Sorry Supercar Blondie......huge error at 5.31. There is another manufacturer called 'MAZDA' that has been selling Rotary engines in production cars back from 1967 all the way to 2012!! In fact, Mazda has recently registered 6 patents in June 2023 for more Rotary engines. You should drive a modern one - they are simply awesome

You’re not the first Aussie to sit in that car, Alexandra. Now that I have your attention, my mother took me into a car dealership in Adelaide Terrace, Perth WA in the early ‘70s when it was on display. I was given the opportunity to sit it & dream for a while. I was given a glossy brochure to commemorate the occasion. My mother then took me to Wonderland of Toys where she bought me the Corgi Toys die cast model, also in orange. I don’t have the model anymore, though I still have the brochure. Love your video. I’ve just subscribed.😊

Great video. Thank you. I’m an old man and I well remember the excitement generated when the Wankel engine (developed in conjunction with NSU) was revealed. It was the future. Many (if not most major) car manufacturers obtained a licence to build the Wankel rotary engine, including Daimler and Mazda. Mazda is the only major manufacturer to have persisted with the Wankel engine, its first prototype car being the Mazda Cosmo. This was followed over the years by models such as the RX2, RX3, RX7, and RX8. Most other manufacturers dropped the concept relatively quickly because of the problems in the design highlighted in the video. The Mercedes C111 was THE “hypercar” of the day. I fondly remember building my C111 slot car kit!

As a child in the early 70s, I could only read, and dream, about the Mercedes C111, and in my mind I called it the C-Triple One. I had a battery powered model of it for many years but I don’t know where it went. Only many years later did I find out it was called the One - Eleven but to me it’s still the C-Triple One. 😊
@curbowman2 ай бұрын
The C111 actually did spawn a production car: the Isdera Imperator. It was built by a small independent maker, but it was so well made that Mercedes-Benz actually let them use their engines and even the M-B logo!
@JerryDey3 ай бұрын
This car was plastered all over car magazines for the entire decade of the 70's. I used to think it was very clever of Mercedes for getting more hype and coverage off a car they never actually manufactured or sold than companies that actually produced real sports cars.

It was killed by the gas shorts emitted by the oil embargo’s during these years . They went to diesel and developed a better engine . The c111 2 d came with the 617 turbo diesel motor ,it was put into 79 300sd models and later into w123 chassis models across the world . This inherited motor from engineering a platformed car was pure genius , these motors are robust legends . To put it as the best motor ever built I can personally say it is by experience . I’ve flipped 40 plus w123s over the last 17 years as a hobbiest and never had to open up the engine other than valve adjustments .

Yes but it’s a triple as where this was a quad Mazda use the Wankel engine in the RX7 they are an expensive car for what they are and they have an expensive maintenance bill to suit. Usually bought by middle aged men who have a lot of money until they buy the car. A friend bought one cheap and it was in the garage for repairs to the engine more than it was on the road or even fit to be on the road. Not a car I would have. 😊😊😊

Well, rotary-engines were widely used at some time. Japanese car brand Mazda has experimented with rotary-engined cars since the 1960s. Its first success was the 1967 Cosmo Coupé, which was renowned for its efficient and ultra-smooth rotary engine. Since then, it’s developed a handful of other rotary-powered models, including the RX-7, RX-8 and a rotary version of the Mazda 2, launched back in 2013.

The Wankel rotary engine, invented by Felix Wankel, had several advantages, such as being compact, lightweight, and producing smooth power delivery due to its rotary design. However, it failed to achieve widespread adoption for several reasons: 1. Poor Fuel Efficiency: The Wankel engine had poor thermal efficiency compared to traditional piston engines. Its design caused inefficient combustion, leading to higher fuel consumption. 2. Emissions: Due to incomplete combustion and higher oil consumption, the Wankel engine struggled to meet increasingly stringent emissions standards, especially in the U.S. and Europe. 3. Sealing Issues: One of the key technical challenges was the durability of the engine’s apex seals. These seals, located at the tips of the rotor, would wear down quickly and cause loss of compression and efficiency, leading to frequent maintenance. 4. Oil Consumption: Wankel engines used more oil than conventional engines because oil had to be injected into the combustion chamber to lubricate the rotor seals. This further contributed to emissions and made the engine less appealing to consumers. 5. Reliability and Maintenance: The combination of sealing problems and high oil consumption led to shorter engine lifespans, which affected reliability. As a result, Wankel engines required more frequent repairs and maintenance. 6. Development Costs: Automakers found it expensive to continuously develop and refine the Wankel engine to address its shortcomings. Only a few manufacturers, like Mazda, invested in improving the technology, but even they phased it out after the 2012 RX-8. Despite its failure, the Wankel engine still has niche applications, such as in some hybrid vehicles and in UAVs, due to its compact size and smooth operation.
