You got the sentiment a bit wrong. We were favorites in '74. Cruijff was not playing in '78 so the nation expected a lot less. In '10 we weren't exactly favorites, but the coach Van Marwijk hadn't lost a Netherlands game ever since he became the coach. Spain was the first to beat us in 2 years of Netherlands games. The '74 heartbreak was bigger than the '78 and '10 one. Germany is our greatest rival and we're still dreaming about a repeat final where we beat Germany. Not Spain or Argentina. Germany has to come second to us.

The title is more adequate inthe short doc : cursed 1974 Oranje was by far the best team but a combination of Bild magazine targeting our star players to create unrest in the squad , other homeground pressure by Germany , and inexperience and hubris cost the cup 1978 again very different story, Argentine dictatorship cost us the cup , Oranje was , in all likelihood the best team again. Overlooks second yellow cards for Argentine players, messi also , an gives a very very light penalty , a third of the four in this cup fo messi Van gaal shares the blame for not continuing physical Wout ball in the e..t. unnecessary exit but far from as dramatic as 1990, 1978 , 1998 , 1974 which were absolute world class squads And that.. my friends Is the curse of Oranje. Referees , chaos , dictatorships, home advantages time and again for big countries , etc I would also mention the dramatic and tragic career finish of Van Basten , was kicked to oblivion in serie A and quit very early with heavy injury. It's only recently that the talent well has kind of dried up, but the prior teams were absolute favourites to win the world cup. The late 80s - early 90s team literally had two different Ballon D'or winners but didn't accomplish anything noteworthy in the WC.

It should have never taken place in Argentina then, because many decisions, like for example the time of day Argentina was supposed to play their matches, or which referee (also nationality dependent), were heavily influenced by Videla. If the ball on the post by Rensenbrink in the final had gone in, it wouldn't have been unlikely that the goal would have been disallowed for some reason (offside or something like that), not to mention the trouble the referee made with one of the Dutch players before the final match, causing the Dutch team to retreat from the field until the referee changed his decision on the Dutch player's allowence to play in his condition (they were afraid to lose the organization's image if they didn't).

So, who says they can't become that good again in 10 or 20 years? The Netherlands has produced good players/teams very often. Right now we are just not very good as we are used to be. So, I don't think the Netherlands will win the Euro 2024 or 2026 World Cup, but after that... who knows? We will come back!

I think Netherlands need a hard reset in their football, they should act like a new country that is trying to pave their way to the final. Perhaps create a special training program or whatever, special scouting, I don't know some kind of long term program that is dedicated to win that cup. three lost already gave psychological problem that no matter how hard they try or how good the teams somehow the will lose in the final. But the thing is, I wasn't so sure how bad the Netherlands want to win WC. In the few last edition of WC they didn't participate as a serious title contender

In 1974 they lacked the mentality and the driving force to give something extra to tie the game when they were losing 2 - 1. In 1978 Cruyff and other 5 players decided not to go, especially after Cruyff escaped from being abducted in his home, which country do you think was involved in the abducting? And also because that was the most corrupted WC of all time. If it was hosted by any other country they would have won the World Cup. In 2010 Robben screwed it, otherwise they would have won it. Netherlands played 3 finals and 2 semi finals, they are clearly a powerhouse country in football despite never winning the World Cup, hopefully they will in the future.

I doubt it for 1978. Argentina had a stacked team. Mario Kempes, Ossie Ardiles, Fillol, Bertoni, and team captain Daniel Passarella. Plus I'm not too sure about those statements either. The 78 World Cup wasn't as corrupted as the one in 2002, plus there was no actual evidence about Argentina being involved in Cruyff's kidnapping.
