is a thorough-bred trail blazer with race components. Hence why it received a performance engine out of the CRF450R. Besides, it's a Honda. Their engines are hilariously bulletproof and reliable. Push the oil change intervals if you want, she'll be fine. Cons: A. Honda where are the handguards dude. B. Hard plastic skid plate? Weird flex but ok. C. The seat is horrible during break-in. D. Highbeam is cute. E. No fuel gauge again. F. Locked ECU to shut the hippies up.

I hear what you are saying but it is just a little confusing. You want the high performance 450 but not willing to pay the price for the technology it takes to make it what it is. The 450l is the next level. If you want what you already have just with more power then get a dr650. There is a reason those types of bikes are fading out. A small number of people want them. Honda made a bike for a market that wants a dirt bike with a tag on it not another boring dual sport.
