good analysis! this was my first real taste of db when i was a kid, i was probably like 5 years old when i got the vhs tape of this movie and it’ll always have a special place in my heart lol. as an adult now you can’t deny that it was different!!

Very tonally dark and grounded. Also, death seems to have a finality in this alternate timeline (because plot)

It’s why I’d argue that Trunks is the best character in the DBZ universe. He and Gohan form this multi-timeline brotherhood that compensates for their lack of father figures (because both their Dads are so zeroed on attaining the highest power possible). Trunks dispatching Frieza is infinitely more poignant after you watch him mourning over Gohan. Great points in this video!

This is the way DBZ exists in a lot of fans heads, and it's why they don't understand all the gag stuff Toriyama does. I think there's enough room for both types of story in the DB universe, but we don't get nearly as much of the dark and serious stuff like this special.
