Disney's Republic timeline is 10,000 years. It chops out a lot of history. While the expanded universe has its formation in 25,000 BBY. This is 200 years after the planetary bombardment of Tattoine( 25,200 ) and the Rakatan Civil war in 30,000 BBY.

The spectacle of war is now hitting home with it occurring in Ukraine, and the "Empire was Right" memes are no longer in just ironic bad taste. That is why "My allegiance is to the Republic, to Democracy" is now the byline … because Democracy on Earth is now under threat*. *It's actually being strengthened because the Democracies are uniting and realising their full strength, and the dictatorships are proving to be weaker than even they knew. But it was looking scary for a while and the West seemed vulnerable. We are living in interesting times, just like in Star Wars.

The center has always held because the center is a behemoth force on its own. Since it’s earliest days the humans of coruscant made many ventures into the stars In sleeper ships which would come to make thousands of worlds rich in culture and wealth in the core before extending outward into the galaxy. Connected by common ideals and fueled by vast riches who could hope to stand agaisnt a Republic such as this.

This is a really great analysis. I used to think the Ruusan Reformations and the demilitarization of the Republic was a massive overreaction to the "extinction" of the Sith. But with your explanation, it makes sense that the Republic would want to decentralize and more equitably distribute its power base. It's just a shame that Bane's Sith took advantage of that to build up corporations in the Rim into quasi-independent states.

Simply due to there being no massive unified force against them. Despite popular belief, compared to the Rebel Alliance and New Republic, the Galactic Republic did have considerable 'militant' forces at their disposal despite no actual 'military' force. First, for ground forces. 1. They had around "10,000 Jedi Knights defending the galaxy". 2. The federal government had the elite special forces Senate Commandos which "carried out secret missions on behalf of the government". 3. Republic Special Task Force " was a combat task force of the Galactic Republic.". 4. Judicials were the paramilitary organization used in place of an army. They had 3 main groups. First, Republic Security Force often called Republic Guard or more modernly known as Judicials; "The Security Force's missions were to investigate corporate and government entities as well as combat pirates and criminal organizations.". Secondly, Sector Rangers; "were assigned to a specific sector of space, and tasked with pursuing criminals deemed too dangerous for local law enforcement. Operating alone or in small crews, they were legally allowed to deputize willing locals". Lastly, Special Enforcement Officers(SEO); "enjoyed the jurisdictional freedom of crossing sector borders in pursuit of their targets. Those officers often worked alongside members of the Jedi Order to bring the most dangerous criminals to court". Next, Fleet resources. 1. Coruscant Home Defense Fleet, was the planetary defense force of the capital world. 2. Republic Defense Coalition; "was a rapid deployment force of the Galactic Republic composed from various member worlds." + "should a serious threat emerge, the RDC could activate the treaties it had signed with Republic worlds for more ships".3. Republic Diplomatic Fleet; "was the fleet of the Judicial Forces, the peacekeeping force of the Galactic Republic's Department of Justice.". 4. Each member world was encouraged to have planetary if not system defense forces of their own and wealthy/resourceful areas had sector fleets. A prominent one was the Outland Regions Security Force; "paramilitary force established by the planet Eriadu and the Greater Seswenna for the protection of the entire Seswenna sector.". This was just from canon, there was even more in Legends. Better than even the New Republic, a large pirate force, big crime syndicate, Hutts getting out of line, rogue system stirring conflict, or singular corrupt corporation up to no good were easily handled.

@@takkorinus7909 Indeed. Also, something the New Republic failed to replicate, even against the relatively tiny First Order. Not only did the GR even prior to the clone wars have enough resources and 'militant' strength despite no true military to crush the New Republic as effectively as the First Order did, they could have done it by toppling Hosnian Prime either through a simple galactic coordinated blockade or a daring incursion then immediately proceeded to defend themselves far more effectively against the oncoming First Order right after than the New Republic ever could. No idea what happened between the two era's or if it was just bad writing but I never could get over how canon denoted that the GR with no military power was not just more, but far more powerful than the NR who had at least a small military power. Considering after Endor's success the Rebels per canon had the resources and strength which superseded both pre-clone wars GR and what the New Republic became, it is all very confusing even if you account for demilitarization.

Wow Amazing that you know so much details! I feel like the Republic during this period was like the European Union without NATO and heavily relied on economic influence since they had millions of member worlds and controlled a lot of hyperspace lanes important for galactic trade even beyond Republic space. I think as the Republic became more centralized as a government, the responsibility of maintaining a military was passed on to the planetary governments. This made a disparity of defense among member worlds! Corellia was known to maintain a private navy to protect their major hyperspace trade routes to maintain their economic influence, while planets like Naboo only had a small local security and police force that was not prepared for a full scale invasion and was overwhelmed. Then you have the private mega corporations like the Trade Federation that got approval to have a droid army to protect their goods and services from pirates that would steal them when being exported. So only the wealthy and influential worlds could afford to have a military during this period but only protected their own interest and did not help out their other member worlds when needed!

It's probably the same reason why the Holy Roman Empire lasted for a thousand years. It was a confederation of Germanic states and principalities that saw the emperor as the unifying head of state, who had nominal authority over the great lords and nobles of the empire but often times could not overreach due to how powerful said nobles were. The head of state (the emperor) was also elected for life rather than the position being hereditary (although the Hapsburgs eventually ensured only members of their family would get elected) by the nobles, and was answerable to the Imperial Diet, which was a sort of senate. This system of decentralization and providing some accountability by the sovereign to the great lords of the HRE ensured that despite its ups and downs over the course of it's thousand year existence (such as wars, famines and religious revolution) the empire remained intact until Napoleon conquered its territories and dissolved it in 1806.

I played Stellaris with a friend once and it was always hilarious how every game went the same. he always made 5 worlds with optimized layouts, perfect tech tree selection, and policies and he would max himself out way before anyone else. he had lvl5 tech when i was only just getting into lvl3. but he had 5 planets. i had 133. each one intended to pump out credits, minerals, and equipped with a star port. At one point he had a fleet of around 30 ships with around 140k power that decimated the little fleet i had of like 50k power. so i paused the game for a minute, set each planet to make 3 corvettes and sent them all to attack his forces. ships arrived one or two at a time but he just could not shoot fast enough. especially because i kept sending more ships from the nearby worlds. occasionally id gather a few dozen into a strike force just to add some more damage but the majority were just cheap corvettes i used to whittle down his forces over the course of in game years. i had a ship I just called the sponge because it didnt have weapons. i had another i called the Ant because it only had weapons. sounds stupid, works stupidly well. i never figured out how that game worked like he did but i always came out on top becauase he could not keep up with my production. it got so bad that he wouldnt play with me if i started swarming planets (at any one point i owned a third of the galaxy by mid game) which was just insane. plus this was the good old days when population controlled the borders so I was huge

There’s a phrase I like a lot that goes something like: “The small cannot defeat with the big, the few cannot compete with the many” Honestly I don’t get the obsession with a lot of stellaris players to “play tall” when there has never been a “tall superpower” (and there will never be) in history and there’s a reason for that
@blakeetter280

@@Leo-ok3uj stellaris is a game and isnt exactly like real life, so in stellaris a 'tall' empire can work, to a degree. if you dont intend to be a warlord anyways. and most of those expand outwards once they max out tech but even then its a slow expansion in a game where resources get away from you very quickly. plus a lot of people are what I call formula players, they have an exact formula they use every time because they think its the exact optimal formula for maximizing the game. typically this has like "colonize only five planets" or taking technology in the same order every time. it basically results in the same game every time and for some reason they think thats fun. i mean, eye of the beholder i guess

@@Leo-ok3uj Well for one? 5 colonies create a LOT less lag than 133. And secondly, it's a lot more satisfying to do more with less. Almost any 4X game lets me spam as much settlements as possible to go for military conquest, and in fact for most of them it's the only viable playstyle. Very few games allow the level of internal development that Stellaris allows. Also as for tall superpowers? Try just about any Western European power during/after the Industrial Revolution until about 1950 or so. The British didn't take over India with raw numbers.

Democracies usually have better military's than dictatorships, as they have oversight and checks and balances in order to make sure that it is efficient and effective. A free Press will help expose any flaws that need to be rectified, as dissatisfied personnel can report to them if the usual chain of command is covering up flaws. Leadership is often more about talent than ideology and personal favours to a grand leader. Military theorists used to imagine that a dictator would run a war better, as their would be one central command, but the complete opposite was revealed by Hitler, and his obstinacy and screw ups, and refusal to take advice. There were several key moments where he either made the wrong call, or couldn't be worken up to issue orders, so troops just languished in the face of enemy attacks. Democracies tend to have militaries where individual initiative towards the ongoing goal is encouraged and prized, it's part of the basics of American training … small unit initiative, instead of being a unthinking cog waiting for the Grand Poobah to finally make up their mind, even though they don't know the situation on the ground. Just consider that with a free Press and checks and balances, the Russian military would have been in much better shape before the invasion of Ukraine, with working gear, troops who knew what they were doing and were trained. And a coherent strategy. What's been revealed is how a dysfunctional authoritarian regime like Putin's has lead to a dysfunctional amateur military like Russia's. The Empire could have been a lot more effective with reformers and open minded leadership - perhaps that's why Thrawn has such a fan club, he could have made a competent Empire.

Your examples of hitler are kinda dumb. Its his generals that made all the bad decisions and theb later on said it was all his fault because he wasnt exactly popular after the war. Hitler was responsible for mpst of germanies victories. And after France all the generals would do whatever he said. By the time he didnt take advice anymore the only commanders that remained were bootlickers. The head of state will always have a better idea of the current state of the nation than a minor commander. But the commander will always have a better idea of the current situation at the front. Its not about democracy. Its about mobility and flexibility. So the problem is not dictatorship, the problem is bureaucracy. A good army has lone wolf commanders that can make snap decisions. Or in other words: A country can only win a war if its government can trust its military and if that milutary has good commanders who follow objectives instead of orders. If there is no trust then leaders will start micromanaging the front. And when that happens the effort is usually futile unless the leader has a past in the military and/or happens to be a genius.

The Sith Empire had efficiency, but they also had fundamental divisions and constant infighting. The Sith, for all their power, were ultimately outmatched by the Jedi Order for that same reason. The united Republic was always going to prevail in a war, and they always did defeat the various Sith empires that sprang up over the millennia. In the end, the Sith realised that they couldn't defeat the Republic and the Jedi that way, so they choose a different strategy that ultimately succeeded.
@DovahFett
@DovahFett 2 жыл бұрын
@@Cailus3542 Or not, since again, the Sith's shortsightedness and overestimation of themselves led to the creation of the conditions for their own downfall after their "final victory" over the Jedi. Palpatine's ego killed him. He underestimated the resolve of the Rebellion after the destruction of Alderaan and he underestimated the humanity that still remained within Vader after he had found his son. It was just as Luke said, his confidence was his weakness, and that confidence is inherent to the Sith way of life, and therefore all Sith. They will always ultimately destroy themselves, and so all of their victories are fleeting. The fact that Palpatine's empire only lasted about 20 years despite him being so clever is proof of that.
@Cailus3542

another primary issue is that the old republic was relying on the Jedi as problem solvers the unfortunate thing here is that it worked until it didn't and when it stopped working there was no backup plan that was ready to go sure you can say 'we have this fleet to stomp pirates' but if that fleet is undermanned, unsupplied and undisciplined it's not ready to go and it's just a wastehole of resources which all of a sudden actually needs more pumped into it to be effective which also takes more time away from responding. there's also the fact the clone war was probably the worst type of conflict to have happened in the time period that it did if it had happened say in the pre SWTOR age the clones and droids would've been outnumbered by regular troops by the end of a year of conflict the only places they would've had number similarities would've been ship to ship combat but instead in the pre order 66 era senators were unmotivated to actually get their citizens involved hell clones had planetary garrison duties and mechanic positions which was a waste of their skills. for example, garrison duties left them to be outnumbered due to a lack of galactic manpower a locally recruited army wouldn't have this issue and due to the nature of the confederate droid lines you wouldn't need to be a highly skilled soldier to fight them defensively unless they outnumber you with the reality being that a properly established base with a natural army would only need ammo and material supplies shipped in. with shipboard duties such as general maintenance and basic shipboard work is stuff that honestly could've been handled by volunteers once you start getting into fighters and tanks that require specific training then you have problems however to make an example an M1 abrams field engineer course takes 8 and half months including basic for start wars which has flash training to the point that it looks like Kamino didn't even need physical vehicles to practice on let's say a month for becoming a capable mechanic with no prior training.

The Galactic Republic was collapsing in on itself anyway. Even if the Sith had all died in a shuttle accident or killed each other in a master/apprentice battle, it was still deteriorating and may have eventually ended up the way of the Empire in the Foundation series. The blatant corruption and overly complicated uncaring bureaucracy was leading to vast disenchantment. Left to its own devices it may well have collapsed, or at least fragmented into regional Warlords that played lip service to the Republic. The CIS was a Sith tool, but they weren't created in a vacuum, the conditions were there. And a lot of the Problem was Yoda. He had led the Jedi down a path of stagnation and indifference, oblivious to the problems on the horizon and the problems right in front of them. Completely remove the Sith influence and the Republic would still fall in the not too distant future. The only thing that could save it is massive reforms, such as if Ranouph Tarkins plans had succeeded in the Stark hyperspace wars, creating a more assertive military reaction policy… and perhaps Qui-Gon Jinn had succeeded Yoda as Grand Master, and made the Jedi more interventionist and open minded. Otherwise the tired old republic would just eventually fall apart slowly.

Much of that was due to the influence of the Sith throughout the centuries, subtly corrupting the Republic and trying to affect the Force itself to weaken the Jedi. Without the Sith, the Republic would've likely prospered much as it did for all the millennia prior. Bear in mind that there is a reason why it took a thousand years before the Sith acted openly. It took that long to manipulate the galaxy to the point that they had a chance of victory. Even then, Darth Sidious came perilously close to defeat before he could enact his final masterpiece with the christening of Darth Vader and the execution of Order 66.

I've probably said this before, but I'm paying attention to these videos and learning more than I did in school, because I want to get the details of how a major galactic power can function and get it right for my own sci-fi story. The idea is to spend a lot of money for a short period of time to create armaments that will be relevant 2-3 time longer than normal armaments thus reducing cost over time, but that US can never seem to get things done because everything gets caught up in bureaucratic hell. The prototypes in the military are roughly 30 years ahead of their time, but by the time said prototype armament is put into production it’s been 15-20 years, thus being only 10 years ahead by the time it enters regular service. And most of the time said armament is so ahead of it’s time that it becomes unreliable and hard to source parts. Look at the F-22 and the Zumwalt.

Building roads in Russia is easier said than done. Not only is it expensive too build but it would be expensive to maintain. It would be difficult to build and maintain a large road system that connects many different cities throughout the nation. The extreme climate, rough terrain and drastic temperature changes that can go from -80 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit would make this task hard. Even the small things like the boggy mud in Russia could sink construction equipment and make it hard to level a road correctly thus making it hard to maintain. The rail road system they have is probably good enough right now, but until they make it a priority and boost there economy quite a bit, I don't see this happening anytime soon.

Don’t forget that the Republic was much more stable then the Sith and Mandalorians. The Sith and Mandalorians required war and violence to fuel their economy, had incredibly deadly politics that encouraged betrayal, often took part in atrocities that brought about rebellion, needed constant victories to stave off inevitable political division, were pretty rigid and stagnant in their thinking and couldn’t adapt, and governments that couldn’t survive in peace time. The Republic has also historically defended its territory against invaders, and defenders will always have more motivation then invaders do for war and the Republic had an easy time demonizing their enemies.
