Well done. This is is probably the best Jomox AB video I've seen. I've owned mine for a couple years and I absolutely love the sounds. But I've always found the kick and mbrane to be a bit overwhelming in their variety. You described them so simply and clearly, I'm going to revisit tonight. Very helpful! Still, sometimes I just want some simple 909 sounds, and that jomox kick can be hard to tame. It'd be really helpful to have a tutorial on getting those sounds if you are ever so inclined. In any case, thanks! Subbed!

Hey Dimund...I noticed you have the Moog, Quantum ,etc,and use them trusty Sony headphones, I tried many others yet nothing is like them Sonys when I spin music. The drum machine sounds nice, and the track is something I can spin 3am in a club. I have seen one of the older machines from them, and then I saw the Soma23. I primarily just use my hardware samplers . I will go have a peek if one of these stores has one to demo. Oh yeah, I like your setup which is the opposite of the mad scientist jumble of cables and gear that's strewn all over the place.
@dimund
@dimund 10 ай бұрын
Hey, thank you so much! Yeah, the sonys are great. Super reliable and decent sound, for sure. Super helpful context regarding the track; when I used ti DJ it was much more like 12 AM trap, dubstep, and house. I love dub techno, but I’ve never really been to a club or party where that was the vibe - probably because I never stay up that late lol
@michaels8607
@michaels8607 10 ай бұрын
@@dimund The Sonys are flat, and I have my system set up like that, so while I spin, i can tailor the sound through the sampler, as an EFX module. I go from the decks to the Rane, then to the Mackie which is also flat. Like I noticed, you mentioned gear that colors the sound, which I lean away from.I have simplified things to the PolyEnd Tracker and this laptop, yet sadly the screen was damaged traveling with the tracker.I think I will replace it,yet for know I just want to get to know CSound,VCV2,and use ACID. I have no idea how you get outside with that Moog AND the Quantum,since they represent the top tier of analog/digital...You will rarely get some great variety and devotion to the dance because these DJs follow trends . I have a club near my house and when I'm coming in from skating . No one is ever dancing, everyone is on their phones standing around, and the system makes the vocalists sound like banshees....yuck....

A lovely jam and a nice overview of the Alpha Base! Something you didn't mention that I think is important is: 1) To really grasp the MBrane, remember that its default setting is cup1=0 and cup2=64, not both = 0. This setting gives you no modulation as a starting point. Cup2 is different from cup1 because its 0 value is at 64 setting and you can go negative or positive modulation from there while cup1 only goes positive from 0 to 127. 2) To get predictable results from the FM synth with classic fm principles you should turn off its polyphony (shift+9 -> FMvoi=0). Otherwise you get weird polyphony not from the sum of all operators but from a different operator each time. This applies regardless if you use a midi keyboard or not. Or at least this is how it works on my model? These are two most misunderstood parts of the Alpha Base that I suddenly found much more manageable after applying these tips :-)

Hello wow thank you for this wonderful video!!!! I have three questions for you, please : - is it possible to plug an external synth (my beringher poly d, or lets say your minimoog) into alpha base and then apply alpha base effects on it and hear it with effects in headphone out or main out. - i guess it is impossible to séquence some polyd chords (paraphonic) with alpha base without saving chord samples in the first place, but at least would it even be possible? - how long are the samples you can record ? Thank you and i love this video which i looked entirely and your other jams as well. I love how you shape your kicks mostly. Wow. Also you mélodie progressions are cooool and make dance :)
@dimund
@dimund 10 ай бұрын
Thank you for taking the time to watch! 1. No, I don’t believe so. You can sample an external synth and then apply fx to the sample. 2. It has midi out, and I think you could use it as a sequencer, but I just wouldn’t. 3. I don’t recall the sample length. To be honest, I just wouldn’t look at this for the things you are wanting. It’s a great sounding drum machine with a usable sequencer. That’s it. If you want to have something to route audio into, sample, send midi, etc., I would look at an Elektron box like the Octatrack or Syntakt. Hope this helps!!

Amazing overview! I own Alpha Base already 5 years, but didn’t know about self oscillation possibility. Going to try it for the next session! I tried FM bass, but it sounds not that low as made from MBrane. However, MBraned one has klicks, which you can’t hide, because there’s no attack param for that channel. Btw, you just need to change the channel (and then go back to selected, if needed) in order to exit FX settings mode. Definitely not user-friendly workflow, hope Jürgen will fix it in MK2.

Years ago, I had the Jomox Xbase 09 which was supposed to be based on the TR909, certainly soundwise. I even found a very clever electronics engineer who had designed a piggyback board which expanded the soundset. However, I never really got on with this drum machine, it had some quirks when editing/creating rhythms and eventually sold it for a decent price. It was never anything more than a boutique drum machine to me. I guess this latest incarnation from Jomox is a huge step forward though.

@@dimund nah your gonna loose your time these things are rabbit holes for bored nerds that dont produce or release. if you are after serious live performing (i mean techno not ambiant, and god knows i love to go to bed with a good ambiant session), it's the kind of unit that wont help you to achieve that. a mono analog is nice when you know it well for one track, and maybe another generator dedicated to kicks, but, and i dont know you it's just a feel, if you are after playing sessions live, presets will help for one theme from another, especially for drums, even if you'll tweek you want thing to work together. soma for one track why not. i have been working on some synth design lately and asked around about topology and controls; well perference are pretty various, but one thing we have come to mark as a must be, is that switches are much more a preformers friend than patch cables... kzbin.info/www/bejne/hn7EiKGveauKo9E

do you use the onboard sequencer with most instruments or do you like to just sequence everything from another source? I like the idea of using an onboard sequencer of an instrument, and just triggering its sequences form another source, but that doesnt always work out...
@dimund
@dimund 10 ай бұрын
Depends on the situation!! I like both, but I think for most people just sending midi will work best; delays between devices are a pain in the ass to deal with. I have an external midi clock that is easy to nudge a midi signal forward or backwards in time for different devices, so it is easy to keep things in sync and in time. You can do this in Ableton, but it’s really inconvenient to set up; you have to access it through the preferences menu. Workflow killer for sure.

I agree on the user interface, it's kept in a "Berlin"-tradition, similar to mfb. The "Swedish" approach is more user friendly, but there seems to be a new, even more intuitive contender now from Belgium called Modor.
@dimund
@dimund 10 ай бұрын
True that! It’s not that it doesn’t make sense, logically, but just maybe less intuitive from a behavioral standpoint. Once you get used to it, it is fine, but it can still be a bit of a liability when using it live; I think the Swedish model is definitely geared toward the box being hooked up to a mixer and blasting out a PA with little room for error hah

Definitely! I used an mfb Tanzmaus on stage once but I sent all the CCs from Ableton clips, to be on the safe side. 😅 @@dimund

Yes! You can send the filter into self resonation, which essentially produces a sine wave. Pretty common on a lot of synths, but it’s an unusual feature on a drum machine. The DSI Tempest is the only other one that I can I think of that does this, but I’m sure there are more :)

I used to use the jomox 09 back in the day and I know what you mean by instantly sounding good but I hated programming it not sure if the AlphaBase is much more useable? For me there is nothing the Analog Rytm can't do in the right hands with resampling and sample playback on top of the Analog it´s just incredible Ive had mine for 6 years it takes time to learn but once you do like I say there really is NOTHING it can't do and its also so much more than just a drum machine. If you don't like the resonance so much on the RYTM its easy to tame by just resampling in the machine and taming it however you please. Also how's that Quantum? would love to see more videos on it..

I have an alpha base and i will say the samples provided do sound phenomenal. I wish he would release another sample pack for download. Not sure how he made them sound so good. Anyways, the overall fidelity of it is pretty impressive and i have yet to hear another drum machine that sounds this good. The kick is incredible and very inspiring. The mbrane doesn’t do much for me. But the analog vca and filters fill the gap. This and a perkons would be more than enough to do an entire show
