@@palladiamorsdeus The Joker film 1, as I understand it, was a warning. A warning about what we have engineered our society to create. What it actively works to turn decent men into. So as far as the message, we "agree" with the message in that we see that there is a problem, and societ needs to be warned. But regarding entertainment value, we can see Arthur as the villain and still sympathize with him anyway, because as much as we see that what he's doing is wrong, we want the other villains to get their comeuppance. There's a morbid sense of justice in Joker beating up the thugs and evading the police in the Subway scene, and even in him murdering the comedian who laughed at him to make a point, even when he has no right to do most of the bad things he does.

The first movie was a hard movie to watch because the subject was dark and sad. A man falling to madness and losing himself to it. Some people saw in the joker a hero instead of a villian while others took the message of the movie and applied it to sociopolitical groups the creators had not intended. Thus, the sequel exists to forcibly destroy the narrative they see as "incorrect" and demean those who embraced it. Terrible all around.

That is the thing for it was never a Joker film to begin with for Todd Philips’s original idea for the film was about a mentally ill man who goes insane. But Todd didn’t think that people would like it and so he put the joker mask on it and just called it The Joker. Todd never had any real faith in his original idea and so he gave us a film that calls itself the Joker when in truth that was never the intention.

Rian Johnson is partly to blame for the "subverting expectations" narrative. It doesn't bother learning why tropes work nor how to make the subversion work. Everything has to be about themes and each meaningful part it could have ends up losing a purpose. Not once do these people want criticism because they want to feel like they're doing something first, not doing it well.

Yeah, it's like I was saying. The reason people have that expectation is because it's the most fitting dramatic payoff. So when you subvert it, you lose that payoff

There are two primary ways to see a film or any piece of media, as its own self contained work, and in the wider meta context. For example, Rings of Power on its own merits is kinda boring, nonsensical and badly made (with decent visuals). However as it can be compared directly to better works (Tolkien's stories and the Peter Jackson films) it becomes truly insulting and elevates it to a new level of bad. Especially since RoP keeps stealing scenes and quotes from those films, directly reminding and inviting comparisons. Sequels, prequels, and adaptations in media must deal with those connections in one way or another. It's one of the reasons why the phrase "The book is better than the film" is so common, because due to changes in format and people involved the same impact usually cannot be achieved, and the book fans are the target audience. It's one of the primary problems for media of today, the inability to write for the audience and not their own political, monetary, or other selfish purposes. A sequel or adaptation should almost always be written for those people who enjoyed the original. This is kinda like walking into an ice cream story on a hot summers day, and discovering it only serves hot coffee. Then the store complains when you ask where the ice cream is. Doesn't matter how good the coffee may be, its not what you wanted and its not what they advertised from the outside. It doesn't help that in the majority of cases the metaphorical coffee is overpriced and tastes like crap.

Anyone who doesn't mention the 1953 musical shown in the movie The Band Wagon and the legend of Faust did not get the movie. Those are the central metaphors, they are texturally supported and obvious, and anyone who doesn't see the similarities just isn't looking any deeper than the surface. It is they, the audience who only cares for spectacle and ignores nuance and true meaning in art, that the movie is made to criticize, not real fans. I should know, I am a forty year comics fan and I have even performed as the comics Joker in some very telling stories of his character, I know him well and I loved the movie on every level. This reviewer, like most others, is completely wrong. The story is one of Arthur becoming the Joker again because of Harley's love, giving her a child mirroring the Faust legend, then sacrificing his character of the Joker to cast off his demonic power and redeem himself, leading Harley to raise her baby to be the true Joker in the future, to fight the Batman we saw set up. I prove all this on my channel, but I don't do reviews and so only a hundred people have seen it. It also mirrors the plot of The Band Wagon with Fred Astaire becoming a star onstage again and redefining his stage show as Joker redefined his courtroom show, I mean these metaphors are in the movie and right there, That's Entertainment ties both shows together and the music class explains how musicals function, yet people are immune to understanding if it requires the slightest amount of work, like looking up sources and examining layers of metaphor. Todd proved that much, at least, and the truth is that most of you would not get it. This guy sure as heck didn't.
@mayam.32402 ай бұрын
I'm not even against the "message", there would have been enough ways to get it across in a layered, meaningful way. The plot of the first movie was subversive, too... and we liked it, even through literally noone seeing this on paper would have considered it to be a good idea. I did give Joker 2 it the benefit of the doubt until the last moment. First I was surprised to hear the overwhelming disappointment comming from every side of the culture but after hearing the official "musical" audios I do believe the negative criticism. All that is left is apathy, I don't even feel like watching it once it becomes available for streaming.

In the end it was Todd Philips who screwed himself for making a sequel that is basically a big F-U for the audience who dared to like the first one. Take about taking a massive victory and just throwing it into the trash. Actors and directors of today have no passion nor love for the art of filmmaking for all it is to them is a big fat paycheck with zero F’s to give for it is all about fame and fortune with no genuine love for the art form.
