I absolutely LOVE Toriyama's works, both as mangaka and as a character designer, but I don't know about Kishimoto. Early Kishimoto(I'm talking about the first part of Naruto) is very good, I loved his artstyle and he made many memorable panels(I still remember the one in which Kakashi and Sasuke appear during the final part of the exams for example, tankobon 13 if I well remember) but he kinda lost his touch during Shippuden in my opinion. Everything seems so simple and un-personal there, I just can't see his passion for drawing anymore, it look like he was tired of Naruto and the editors really forced him to stretch his manga for greed.

Maybe it's due to it having a special weight to him and how he grew up watching and reading these stories. I'm glad to see someone who can breaks something like Dragon Ball rationally and allow time for thorough analysis. A lot of people just brushes off Dragon Ball Z like it's the root of all shonen battle trash, and only see the characters throwing energy balls at each other. I kinda get that if you only watch the anime and how drawn out the fights are. But when you read the manga arc at a time, it's rarely drawn out and each scene proceeds another fluidly.

toriyama's writting may be kinda outdated for today's standards, his art will always be amazing! he's mecha designs are always a treat for the eyes 2020 edit: i should mention that ALOT of the writing problems of dragon ball only happened because of shonen jump's weekly manga schedule, so he was forced to always end the chapters with a cliffhanger or something similar to keep the viewers engaged....and considering how toriyama admited he never plans far ahead for his writings and comes up with the story during the moment, you can imagine how the 2 clashed with each other and ended up with what we got, where if you look back at the story with a 20/20 hindsight glasses, you'll see the story is FILLED with plot holes and such, but theres no denying that the story and characters were EXTREMLEY refreshing and unique at their time compared to the other stuff running at weekly jump....theres a reason why DB became the father of all shonen.

Rewatching this. A reason Toriyama's art works is because he's not just an artist, he's a sequential storyteller. There's not a lot of those anymore. It's the same problem being seeing in Western comics. It's all illustrators. Yes it's pretty to look at, but there's no real storytelling, just a sequence of illustrations. Another great sequential storyteller was the amazing Jack The King Kirby.
@Gadget-Walkmen2 жыл бұрын
There are ALOT of storytellers that are excellent of using panels to tell the story through the comics. There ARE a lot of that when you actually look because Kishimoto is really good at telling a story through the artwork in manga, as well as Kentaro Miura, Otomo, Takehiko inoue, yusuke murta, and even kohei horikoshi. There are PLENTY of great storytellers in paneling! And that’s just in manga. In the west there fantastic artists that tell great storytelling sequence in panels for comic book like Jim Lee, Brain Bolland, Gary Frank, Jason Fabok, and the fantastic Mark Bagley who are all fantastic comic book artists! These artist KNOW hot to use panels in comics to tell stories that are amazing to read through! So don’t say just that “there’s not all of those anymore” because there ARE as there are phenomenal artists out there worthy of praise. So no it’s NOT “it’s all illustrators” at all and don’t sound condescending with this “yEs itS prEtTy tO lOoK At” because it’s WAY more than just that, as even just illustrators produce phenomenal jaw-dropping works of art that’s changed people’s lives and history has shown that’s the case with illustrations that’s stand the test of time in museums that are still heavily praised to this day. So bringing up Jack Kirby, as if he’s the only one especially considering how old his work and a lot of his comics are a lot of double spread illustrations in comics. And yeah his work is fantastic but your comment is SEVERELY misguided entirely as you don’t know what your saying at all here through lack of noticing the talent that’s there and even outright downplaying them here.

You've absolutely nailed it about the DBS manga. People like to say that Toyotaro has surpassed Toriyama and that the manga shits all over its Anime counterpart, but to me the fight scenes in the manga lack the sense of flow, speed, urgency and peril typically associated with later Dragon Ball. There's some stuff that makes me go "Huh, that's neat", but despite all its (often enormous) flaws I find the Anime version of DBS more emotionally impactful, both in the fight scenes and the more touching slice of life moments.

I remember getting teary eyed after reading his epilogue chapter for DBAF about Master Roshi, so he definately has it in him. Vegeta's disqualification in the Universal Survival arc was something I was dissatisfied with in the Anime (despite a select few good moments), so I'm really looking forward to how it will play out in the manga.

One thing I think also adds to why Toriyama's manga is so appealing is the usage of screen tone, or lack thereof. Toriyama rarely ever uses screen tone, and even then it was mostly in early dragon ball where it seems like he was more willing to take his time with the artwork, although I can understand why he decided to speed up the process later on. All the blacks and whites really stick out against one another, making everything look distinct and easy to differentiate

I've switched from reading physical manga to digital on a tablet (due to limited shelf space for these giant volumes) and I think panel zoom really adds a lot to the experience. It's most noticeable to me in Dragon Ball and Berserk, where they'll frequently use small reaction shots at the beginning of the page before a big half or full page reveal, which doesn't work unless you manage page turns very carefully. With panel zoom you click through frames individually and often at the intended pace of the story, resulting in more immersion with the characters rather than subconsciously skipping through to the big, eye catching half or full page panel.

I kinda wish there was a Crunchyroll equivalent for manga. You know, a website with a system that lets you access most stuff with a few headaches and ads for free and pay to remove the headaches? I'm not sure that business model would work as well for comics as it does for animation. I mean, your money basically comes from subscription fees and banner ads, without any middle ground. And I doubt that there are as many people who want to read many different manga series as there are who want to watch many different anime series. Until then, I'll just have to enjoy Dragon Ball Z through my personal favorite version of it, the Team Four Star dub.

Great video showcasing the great tools Mangaka to convey action and pacing. Some people (who refuse to read manga) tell me "but anime is animated, how can you read those still pictures", and this video explains how we don't need animation to get a thrilling story. Another Mangaka that I feel does similar things with paneling and pacing is Mizukami Satoshi(Hoshi no Samidare, Sengoku Youko, Spirit Circle, [ongoing] The Nihonmatsu Siblings and the Adventure of Wooden Valley). Sadly none of his works got animated, but I still recommend every single one of his works for a fun (and at times heart clenching) read.

I actually picked up the first series of the Pokemon Adventures manga expecting a simple but kind of nostalgic journey. Whilst most of the first volume was kinda what I expected, from Volume 2 and beyond what I got was a solid story with re-contextualised characters that added much more to the experience that I wasn't even expecting. There was always a tangible sense that the characters were in real peril and thanks to the wide variety of moves that can be found in Pokemon there's always a clever way to beat the villain without resorting to power ups (except evolution but that's consistent with the world). So yeah I agree with you and would definitely recommend it to anyone with a passing interest in it.

victikirby15 - I know, right? The Pokemon adventures manga and the Pokemon anime are pretty much based in two different worlds. One's a good story with interesting characters while the other's just... not.
@gabrielfreitas30336 жыл бұрын
Really? Barely anything in Adventures makes any sense, the only character that actually behaves like an human being is Ruby. The anime, on the other hand, has evolved to a really charming and fun slice-of-life series, with some solid writing and beautiful animation

Black Knight94 Reviews pokémon sun and moon is way better than pokémon has been in years. Sure he isn't going to gyms but the animation is great, I love the art style(Still love the original) , the fight are actually very good. and have some of that flow SuperEyepatchWolf was talking about in Toriyama's work having. Sure it's kinda slice of life but that doesn't detract from it.

Wait; DBAF was a real thing?! I thought it was just some made up western thing and that the "AF" stood for April Fools. Edit: There were a bunch of YT videos back in the mid 00s that just had images of different Super Saiyan transformations; so I thought it was all fake, just a bunch of western fan art.
@Moth-ManRemasters6 жыл бұрын

Excellent video, man. Toriyama was truly a genius(a term I do not use lightly) at the art of creating some amazing, frenetic fight sequences. And even though I prefer DragonBall's story, DBZ is king when it comes to fight sequences and intensity. On a side note, I'm happy to announce I have joined your Patreon. You truly are an amazing KZbinr who has an incredible depth of knowledge/ is passionate. Never change. For you sir are a gem in the anime/ manga community. :)

There is something exclusively charming about reading a manga that gets lost in the anime. Sadly, due to being busy, the only manga I keep up with now are One Piece, Berserk and Hell Teacher. Of course, that doesn't mean manga > anime or anything, just that I can sometimes feel the author's effort from the front row when reading their creation. Sorry for rambling lol.

I didn't know how to put this into words until i watched totally not mark i enjoy toriyama's panelling the way he uses space and his extraordinary poses you don't see that in new shonen how many time do you see the MC standing on their opponents head? I especially love the way he panelled the goku vs roshi fight the way we view goku through roshi's eyes and not vice versa people don't even realise that that subtle style of panelling was telling us that the tournament was not about goku winning but more about roshi's experience and how can he humble goku so that he understands that he should never get complacent with his level of power

Before people get on me, I watch h this at 1.5 speed, so I already finished this. I feel as if you’re giving the well deserved credit to the manga that most don’t give it. While It doesn’t get the level of credit that most other anime’s get, DBZ’s anime is still great and well received; but I think however great an anime, the greatness comes from the manga. However there are clear exceptions, but for the most part it’s true, at least in my opinion. Your comparison to DBS’ manga was an eye opener to me as well, since I don’t read the manga. It just shows how special the original artwork needs to be appreciated.

Very strong analysis here. I remember a writer by the name of David Brothers once argued that the Recoome vs. Vegeta fight should be the bare minimum standard that American superhero comics should aim for with regards to fight scenes, and overall felt that the care and attention he put into them demonstrated how lazy and haphazard a lot of comic fight scenes can be. It's no surprise that Toriyama was a fan of martial arts films, because he seems to have studied them closely, particularly how fights flow.
