The Empire needed the AT-TE and should have never stopped using it! We compare the AT-TE with the AT-AT and take a look at all walkers from Star Wars Legends and canon!

First I would small recon forces out to scout around and find weak points in the rebellions defence. Then I would call upon the air forces and ask them to bomb the hell out of the hoth base. From there, I would use my AT TE's and AT AT's. To set up a perimeter around the ruins of the base, and send in a large force to kill the survivors.

Really awesome to see, but not really practical. Sure, it might be difficult to get a walker off without damaging the ship, but there isn't much that a walker can do that a capital ship or good fighter can't. It probably wouldn't be able to enter the ship so it wouldn't be able to assist capturing it, and if it was merely destroyed then somebody has to figure out how to get the thing off the ship.

Fun little (now-Legends) story about the AT-AT. There was an Imperial, who was in training to command AT-ATs. He had his AT-AT lie down (imagine a cat sitting down on its legs) in a simulation when he got attacked by rebel airspeeders, resulting in him easily blasting the Rebels from the sky. When questioned about why he took the "unorthodox" tactic, he replied that since the underbelly wasn't as armoured as the sides and top it made sense to prevent the Rebels from being able to aim up at it, and also since he knew the AT-AT couldn't turn quickly enough to keep them in his front arc and they might do tricksy Rebel things, he didn't want to let them have the chance to go for his legs either. He got transferred to the Stormtroopers.

ree ree In direct combat, most assuredly. However having 1 Venator and 1 ISD I/II work as a pair is basically having a mobile airfield paired with a battleship. They cover the weaknesses of the other craft; Venator is excellent for fleet logistics and hangar space, ISD I/II has enough firepower to slug with multiple similar sized warships. The Empire did a big stupid by completely removing all Old Republic stuff, their new tech like AT-ATs and ISDs should have been implemented without scrapping the older vehicles. Refits and upgrades should have been sought after more heavily.

Was the AT-AT perfect at keeping order? I don't think so. The AT-ST, sure. But the AT-AT seems perfect for another role in a totalitarian empire. Propaganda. Imagine a few of those marching with legions of storm troopers in a military parade. Sure looks scary and impressive. But when you're actually trying to keep order, seems rather useless at taking out criminals and rebels.
@ThePalaeontologist
@ThePalaeontologist 4 жыл бұрын
But sometimes wars are fought to keep order; and the Empire would have been fighting a lot of smaller wars we don't hear about much because they'd be focused on crushing planetary defence forces opposed to them in their conquests. Diplomacy (and a lot of threatening envoys; sometimes in the form of Vader giving them a none too polite warning himself) was used to win battles with localised systems that were resistant to imperial expansion, to bring them into line. Or if you're Tarkin, you destroy Alderaan to make the Tarkin Doctrine as clear as it gets. Fear to keep systems in line etc But war is war, civil or not. AT-TEs perform well in the medium walker role with the AT-AT being ideal in the heavy walker role, during the Imperial Era. Both compliment each other very well indeed. AT-ST = Light/scout walker. Very good replacement for the AT-RT in that role. In most regards. AT-TE = Medium walker (relegated from typically being the prevalent heavy walker in the Clone Wars, though early models of the AT-AT were already coming into service during the Clone Wars; see Battle of Jabiim in legends etc) AT-AT = Big ol' sledgehammer option; true Heavy Assault Walker. P.S - I get your general point though still think the Medium walker role has it's place in the Imperial Era. Sadly, the Tarkin Doctrine has taken over the narrative with regards to how the Galactic Empire operated, largely based on the narrow snapshots into the Galactic Empire we get in the Original Trilogy, not showing Medium Walkers (just, light and heavy ones working in tandem) Therefore later books, also turning their attention to the Imperial Navy in an identical fashion, prioritised the ''bigger and badder means better'' approach of the vainglorious Tarkin Doctrine, shunned and sidelined the Empire having a more nuanced attitude to things (even though, they could be just as well written to have known exactly why medium units in larger numbers would be helpful) After all, look at the TIE fighter; it is in keeping with mass produced uniformity, yet there are countless variations on the central basis and theme of the bog standard, middle of the lane TIE fighter. Ironic then that the Empire wouldn't have an absolute legion of AT-TE (Mk. II's?/retrofitted and upgraded, redesigned AT-TE's to eliminate as many design flaws as possible?) walkers to hammer out the Imperial message to more systems than just using a less numerous, more expensive and harder to manufacture AT-AT heavy walker. The Heavy Walker = the Imperial Sledgehammer great for making light work of enemy fortifications. The Medium Walker = _should_ have been the Imperial Mallet to do more precise work. Great for knocking out a general range of terrestrial hostiles. Bonus feature: can also climb cliffs and be used on even small asteroids in space. The Light/scout Walker = the precise nail hammer to go to the finer details of slaughter (i.e. anti-personnel) First Order Megacalibre Walker = Heavy walker on Steroids also remedying tow cable issues. (super heavy walker is probably more appropriate for that monster; or, does it just shift the goal posts to redefine what a heavy walker is? In Episode VIII you can see retrofitted AT-ATs in between the Gorilla Walkers as I prefer to call them, relegated to a support role) That said, Episode VIII is diabolical toxic waste so the less said the better -.-

Reasons why the AT-TE is overall the superior Walker: More legs and lower center of gravity, therefore has more traction candidates cant be "tripped" Has a larger variety of weapons, especially considering the main cannon which cab allow the AT-TE to act in a mobile artillery role. AT-TE can scale vehicle cliffs. Overall a better troop transport. Has weapons facing at both the front and rear, plus a traversing main cannon allowing it to defend itself from attacks in very nearly every direction. Side note: that the AT-TE's main cannon "cant" penetrate the AT-AT'S armored makes absolutely no sense and I refuse to believe that the AT TE doesnt have superior firepower. Edit: AT- TE is also smaller and lighter, and therefore able to be more easily inserted quickly onto the battlefield, vs an AT-AT which needs to be lowered from a warships lift directly or requires a very large and presumably slow, specialized dropship to land on the surface of a planet.

The Empire didn't want the AT-TE, because the Empire wanted to instill fear and obedience into its population. The AT-TE is indeed the more practical weapon, but it's not that scary and intimidating as an AT-AT in terms of appearances. A tall war machine like the AT-AT allows it to have a height advantage, therefore being able to gun down upon short structures/vehicles and combatants. The AT-TE would be at a disadvantage to an AT-AT up close, because all what an AT-AT has to is just point its guns downward and have a good time shooting at a short and stout target. But at long ranges or confined spaces (i.e. forests, canyons, and urban areas), the AT-AT is at a disadvantage, because the AT-TE can hide because of its shorter profile. Hell, the AT-TE can even hide behind a small hill or go inside a cave or a shed - something an AT-AT can't do. But then again, both vehicles suffer from the likelihood of enemy combatants boarding and hijacking them, especially the AT-TE, where its short height in a confined space can allow infantry to get to high ground and jump on board. I suppose the Empire was trying to minimize if not outright avoid that kind of threat. Because the Empire is trying to police and frighten its citizens into submission, the last thing they want is for rioters or rebels to get to a tall structure and then hop right on top of the AT-AT.
@CallanElliott
@CallanElliott 4 жыл бұрын
@@tavariskaiser6742 The weapon of terror thing, they're not intended to be used, really. You build them in hopes that no one calls your bluff. If you want a real weapon of terror, you build something practical. Good example: WWII, sure the Germans had their Big Cats and these were indeed very effective weapons, but the Germans were probably dreading facing allied armoured forces because they just keep coming, and they just keep coming, and they just keep coming, and they just keep coming. Finally, having a height advantage can rapidly become a height disadvantage, because sure, you can see your enemy, but they can also see you. The hijacking isn't such a huge issue, I don't think either vehicle has hatches in the roof, so they should be fine. There besides, the kind of terrain where hijacking would be likely if forested areas, or cities, where AT-STs would most likely be main walker present anyway.

The AT-TE was quite versatile. In it's standard configuration, the Empire could've used it as a frontline assault vehicle, an armed and armored troop carrier, or as a fire-support unit with its mass driver. Then there's the fact that the Empire could've constructed it to be modular. They could swap out the mass driver cannon for missile racks, torpedo tubes, a dedicated indirect-fire artillery cannon (I'm thinking something similar to the SPMAT), or an anti-aircraft turret. And there are still countless other potential configurations. Come to think of it, an ion cannon could be quite useful. I'm picturing a scaled down version of the gun on the back of the AT-IC.
@18videowatcher41
@18videowatcher41 4 жыл бұрын
Also, I think the AT-AT would make for an excellent combination of a command vehicle, a fire-support vehicle, and (with the addition of top-mounted laser cannon and concussion missile turrets) an anti-aircraft platform. But as a frontline combat vehicle, I think it’s somewhat ineffective compared to the AT-TEs versatility and reliability.

Well, if the empire was designed to be effective rather then solely focusing on being as scary as possible, there wouldn’t be a rebellion, not the one we know and love anyways. Our rebels had no real business winning, the empire had the tools already built and laying around after the clone wars to bolster the newer vehicles made to fall in line with the Tarkin Doctrine. In space, imagine greater use of the lighter supportive Lancer, the Lancer being a highly effective anti star fighter ship, one that even puts the fear of god into famed revel pilot Wedge, and Carrack vessels in combination with the incredible power of ISDs and victorys which should of also been accompanied by Venators and their rather overkill star fighter carrying capabilities. The alliance had a very limited if not nonexistent ability to face brawl Star destroyers, now imagine filling in the anti star fighter gap the empire so desperately needed to close... Now on the ground, ATATs are perfect at front toward enemy style combat. Brute forcing their way through enemy lines. Now combine that with the ATTE, which’d do great to shield the slower ATATs from smaller, faster threats, and of course them being comparatively small yet still packing plenty of firepower in order to combat infantry and armored targets, they could effective fit into and fight within more obstructed environments, or dangerous and uneven terrain like on Hoth. Being able to be deployed closer and faster and in greater numbers. ATSTs I think would still make good light scout walkers and with the ATTE in the mix, would be more effective as they could better focus on light scout duties. On a side note, I think the Venator if they had kept it on common use within the navy, would be more effective on its carrier role if it sacrificed heavier firepower in favor of anti star fighter and/or lighter anti frigate sort of weapons along with better armor and or shielding. The Venator with its fair size and durability could better protect ISDs by being able to stick closer to them whichd come into play mostly when fighting other capital ships. Since it’s tricky when trying to deal with the issue of being able to utilize your smaller frigates in doing their intended duties while also trying to keep them safe, it’s hard to deal with fighters coming at you if you’re behind the ISD you’re supposed to protect, yet you’re behind the destroyer because you’re trying not to get blasted by opposing capital ships. Just a thought. Curious about anyone’s opinion on this.

I've never bought into the 'separating themselves from the Republic' reason for why the Empire did a lot of what they did. After all, the major symbol of both to the general public. The troops themselves, hardly changed appearance at all. Noticeable, but all together minor changes in helmet and armor design is hardly going to make a difference. Now of course the real reason for these changes is of course that these weren't designed when the original trilogy was made, but in universe the only explanation is a lot of arrogance and idiocy on the part of the Empire. The demand for a display of power, at the expense of practicality and serviceability. Which only worked at all because they had most of the galaxy under their control. Vader's hate, and Palpatine's Dellusions of Grandeur seemed to have deprived the Empire of a lot of it's capable military strategists. Which of course, is why they lost.

I tried at one point to figure out exactly how tough AT-AT armor is. There are diagrams from which one can take reasonable guesses of just how thick the armor is, which mainly just left the question of how tough durasteel is in RHA equivalency (RHA: Rolled Homogenous Armor, was the standard type of steel used for tank armor before the invention of composite armor. The strength of modern tank armors are still often given in RHA equivalency). The closest I could find for the strength of durasteel was this line from Wookieepedia "More resistant than standard steel but weaker than the common alloys of titanium". So I found an article comparing the relative strengths of titanium and RHA (I am assuming that "standard steel" is RHA, really there is no such thing as "standard steel". Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon, and you can get very different steels with very different properties by changing the amount and distribution of the carbon added to the iron (some steels are actually stronger than titanium)). It gave the mass of a cubic centimeter of titanium at 4.45 grams and a cubic centimeter of RHA at 7.85 grams (so titanium is about 43% lighter per unit of volume than RHA), and the hardness of titanium at 302-364HB and the hardness of RHA 241-331 HB (so titanium seems to be somewhere from 50% stronger to 10% weaker than RHA per unit of volume). So I figured that titanium is probably about 2.2 times stronger per unit of mass than RHA, and if durasteel is a bit weaker than titanium I'll just call it at twice as strong as RHA (I am being generous with the strength of durasteel by assuming that it has the same density as RHA but is "weaker than common alloys of titanium" per unit of mass, rather than per unit of volume). So now all I need to do is figure out the thickness of AT-AT armor, double it, and I'll have the strength of AT-AT armor in RHA equivalency. I did find an image cross section of an AT-AT, from which it might be possible to get an exact thickness (I haven't done any math on it yet (there are humans in the picture, so all it would take would be to take the average height of a human and divide it by the number of times the shown thicknesses will fit into one of the shown humans) but just eyeballing it I seriously doubt an AT-AT could survive an APFSDS round fired from a modern tank (considering such rounds generally have 400-700mm of penetration I would say they will probably slice right through the AT-AT from end to end like it was butter. Although some areas, such as the sloped section just above the main viewport, might just be thick enough to withstand some modern tank rounds). starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Durasteel cdn.ymaws.com/titanium.org/resource/resmgr/2010_2014_papers/GOOCHWilliam_2011.pdf www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fi.pinimg.com%2Foriginals%2F64%2F4b%2F5f%2F644b5f3c39909f44e3129642a751aa13.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pinterest.com%2Fpamchilds%2Fstar-wars%2F&tbnid=UHVn0gT5bZNfzM&vet=12ahUKEwjV6pnnicruAhXK654KHSW_An8QMygCegQIARA8..i&docid=RSA8usSj-D1EBM&w=640&h=978&q=at-at%20armor%20thickness&ved=2ahUKEwjV6pnnicruAhXK654KHSW_An8QMygCegQIARA8 www.steelbeasts.com/sbwiki/index.php?title=Ammunition_Data

The manufacturer of the AT-TE, Kuat Drive Yard, had commissioned the weapon via subcontract with Kamino specialized for clones. Not sure why they didn't produce more, but they were used in the Galactic Civil War in the Outer Rim.

The AT-TE is basically the ideal Sci-fi variant of an IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle) that brings a bunch of infantry to the front lines and pushes up with them, taking down heavier targets that the infantry might not have the equipment necessary to deal with. The AT-AT meanwhile is what happens when you completely misunderstand the role of an IFV, thinking that it's just some hybrid of a Tank and an APC. When you make it so big, heavily armored, and over gunned, you wind up with a vehicle that is simply too unwieldy to even use effectively, let alone manufacture efficiently. It's the kind of wet dream that'd be had by the Reformers, who are convinced that WW2 tactics and tech outshine modern conveniences, and all the old stuff needs is better steal and ammo. It's also why I think the Empire was doomed to fall. Using WW2 tactics in an age where Buzzdroid Missiles exist is simply a foolish endeavor.

Dammit Eck! You put thoughts into my head again for 'Imperialised refits' of MORE Clone-wars vehicles! AT/IE: 'All Terrain Imperial Enforcer' - Remove the dorsal mass driver, replace two of the forward guns with heavier versions, add docking attachments to the top so it can be carried under a Gazonti. BAM! AT/TC: 'All Terrain Tactical Command' - Remove Dorsal and rear weapons, remove transport capacity, add advanced sensor and communication suite. BAM! Ground-based AWAKS/command vehicle. AT/ARL: 'All Terrain Artillery Rocket Launcher' - Remove dorsal and rear weapons, completely replace rear pod with a 'pop-up' MRLS type launcher. BAM! light artillery on a armoured platform. I'm gonna have to pursue some of these ideas to be ground forces for my IDSEF concept... ^^; ~JD

Even with the multiple types of walkers used by the GAR, the AT-TE served as the Leatherman of the bunch. It operated as a mobile command post yet functioned like the love child of an Abrams MBT and a Bradley IFV. From recon (especially thanks to the pair of AT-RT it kept in the rear) to troop support to full-on assaults, the AT-TE did it all. I view the AT-AT as more of a psychological weapon. Yes it had large, power guns but it had a limited firing arc. Yes it had strong armor but it had exposed legs with weak knees. Plus, if it fell down, It Fell Down!
