It’s just regular maitenance is not to be ignored, where as a Honda will run forever with pretty much no maitenance. Sure the maitenance is different but it’s not worse, it just can’t be ignored like a Toyota’s can. It’s just oil, gas and premix, Occasionally coolant, and spark plugs/coils. I have never really had to do anything else to mine and I’ve owned it for a year and a half

Legendary Bacc12 the apex seals can and do break, but only if maintained incorrectly. The rx8 was built with 1000s of hours of research and development. The only issue is when they do finally break, it usually causes more damage than in an rx7
@SkyHighClaw5 жыл бұрын
@@LegendaryBacc12 they aren't really KNOWN for breaking, no more than piston rings are known for breaking. they wear down after give or take 100k miles and need to be replaced. The norm is they get worn out of repeated uses to the point they don't create a proper seal so they tend to not be able to start hot, and not able to hold their idle while hot. However they WILL blow if you don't take care of the car, like if you don't lubricate your engine properly(premix or at least the bare minimum of watching the oil level), or don't take care of the ignition system, or lesser known if you let your engine overheat, you can create a situation where you can cause a detonation to occur where the seal gets blown. if properly taken care of apex seals wont blow they just kinda stop working after a long time. Which at that point a engine rebuild will resolve the issue. @jackturner24 is right in the sense that they are no different than regular cars in the sense its no more work to take care of them(well as aside from our gassing up rituals LOL ) and that they will last just as long as a regular but its WAY WAY WAY more critical that you're on top of maintenance

Part of the problem is the corporate culture. Mazda understands drivers. Years of rotary rockets, then the Miata... they get IT. Toyota understands building solid reliable daily drivers. Great video bud. The Rx8 and Rx7 used to be my favourite cars. Now i own an FRS and I do love it. I get your gripe with the stock power. Once you get it is tuned; that waiting for power is no longer an issue. The only thing i really disagree with you on is the "personality" thing. As we both know the Rx8 has a rotary. Well the FRS has a boxer. They both are unconventional engines that i love and give each car a personality. Sure the rotary still puts out more power, but the boxer is a bit more reliable. Both cars are still fun, and would love to meet an rx8 on track someday with my FRS. Cheers, great video bud

Probably you want to tell me that yur rx-8 have 114000 and it was never rebuilded, so be ready, you will do it soon and then you will understand why it is not so good as daily. If we are talking about GT86, you dont need to check oil every day, you dont need to fear about your engine, you sometimes change oil, about 10000 or 15000, it doesnt matters so much which oil you use and sometimes put gasoline in it, and also doesnt matter which octane you use and dont need to premix after every tank.You dont need to w8 a while for your engine to warm up. Ive done my own maintenance including replacing the coils at 90000 and replacing my clutch because the the throw out bearing failed at 109000 miles. Pretty easy to do. Having driven a 15,000 mile example of a TRD GT86 and comparing to (at the time) my RX-8 R3 with 155,000 miles on the original engine I can honestly say the TuRD is simply a slower car in every aspect and they just don't give you as much confidence in corners. It does have better brakes, but just lacks in every other category even practicality. In the RX-8 I can sit comfortably in the back seats whereas in the FRZ86 there is no position I can sit in where my head isn't sideways against the roof. As for driving it seems more comparable to a 1.8L NA or NB Miata with a few bolt ons and more weight. Despite what others may think of the RX-8, it's just the better car by a landslide.

James scott Oh snap! That's a big one... I drove my cousins Gt350, that's was an incredible drive, and a very well built track car... except for that nasty part where you couldn't track them due to the over heating.

Unfortunately you have stock wheels and tires on the 86. U got light weight rpf1s on your rx8 with not sure what tire. But stick some 245mm wide falken rt660s. You probably don’t even need coils. Then you will see the character of the 86. With coils e-85, full exhaust even better. The character is the low center flat 4 & lightweight. I max out at 1.3-14 lateral G and the steering is smooth as can be. Where ever you turn the wheel it goes without issue. Steering is super light/fast & responsive with a setup like that.

The 86, has still something particular, a Flat 4 ! and better Mpg, but ok the RX8 has a rotary you can rev until the bip and 4 antagonist doors... i had 2 RX7 an FB and FC, so i should go for the RX8, but the 86 is very close ! i would say that the 86 could be better for a daily drive.

This seem like a very bias comparison. If I comes down to it, I would definitely choose the frs/brz/86 for many reasons. They look better, are more popular and have a ton of aftermarket support and they are super reliable. Of course it’s slow stock, it’s a car you build up on your own… add some nice bolt ons, boost it, tune it, swap it with a 2jz, k series, etc. not to mention, the next gens are out now basically which are even better. As far as those Mazdas, I would rather get a rx7 FC than an rx8… just my opinion.

You didn't mention why is the RX better than the 86.. except the personal preference. Let's start with this: I will take your word for it, and say the RX is more fun ( not a tone more, just more fun) but the 86 will give you 3 times more fun for the same money. Bloody rx is a 12mpg car.. and if you push it really hard maybe won't get 9 mpg ( plus 1L of engine oil😂 ) Lol... Get a Nissan 350z .. is way better than the RX. Cheers !

Ugh. I was hoping to hear something better in this review other than what could have easily been proven on a quick search. (1) the Rx8 despite being around 300lbs has more power (2) The Rx8 has shorter gears which in conjunction with a higher rev allows you st squeeze a little more at the top end thus making it seem faster.

Both great. But while the rx8 has it on bhp, high revs and power delivery it does have many downsides, oil consumption, the cost of putting fuel in it (im from the UK). Its older so you will be looking second hand and hoping your buying a well looked after car, and most of all reliability. And as far as character goes thats just opinion to me the GG86 Has bags of character and pedigree as a junior racing GT sports car. I luv the styling of the gt86. Not so much the rx8. But the RX8 is CHEAP! Jump into one and then the other (stock). The Rx8 does give a lil more. I looked at a very tidy rx8 for £6000, but still ended up buying a gt86 for £14000. I love cars in this category. Give me an s2000x any MX5, 124 (pref abarth), rx8, gt86 and im going to have a great day. But in 5 years time id rather have an s2000 or gt86 in the garage (thats if i dont have a 105 serries alfa or a z4m before the prices goes above the clouds).

Agree, seriously what was Toyota and Subaru thinking? Yea low profile boxer engine, no revs, lack of midrange and torque from no turbo. Honestly they way overthought this, I bet even a tuned corrolla engine would have been a better choice.
