Why the Hell is the new Power Rangers Movie About Time Travel?

Sadly the power rangers reboot isn't the first power rangers movie to not have power rangers in it most of the time, both the first one with Ivan ooze and turbo a power rangers movie hardly had the team in their ranger suits, yes they did fight and all but it just felt weak without them in danger form, heck I could be wrong on this but I think both movies probably had them in their ranger suits in even less time than the reboot. Don't get me wrong, power rangers has been one of my be all end all favorite shows since I was like two years old, but I can't deny when it comes to making a power rangers movie it's a lot easier said than done at times.

To be honest, any fight/action sequence is good. The first non uniform fight in the original movie happens at about 17 mins in and they morph about 19 mins in. There's a good ten minutes worth of morphed fighting in the first half hour alone. There are also heaps of other action sequences like when they fight the weird bird things and what not. Overall it does have more action sequences even though it's about half hour shorter. Granted it wasn't an exact origin story, but it kinda was like a soft reboot of their origin as they learnt new powers and got new zords.

Friggin Boom Toys fair enough to an extent, I say that cause while we did get a nice un morphed fight near the beginning with oozes servant, the one where they fight the tengu warriors..........oh boy even as a kid I thought that fight was cringy, yes tengus are significantly stronger than the normal putties Rita always tossed at them, but for a moment the rangers seemed like they forgot how to fight back which is dumb because the fighting skills are their own merits not the powers. We've even had moments way before the movie where Jason and Tommy in their respective parts fight goldar unmorphed and while goldar was also more or less a joke character the fact that they fought him as they did without powers on their respective parts is no mean feat. Sorry for going off on a bit of a tangent that part of the movie was just my least favorite. Only other gripe I have to it is just having a second fight in ranger form after they got their new powers and then jump to the zord fight, aside from that I really don't have too much of a gripe with the movie, where as for turbo I just consider a bit of a mess mainly because the gaining of the turbo power felt useless since they still had their zeo powers handy and it's not like they were destroyed like the ninja coins.

I liked the last movie, but I didn't care for the costumes and I *hated* what they did to Goldar! And yes, there wasn't near as much action as there should have been. A sequel could have fixed most of those issues. I'm sick and tired of these *constant* reboots all the damn time. Anyway, hearing you talk about the plan for this next movie has me concerned as well. If they do a new rangers meets old rangers thing, that could be really cool if done right, but there is a very good chance they'll fuck it up somehow. Also, I'd much rather they just make a sequel to the first film where we catch up with the rangers 25 years later. I think that's what everyone probably would like to see. It wouldn't screw up the timeline, because that first movie obviously took place in an alternate timeline. If they could get the same people back to write the script and direct, that would be incredible!

I wholeheartedly agree with you on the time travel angle I don’t give a crap about Timeforce, let’s get a good MMPR reboot movie without a time travel gimmick

Glad you agree about 2017. I saw so many MMPR fans saying they liked it. Maybe they did, but I feel like they were just saying they liked it cause it's all they were getting.

Maybe if they made the sequel to the 2017 version happen, the Rangers would’ve had a lot more costume time, action, and a lot more of everything else to make it better.

Ok I’m just going out on a whim here and I think they might be doing the time travel thing to bring the masked rider back since last year the source material for masked rider (kamen rider) was time travel themed

I don't know if they are wanna go that deep into the lore though? Like I know they are trying to get power rangers fans interested, but the majority of people they want are general public or at least people who watched the show as a kid but don't really keep up with the expanded universe

Green Rico4 honestly when I hear time travel, I'm thinking we're going to be seeing something not akin to back to the future but more so multiverse theory like how it is for dragon ball z, though admittedly the reasoning to for that idea would be flimsy since the power rangers reboot movie doesn't have as big of a history like the whole of the power rangers franchise. That said if they do go back in time they need to do this, have Ernies juice bar back and have the original Jason from mighty morphin be Ernie for that setting, that would be a nice callback to the first power rangers series and a love note to the original Ernie who sadly passed away a few years ago.

Yea I think you are spot on. When they say they are 'travelling back to the 90's' I feel like what they really mean is 'travelling back to MMPR'

Friggin Boom Toys if they actually do that I'm curious as to how they'd pull it off, would the costumes look more a combination of power rangers and kamen rider suits than melted iron man armors, will the villain of the past be an alternate Rita or lord zedd, how would they handle the megazord designs cause not gonna lie the one in the reboot movie looked pretty bad, and probably the most important.......will they bring back bulk and skull???? If it really does involve time travel I hope the team behind the movie ask these questions as well and get some awesome ideas out of them, cause if actually done right even if it's goofy, that would be an awesome power rangers movie.

The movie lacked nostalgia. People that don't know or can't remember mmpr had no emotional connection to it because nothing in it actually shows you it's original form. That coupled with the fact it was mediocre at best, most people judged it as any action movie. You have to hook them with the nostalgia by showing them the old and then you feed them whatever story you want. You have to do this with power rangers because otherwise it's just a kids show being turned into an adult movie in the minds of those that have no nostalgia for it. Your idea of just setting it exclusively in the 90's with no time traveling is a bit too forward because we don't live in the 90's and you'll alienate the audience. Having the millennial teenagers meet the 90's teenagers would be a pretty cool idea.

The time travel element will be used to thwart an evil plan to go back in time and rescue histories greatest bad guy, Ivan Ooze, from being hit by Haleys comet. Ivan will then use his oozey mind control powers to turn the 90s Power Rangers evil and the new Power Rangers will have to stop them. I bought the script on ebay for $200.

@@FrigginBoomToys I wonder if they will try to digitally de-age the original actors to further that connection with the audience or go with new actors playing the same characters. Either way I do hope they try to pull a "Sonic" and fix what a mess theyve created. The only reboot I can think of that was worse than PR was the ReBoot reboot. I still shudder thinking about it.

I hope if they do choose the time travel plot, they go to the 90s, meet those Power Rangers, then go back again, and meet The Japanese power rangers, so the time line is ALL screwed up!
