Why The FIA Banned 6-Wheeled F1 Cars

Unless it's a Reliant Robin or broken, cars tend to have 4 wheels, and the same goes for F1 cars... 99% of the time. Jump back to the late 70s and Tyrrell unveiled it's P34, the first "6-wheeler" F1 car, and caused a storm with the potentials this new innovation could unlock.
It wasn't long before it was banned, but this didn't stop other teams trying to find loopholes though, and in the 6th episode of Banned, Jake Boxall-Legge take a look at 3 times we saw 6-wheeled F1 cars, both on the track and behind closed doors.

Legend has it... That the initial performance of the p34 in 76 put some of the teams back on their heels. Ferrari reportedly negotiated and purchased all of the production time from Goodyear that manufactured the 10" front tires. Thus destroying any future development for upcoming 77 season. So Tyrell had to run 1976 tires on the front and 1977 tires on the back. They could never get the car to handle again even after moving the front tires out 6" on both sides, destroying the drag reduction altogether. Legend has it,,, Ferrari being unscrupulous.

Huge fan of the Tyrrell P34. I race slot cars for fun and have a large collection of them. There was 1/32 slot car versions made in Spain and Mexico in the late 70's. I have well over a dozen, all different, a couple worth serious coin, like the Banco Occidental version. Scalextric also did a few versions of the March (I have 3). The Williams was never created as a slot car, although one enthusiast did make his own. Two years ago, Scalextric did a new box set of the Belgian Grand Prix winners

How much did it assist in Tire warming during a Safety Car Period and resulting rolling restarts..? Why was it banned so quickly..? And on another note The Renault Spring Damper system of years past was internal and hidden from view. It worked so well that the FIA banned it when I reguard it as a SPECTACULARLY EFFECTIVE SAFETY DEVICE.

My understanding has always been that there was no ban on 4 wheel drive cars but rather there was a restriction introduced very late for the start of the 1982 season on the number of tyres that constituted a "full car set" to four tyres meaning that Williams could build their car but they couldn't shoe it.

As the wheels are changed in parallel in F1, just have a larger pit crew to handle the wheels. That said, the close proximity of the pairs of wheels on each side would make it extremely difficult for 6 men to be side by side and working on each side.

It was banned in for 1983 onwards, mainly due to the ongoing war between the Manufacturers and Privateers. Along with ground effect, the manufacturer teams see it as a way for the privateers to gain an advantage through innovation instead of engineering better engines. The whole subject, the FISA-FOCA war (also known as FIASCO!) is interesting history for F1!

Yes, at 7:12 - because "the teams" (FOCA) unanimously requested the ban. Why FOCA did so is beyond the scope of this question, although Patrick Head reported at the time that they thought it would drive up costs and cause chaos during pitstops. (When observing a modern 2-second tyre change, consider adding 6 more mechanics to that scrum).

traction and some modified 4 wheel steering in front may = better cornering breaking but with the displacement reqs and added weight n drag probably not good for speed / time maybe better for safety or just one more thing to go wrong. pit time or less tire pit stops too much to consider. does less or more rules make it more exciting engineers vs driver based. Today still seems to be the money wins races vs back in the day the cheeky/brains and innovators could break the mold and win

How about water-cooled brakes?
@jackytwix5956
@jackytwix5956 3 жыл бұрын
I might be wrong but water cooled brakes were never banned. They just became obsolete when the ruled changed about being able to top up fluids after the race before the cars got weighed. Once they couldnt do that the point of water cooled brakes made no sense as the 'water reservoirs' couldnt be emptied/dumped at the first corner. Making it ballast in the wrong place on the car plus there was no way to have a water tank big enough to last the race.

What other banned innovations would I like you to look into next? OK, it ain't F1; but I will NEVER forget ABC's Chris Economaki calling the 1970 Daytona 500 on Wide World of Sports with "Bobby Isaac in the Winged Dodge" - The Dodge Charger Daytona with the 426 Hemi; and also Richard Petty in the (nearly) identical Plymouth Road Runner Super Bird. Although Chrysler built only 500 copies of each with the 426 Hemi to meet NASCAR's homologation rules; they also built-I believe-2000 copies of each with the 440 six-pack (3x2bbl), also sold at dealers. While it was officially banned with the 426 Hemi in 1971 (it was legal with a small block), Buddy Baker in a "transmission test" at Talladega set the closed course record over 200. mph. Search KZbin for "The greatest racing EXPLOIT of all time!" (no quotes) and see why the Tyrrell P34 and Dodge Charger Daytona were the two most amazing cars of the 70's!

Good old FIA let’s not have any innovation, why not have a speed limit of say 80 k and the race win awarded to each driver in turn.

Everything's been banned from F1. They might as well just run a Formula Vee championship and be done with it.

They banned them because there was a danger of F1 becoming exciting? F1 is supposed to be the pinnacle of motorsport, but all they ever do is find ways of slowing them down. (DRS Zones FFS???? ... why not all the time?? Grooved tyres??? remember that?). My suggestion: (1) Give them the basic limits of maximum weight, length, width, height and engine size (2) Let them develop WTF they want after that. If they want fans, or 8 wheels, variable wings, or side skirts ... let them. Let's see what technology can really do. Let's go for it and see what shows up on the grid.

I disagree with your conclusion that the FIA naturally disagreed with it. For a start, I'm pretty sure this happened when the governing body was the FIA's predecessor, the FISA. Secondly, the end of 1982 saw a complete revamp of the regulations, which - whatever the FIA haters say - was done in coordination with the teams. The biggest concerns at that time related to safety and it was probably the first tranche of rules to attempt to _slow the cars down,_ something everyone agreed with. This was in response to the horrendous crashed which claimed the lives of Gilles Villeneuve and Riccardo Paletti and ended Didier Pironi's career.
