How are these animals alive... The more I learn about them the more unbelievable it becomes. Truly a miracle. But it's really good to know. We do feed hay all day around as it was recommended to us as a way to minimize cholics but it sounds like you mean no grains at all, but they do need the proteins and some need the more available carbs too (if they are too thin or work a lot).

Thanks for your comment. No, they really do not need protein/carbs. If they have 24/7 free choice mixed species hay (no alfalfa, no rye), then their cecum can digest incredibly well. Plus, it makes all the energy. Grains will actually decrease the available microorganisms, and thus decrease energy.
