I'm a 62-year-old retired physician and had bilateral ACL repairs and partial medial meniscectomies 20 and 30 years ago. Increasing knee pain caused me to decrease my skiing and hiking activities In March 2021, I started a very low-carb carnivore/keto diet to lose weight. But just after a few weeks, unexpectedly, my knee pain disappeared. Then I had to taper my high blood pressure medicine down and eventually stopped taking it. My seasonal pollen allergies also went away. I eat one keto meal a day (OMAD) and enjoy multiday fasting once or twice a month. I've lost 40 pounds, my BMI went from 29 to 21, no knee pain and my endurance has returned to what I had 30 years ago. This lead to decades of swollen and hot hands and knees and the associated pain. I did the glucosamine chondroitin for years with no improvement, Voltaren offered some relief but didn't fix anything. I then got hit with an autoimmune disease, PMR, which only made matters worse. Then 17 months into my PRM treatment, which wasn't working, I discovered Keto and 3 months later was done with PMR, and a year later accepted Dr. Berry's carnivore challenge, and 30 days later was off methotrexate for my RA. Now, 4 years later, and 68 years of age, I can do ladder work all day with no knee pain. This almost made me weep with despair . The amount of patients who are coming for medical imaging for non traumatic knee pain / knee problems in the uk is just frightening . The amount of human misery associated with this is unquantifiable . People are hoping that cortisone injections or a knee replacement will solve their problems , but the waiting lists for these procedures in the NHS are very long now . So many patients can't tolerate the powerful anti-inflammatory meds , and of course many of the patients have multiple medical problems so can't take anti- inflammatory meds anyway . Here's the thing - today I was listening to a re-run of an old radio series called ' Dr At Large ' . This series was based upon books by Dr Richard Gordon who wrote semi autobiographical accounts of life as a doctor in n the UK in the 40's/50's . In today's episode I was surprised to hear one doctor say to another " not to put sugar in his tea because sugar is high in carbohydrate and high carbohydrate leads to obesity " . This book was written in 1955 , so that important knowledge was out there amongst medics in the 40's/50's !.

In March of 2019, after nearly three years of walking/working with a bad left hip, I got an x-ray on my hip joints. My left side was gone (bone to bone), and my right was slightly arthritic already. Even though I ate the S.A.D. diet for 56 years up to that point, my years of working in construction, and using a shovel, helped to take out that joint. I was also hiking and backpacking ten plus years previous to this diagnosis. I had to quit hiking in 2017. Fast forward to January 2020, I got my left hip replaced. I also began my strict carnivore way of eating, which I was beginning to transition into before surgery. I healed very well through 2020 and started to get my legs back. As of now, I function much better metabolically, and body performs well. My goal is to keep my right hip intact for the remainder of my life. Heavy sugar/carb consumption destroys cartilage within the joints.

Fantastic video Dr B! Before 2017 I was obese at 212 pounds. Woke up after another failed “diet”. Sad that WW failed me. Didn’t understand why every joint in my entire body hurt. (Seriously: EVERY DAMN JOINT) Googled “inflammatory foods” and was shocked! Every food I ate daily was on the list. Learned how to go about fixing me. So grateful I decided to go keto and found you. My pains are all but gone. I’m not 100% pain free but it’s livable and no more anti inflammatories! Understanding how the body works is the key to good health. I am into my third month doing OMAD and cutting out virtually all Carbs, sugar too but that has been less of a problem for me over the years. Apart from losing weight, I feel so much better generally, my sleep is dramatically better and I am so happy to report that I am walking more and more quickly too. I have less pain in my knee that allows me to walk a lot more, however, the stiffness is still there - particularly after standing for a while. I am trying to be patient and look forward to enjoying the benefits of this new lifestyle as time goes by. I absolutely agree with Dr Berry, it works...even after a relatively short time..... knowledge is everything and I regret that the health authorities at the top failed to let the public know that the diets we were consuming, are basically crippling us and eventually killing us. People seriously need to wake up to the fact that we can heal ourselves by taking back control of what we eat and how we eat......the benefits are real and I look forward to six or twelve months from now, when I am confident that I will be a different person to the one I was when I started out on this. I don't see myself going back to eating the garbage I used to eat....unless I want a very unhappy life being overweight and being riddled with inflammation and pain.

Such a great video. Thank you Dr Berry. From Allison in South Africa. I've got a floating ligament in my left knee. After a fall in 2012 and an MRI, an Australian GP yelled, "Bone on bone! When you get back to South Africa you'd better see an orthopaedic surgeon for a knee replacement!" I never did. I've found that losing weight is key. And walking. And being on a low carb diet. However, it's not been low enough, and just this week I've changed this drastically. I've already lost more weight, I've got more to lose. But I feel so energised and purposeful and encouraged. The knees are much better. I even stood up yesterday without a prop!

Has the weight loss helped your right knee at all? I was thinking the gel + weight loss would be the perfect formula for getting rid of most of that knee pain?
@sportysbusiness3 жыл бұрын
@@PattiJuni7 Be very careful with injections into the joints. Almost all work by dissolving the surface of the cartilage. That will reduce inflammation - short term - but it also reduces the amount of cartilage, basically speeding up the destruction of your joint. Your best course of action is always to find out what's causing the inflammation, and change that. Diet will be part and also the functional movement of the joint. If you have weak feet, start by strengthening them as they are usually the cause of poor knees.

The standard response is, 'Wear and tear, part of aging'. For my PhD I looked at knee osteoarthritis in obesity. Considering that obesity is a state of chronic inflammation it's not surprising that it is related to so many metabolic processes which become dysregulated, and in turn, lead to chronic diseases. Low carb seems to be the way to go to relieve this state.

Could be thyroid, and/or parasites. I had same issues after 3 years strict keto/carni. Turns out, going more than 6 months with almost zero carbs can really do a job on thyroid--body thinks its nuclear winter or apocalypse if doesnt get fruit now and then, dials metabolism waaay down for survival. So I learned that my body needed low carb with carbs from fruits and more fruit-like veggies (not starches much except occasional potato). Took about a year to correct things...and I self-treated for paradites with various horse remedies. Flukes in particular will coopt hormones to deliberately cause carb cravings AND if you dont feed them carbs they can suppress beta cells of pancreas...causing T2D insulin resistance and raising your blood sugars...they eat your sugars to survive. Parasites is the HUGE x-factor none of the keto community has adequately or thoroughly addressed yet. I suspect many fail to thrive on keto/carni because of parasites. Tricky af to treat, do tons of research first!!!! Must do antibiotics at same time or end up with SIBO or worse (dead) because the wee bastards are themselves hosting nasty cocktail of pathogens! Which they dump into your bloodstream upon demise. This can make one really sick--so no joke to treat. Research first.
