The fashion industry is fucked from fast fashion like H&M and Zara which can pump out designs similar to runway looks without the runway prices and can come out with them quickly...hence why Phoebe Philo of Celine didn't want to show her pre collections until time of release because she knew Zara was gonna bite whatever she came out with.
@Jelloitsme7 жыл бұрын
jonnyfendi2003 yes! I totally agree that fast fashion is the reason why fashion is depleting. People now are not worried about personalizing their style because fast fashion companies just pump out whatever someone else made so the consumer just buys whatever those companies direct them to. If forever 21 says holographic jackets are in this week, people buy that. If next week they say it's out of style and rhinestones are the new trend, the people get rid of their jackets and buy the rhinestone pieces. People just buy what's "in trend" and if fast fashion companies can copy that trend and charge less, where does the consumer's money go? Honestly, it's hecka late and I'm not feeling well, so I hope I made sense lol. I just feel like very few people talk about that side of the fashion world when talking about the problems fashion industry.
@summertime0567 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of it stems down to social media stars and people like the Kylie Jenner and Instagram baddies that all have this similar look and young people looking up to them and thinking that they have some revolutionary style when in reality it's just the same form fitting basic clothes and rose patches on bomber jackets. The unoriginality within these famous peoples styles leads to it being produced in fast fashion stores so people can steal their look for less (because youths can't even afford bread so how will they buy a Gucci belt for $700), leaving the customer satisfied and the companies satisfied as well ($$$$). For the fashion sellers it's just about who can make the most dough, which means playing it safe and giving the buyers what they want and what the buyer wants is to look like the girl with the most followers on social media.... That's just my thoughts

Totally agree with everything you said. I think the main problem is the focus has shifted from finding value in hand crafted, designer items > to wanting the cheapest, fastest, easiest thing we can throw on. I loved what you said about WW2 and the rationing. The original Gucci Bamboo handbag was a result of the rationing, as he had nothing else available to make a handle with. Chanel during WW2 had to close down her shop, but she kept on doing perfume because it was all she had. The problem with right now is that everything we could ever need is available at our fingertips. In excess amounts. The demand has become so high, and companies are competing to meet that demand and sell the most. Brands individual, heritage identities seemed to have all morphed into one (they're monopolizing, like LVMH) and their core focus is no longer to stay true to the brand and the craft, but to crawl into the depths of each of our minds and make us believe that we need the product. It's totally synonymous with where the rest of the world is going. Money rules everything now. Everyone's tired, and overstimulated. It seems like creativity is lacking, but trust me Luke. It's simmering. Times are changing, older generations are moving on, the heritage, designer brands that we know and love are no longer the same because they're being monopolized and played like puppets on strings. Within our lifetime we are going to see the industry transform, so many iconic designers will emerge whose names we dont know yet, and a whole new era will come into itself. This generation hasn't experienced true loss, and once we do, thats when our creativity will come into bloom. It's a bittersweet truth that things usually get worse before they get better.

Don't you fucking dare use chanel as some fashion matyr struggling for her craft when she stole everything that made her famous. literally stole all of it, but was allowed to get away with it because she stole from jews. that she then turned in, to be arrested and eventually slaughtered. WW2 is why chanel is famous and rich in the first palce. Without nazism, she's have nothing. She worked with them.

I totally agree with you 100%, except that tbh today a lot of people are looking for the brand name. Like Gucci, LV and fendi for example... but they aren’t looking towards the craft and beauty of a designer piece, I’m sure most people who buy Gucci for “clout” don’t even know who Alessandro Michelle is and what are his characteristics designs. I feel like this era needs a new Alexander McQueen during the 90’s, where it’s really art mixed with clothing, and autobiographical, every piece tells a story... and people cheer and clap after every outfit being shown because of the love of the designer, lines of people waiting reaching the end of a street to get in the boutique and buy everything you can afford... Neither do I think that that time has ended, it’s just that after every tragedy, positivity and creativity arises...

I agree with a lot of what you're saying, the 2010s have been such a confusing time for fashion especially due to social media but this is also empowering so many small ''instagram shops'' and e-commerce are creating a whole new vibe in an age when fast fashion and ready to wear is booming thanks to the fact that were going through the pinnacle of minimalism and simplicity. the big fashion houses are feeling threatened and are well aware of how us, the millennials, could replace them in a minute, which is why some of these brands are doing THE MOST to remain relevant and it just ends up being a big cringey flop. also the fact that the sjw movement is huge at the moment, brands have to be extra careful with what they want to advertise. I honestly cannot wait for the 10s to be over and so ready to see what the 20s will bring. love your videos btw :)

You make a lot of really good points. But i think in my opinion the main reason the fashion industry is failing, as you touched on briefly, is that if you look at the youth of the post WWII/ baby boomer period, they were much more financially well off. Not only were individuals themselves more financially affluent, so was the country as a whole. Due to the baby boomer's over indulgence and excess, that is largely the reason our economy started to spiral. The youth of today no longer have the type of lifestyles where they can afford to spend thousands, barely even hundreds, of dollars on fashion "luxury" items. On a larger scale, our country doesn't have the type of means to support itself, let alone support luxury industries such as fashion. That is why so many brands outsource materials and labor from across seas. So sad, but true.
@jonnyfendi20037 жыл бұрын
but what you are saying is based on an American mindset. You have to realize that Asia is the new money and luxury companies are paying attention to the Chinese consumer. Also the Middle East. Just go to London and see the flock of Middle Eastern shoppers during "Ramadan Rush" as sales for luxury goods during this period can rival that of Christmas.
@marygrace48027 жыл бұрын
I am aware that i was speaking from an American mindset but only because HautLeMode made this video discussing the dying industry of fashion in America. So i was speaking specifically to his examples he was providing.

You hit on some excellent points! I think another thing with Millenials also is quality and fuckery. Young people just don't fall for the 200.00 sneakers and 150.00 jeans bullshit that late boomers and Xers did. Millenials don't mind paying for something as long as its worth the price. They're not born succors like previous generations were when it came to brand hype and peer pressure to "fit in" or "be in". They are a very cynical lot, and, as a result, fashion is either going to have to bring it or keep it...

This may be true, but I also feel like (especially in 2017) the general public and teens are more fashion forward/ conscious then ever BECAUSE of things like social media and online shopping. They may not necessarily be buying from Gucci and Dior because, like you said, they can't afford it, but they are definitely drawing inspiration from what those big name brands are doing. Or maybe the problem is that trends and fads are catching on so quickly that the companies can't keep up each season and it's kind of obvious that they are pulling from streetwear trends as well. I think it's a symbiotic relationship. There are so many online boutiques and stores that make fashionable pieces easily accessible and affordable to the masses so now more then ever it's easier for kids to emulate their favorite celebrities and social media influencers, versus in the past they could only really admire them from magazines and TV, etc. And I also feel like pop culture is DEFINITELY reflecting this new fashion forward wave. I mean just look at rappers nowadays. A lot of them are getting talked about more because of their style then because of their music, and you're starting to see in that genre that was based on an image of hyper masculinity for so long, people stepping out of the box, being experimental with their looks, and blurring the lines of gendered clothing. Thoughts?
@nocturne902107 жыл бұрын
KINGKHAYA I agree - social media is giving people more of a reason to be fashionable and stay up to date with trends. It's the biggest platform people have ever had to showcase themselves if they want to. My opinion on fads and keeping up with them is that it's more of an issue with high street brands as they always copy. Fast fashion only exists because they will rip off as many brands at they can at any one time. "Luxury brands" such as Gucci for example will have one dominant aesthetic for each season and will play on that. Same goes for Chanel etc. High street are just there to offer a cheaper alternative as oppose to having their own aesthetic/look so they are always trying to keep up. The video also touched on past generations particularly focusing on the decade look of 50s 60s etc. However I feel that in hindsight looking back we simplify those times by a few looks or aesthetics that caught on and defined them. Look at old photos of your parents you'll see that what they wore could very much be worn today by in large. Nowadays before something is even deemed fashionable or in season people are trying to bring it down. The same will happen with today's fashion however it is much harder to notice it now as brands that won't be looked at in the future make as much noise as those that will.

Thank you for addressing this! What you said really made sense to me, and I guess I realized something about the way that the young consumer market (including myself) thinks. I think that the current way career progression works, most young adults have to spend so many years being in internships, and entry level positions, with not much movement up the corporate ladder, which makes justifying the cost of most designer items impossible. But this means that most of the people that can afford these pieces are rich and affluent, which makes the market disproportionate to the actual population, and now with the internet and social media, people have the power to see what is happening in the world and reality of this wealth distribution more readily, so for a lot of people fashion can represent a world which has historically never included or accommodated them, and why would anyone want to support something that hasn't supported them... I realize now that I basically said exactly what you said, but thank you, because I think it needed to be said

You make some interesting points. :) Thank You for bringing up this topic. Personally, I look forward to the day when the ripped jeans are GONE and people wake up to stop thinking they are being fashionable or stylish in any means - wearing and paying for something that looks like you couldn't afford to buy a finished pair of pants . It's not original or fresh , it's been done. Can it be over already ? ... There are so many beautifully designed affordable clothes if you take time and seek special pieces out ... yet there's just a sea of destressed jeans being showcased on people and in stores and people want to feel like part of something , they feel that if a person in the public eye or on tv is wearing something that it's 'fashion' when it's a stylist or a brand they are asked to promote or they think it's cool ... it's time to move on to things that people can get excited about. New designers, New ways to keep the integrity of the classic fashion houses, and lets make fashion fun again . A lot of people just look like carbon copies of everyone else and think they are original ... it's like same type of items just rearranged different on a different person . Let's think what feels good on you ? What would you like to change? What would you like to wear ? We try to find ourselves in clothes and express ourselves in some way revealing who we are or who we want to be in choosing an ootd. Every day is like a chance to get to feel more and more like you ... but who is that ? The Good News is ... this is not a decade specific time period ... it's free for all ... we can borrow style elements from different decades and that's fun ! We have more variety to chose from and more sources to chose from and that's fantastic ! I think it would be great to instill and spread a respect for clothes like people do Blessing meals before they eat ...-in taking care of how you chose clothes for you .. not to impress or see who can outspend who on the latest trend or fad ... and being aware to take care of clothes and not see it as throw away if it was not pricey ... in fact there are some beautifully made inexiensive clothes that are well made and last if you take care of them - wash cold /line dry :) ...There will be changes and people keep blaming millenials for stuff .... millenials is just a made up term someone came up with and it means nothing yet people keep using it to try to make points and make people seem less than because if lumping a age group together...I just want to say that everyone is an individual and blanketing people as all collectively thinking and being the same is not giving people as individuals credit and the chance to do wonderful things in life . Everyone who is here on the physical plane had something great within them and gifts they were born with and it's up to that individual to use their power and hopefully for the good of themselves and for everyone else to be inspired in some way . This could be even a smile ... someone who smiles at people and they feel good being seen. In fashion people want to be seen and yet be considered unique and special and also be accepted by others ... so to all the lovely people in the world ... go do good . Feel good about what you put in in the morning be grateful about things around you and for being you And when you find things that make you feel good that you can feel good in then you will do good because you feel good . It's true try it :) play in your closet . Be grateful for what you have. Enjoy finding your own style . Have a beautiful fashionable day everyone ! :)

This video was so empowering and inspirational. A lot of people laugh at me because of the fact that I care so much about fashion and material objects. The thing is is I know it is if a company is not doing well financially and if they’re just simply not catching my attention, who are they reaching? Again people just think that I am being high maintenance but in reality I worry about these companies regardless if it’s a luxury car brand or a fashion house. I worry because I have that innate sense of style and grace.. Not to mention that I do reselling for a lot of these brands so it’s important that they do well so that my business succeeds But I’ve seen the shift happen right before my own eyes. People would rather buy throwaway fashion than actual fashion in a minute. And I am perplexed by that. Why? It’s whatever. I have to lean towards whiat people are buying this minute versus what I think they should be purchasing. It’s so complicated. They would rather buy things that unravel at the seams after a wash versus things that are going to last you a lifetime due to craftsmanship and ingenuity. But that’s just what they want to buy. #SoSad

Most of the problems come with now we have so many small businesses that have things that are less than a quarter of what those brands sell. Look at it like this, back when designers like Dior, Chanel, Balmain and Charles Worth you couldn't just go online and shop around, you had to go to a seamstress and get things made for you. You also didn't have many brands like Zara, H&M and Forever 21 reproducing things that have been made by luxury brands for a lower price. Us as millennial and also some of the elderly come to see that since we now can have more for less. Why spend $1000 or more in Louboutins when you can by a full closet of shoes with that amount at Ross or TJ Max. All this small stores also come to shut millennials eyes for the world of fashion, as you said there's no longer a respect for it. As a designer myself sometimes I catch myself giving a whole lecture to my friends or even strangers about who is Chanel or Dior or Versace, cause many now days don't know who they are when you ask. Also many know of the prices and argue that is stupid to have something she expensive, but never seem to notice why it is that price and all it goes behind the making. So yeah all is for the lost in respect and knowledge and the amount of businesses that have made the fashion world a Dust Town. Love your channel btw

I agree with the assessment that fashion is dead but not all of your conclusions. The 2010s aren't just about wearing jeans and t-shirts--all of fashion has done nothing but reboot looks from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s and resell them. Vetements hoodies look identical to the ones I wore in 2004. Coach, Gucci, Michael Kors, Chloe, all 70s. Look at Depop and it's a fetishized 2000s and 60s. Where're in a dying age of postmodernism and we're running out of things to redo, collage, and criticize. How much of fashion is ironic now? I'm Balenciaga is doing Crocs, c'mon. I don't want brands to be more political, I'm really turned off by brands using social issues to seem relevant (like Pepsi) when in reality their product isn't ethically-sourced, made of quality, environmentally-sustainable materials, and so on. I used to work in fashion but got so bored because there's literally nothing new being designed. Only hype. Same thing is happening in the film industry, btw.

I think the exact opposite, and I used to think the way you do when I was going to FIT,when you live in the city you lose a little bit of the sense of how the the world of fashion is going, donot get me wrong I'm a New Yorker and I love it, but for us fashion becomes something so daily that it doesn't seem to change for us,everyone dresses in black, no one is really looking forward to wearing shoes that aren't sneakers, and very warm coats cause it's not practical for us. But when I moved and started studying aboard same thing as FIT very fashion related, I realize what brands like Zara and other INDITEX stores (Breshka, Stradivarius)are doing for fashion, and yes I'm talking about clothes but at the same time it gives it that life that you're looking for, girls like Chiara Ferrgani, Sisterly Style and others bloggers and turning fashion into everyday, and that's when you see its life. Just for what's happening in places like Spain, Italy even Southamerica and you would get that global and very rich fashion sense that is going on right now, not stick to nyc cause I mean everyone is too busy to dress, yes we are creator, and we are the epicenter for all, but yet we don't have lifestyle to show it.

Decades are only perceived to have a defining style because of hindsight, once you've got a few under your belt you appreciate that a little more. You've made some very good points; however as an Asian I can tell you that while young people here can't afford to buy their own property (and indeed a lot of us live with our parents until we get married, most likely in our 30s if at all), they do spend on designer clothing, precisely because it seems to be an affordable large spend. After all, a tiny apartment still costs at least 100 000 in Asia, a fancy coat may only be 14000) There are tonnes of rented flats in Tokyo and Hongkong with barely any decent furniture, but the place is draped in the most current of high fashions, not even in closets. Asians are spending, and the fashion industry responds to that with more asian models and endorsements by k-pop stars, not to mention how much k-pop styling influences all the hot brands from Chanel to Gucci.

Very good topic and brilliant opinions. As you touched the fact that millennials aren't as well off and only minority are the ones to be the potetial buyers of luxury items and high fashion which I think causes fashion brands are lacking to be something to relate. As like you also refered that brands were selling luxury and independence in the past deceades through their clothing is a struggle for brands this day because, tying back to the issues we are exposed through social media, our behaviour of finding ourselves to look for these elements of feeling luxurious and independent has changed into experiences, having something to stand up for and having a empowering voice. Also the time of fast fashion has created the perfect sale point for the high street companies copying what we see on the runway getting the advantage to meet people in the half way offering the percentage of the original high fashion price and quality knowing that the customers aren't going to invest on pieces when they are wearing them until the next trend comes along less than 3 months time. Plus the faceless persona of the high street companies gives the element of bigger range to reach anyone in the majority with the ability to offer the fashion you see on the fashion magazines to the fashion worn by the people admired in social media. ---Love your videos and your personality you show through. xx

just how you explained the socio-economic reasons behind fashion in the 50s, I think today's predominantly "casual anesthetic" or streetwear reflects the fashion of this era. And I do see high-end brands struggling with this, perhaps we could also see this new style evolving from a rebellion towards the big players of fashion of the past decades. I think all of them will just have to adapt, and give way to more contemporary brands. imo popular contemporary brands, like that put out hypebeast for example, are already and will continue becoming bigger influences in the market that's pushing more street style

I think the fast fashion industry plays a huge role in all of it. When you have brands churning out looks weekly for dirt cheap, you don't really see clothing as something Valuable anymore, especially when these looks are basically pulled from the runways. I think if we want to change the industry, we have to start from there; changing the disposability(?) of the industry rn.

I'm afraid we're stuck in a limbo of over-saturation. As demand gets high (especially within the oriental market) and competition against all of the conglomerates gets tough, this recipe of uncertainty will continue on for a very long period of time. Also Social Media has indeed capitalized the clothing industry were it drastically changed the buying behavior of the modern day consumer. The decade of the 20's for fashion will probably still be worse as no other solutions can be truly affirmed. The fast decline of retail is also affecting big moderately priced brands. Retail companies are shutting down thousands of stores across north america because they couldn't keep up with sales and declining store traffic. All made possible by the rapid rise of eCommerce shopping.

Totally agree- personally, I love fashion for the runways, designers and visual appeal: I'm probably never going to have the money to own designer pieces or couture outfits. So, for me, appreciating fashion through watching runways like watching TV, it's just entertainment. I'm obviously never going to be in a position where I can support the industry, realistically, which I realise makes me a total hypocrite- but for now I can just really hope that designers will address these issues and adapt to them before some sort of tipping point is reached.

I feel like this era needs a new Alexander McQueen during the 90’s, where it’s really art mixed with clothing, and autobiographical, every piece tells a story... and people cheer and clap after every outfit being shown because of the love of the designer, lines of people waiting reaching the end of a street to get in the boutique and buy everything you can afford... i don’t think the era of Chanel and Dior making these dresses ended, but we just need some creativity... and like how you touched on 2010 being a confusing time for fashion, I agree... I just think that after every tragedy, positivity and creativity arises just like how you explained how fashion houses dominated after WWII, and it was honestly probably at its peak during Cold War-90’s

I think there's a huge disconnect because fashion is trying to appeal to the instagram culture and fast fashion of rich kids but most young people grew up feeling the effects of the 2008 recession and student loan debt bubble. People don't want to invest in clothing, especially if everything is very trendy and cheaply made but still has high prices despite lacking longevity. Many office jobs like tech companies in silicon valley have also made it more normal to have relaxed dress codes so there isn't as much of a need to buy heels, nice slacks, etc for everyday wear. And if you aren't working in an office you're either working all the time with low wages or trying to get yourself through grad school. Social media has helped breed a fantasy among millennials and gen Xers that will never be obtainable. Same thing with how make up trends are becoming too glam and unsustainable for everyday people

I came across your channel by accident and loved your roasts and your sassy but very smart commentary on runway shows, but I must say that I also enjoy your thought pieces as well. Despite being a gay man, I have never been that much of a fashionista, but I do enjoy and appreciate visual art and that kind of spills over into appreciating fashion... But then at the same time, I never really fit into the typical gay mould, being tall, stocky, bearded and hairy... Most men modelling menswear look like emaciated rock stars fresh into rehab or perfectly sculpted Ken dolls, I don't look like that and I never will. There is very little to identify with (maybe except for Walther van Bierendonck SS 2010 collection) and then even if you would like to invest your hard earned cash into a classic piece - they are not even in your size or they cost an arm and leg... I also find the idea of buying heavily branded clothing for 'clout' purposes tacky and utterly disgusting. It reeks of "I'm better than you, because I can afford a black Givenchy hoodie with a box logo for 600 euros or an ironic Balenciaga fanny pack for 400 euros" attitude. I find it wasteful, superfluous and disenchanting. It is not about supporting craftsmanship or quality, it is about showing off and nothing else...

Completely agree with all of your points, the main one being that most people including myself just cannot be bothered with keeping up with high end fashion when jeans and a t-shirt are so easy and acceptable to wear. A part of me likes it this way and another part of me is sad to see the elegance and class of a casual 50s dress go away forever. It feels like we're losing a part of what made people so sophisticated for decades. Definitely in an awkward identity crisis with society right now because of social media. Butterfly effect.

I also think that the industry might also be failing because for a while now we haven’t really seen anything that is extremely new or different. Back in the day we saw designers breaking the boundaries of what society thought was acceptable and now I feel that a lot of people are just designing to design so we aren’t seeing anything that is actually new or different they are just designs that we’ve seen in the past with a couple of tweaks so that we think it’s new & creative when in reality it’s not

Fashion like anything will grew and change. It is a reversal, streetware brands i.e., Offwhite, Vetements are overpriced fashion, while high fashion Chanel, Gucci, Balenciaga, etc are becoming street with their trainers, bags, etc. The sad part of life is most people are buying the same things as everyone to fit in, i.e., Gucci white trainers, to look good on social media and not knowing about tailoring and the fit of a garment and where every thing is surged. Espcially for those high prices. I applaud the few who have their own style, and know quality and buy vintage pieces for their amazing tailoring like an Alaia, Jean Paul Gaultier from the 80"s, Alexander Mcqueen, etc. and at a great price.

i care about fashion but i feel sort of like an outsider, or like i don't have very "fine taste" because I take interest in items of high quality in styles that (I think) will not fall out of fashion. Effectively, I don't think I'm fashionable. I appreciate style, but I don't want to compromise on pragmatism in my pursuit of style.

From my prospective I always see famous Instagram girls who are my age and wear high end brands from head to toe. And I'm just like amazed by how they can afford that. I can buy a LV bag if I saved up for 11 months 😿 and what's even worse than their prices go up every year. 🤷🏻♀️

Where do people wear the Haute Couture clothes? Not on the streets of NYC or San Francisco, and not in the high roller areas of major Las Vegas casinos. I guess some people wear the clothes to polo matches, but not at the Kentucky Derby. I guess the $100,000 + gowns are worn at private parties only. Can you tell us where else to look for the Haute Couture fashions other then the runways?
