Now, the Versa might not be the flashiest or most powerful car out there, but for a subcompact sedan, it’s got some solid things going for it. Under the hood, you’re looking at a 122-horsepower 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine-simple but reliable. And here’s something you don’t see much anymore: a five-speed manual transmission is standard on the base S model. But if you prefer the ease of an automatic, the CVT is available for an extra $1800, which brings the total up to $20,130.
Let’s break down the lineup. The Versa comes in three trim levels: the base S, mid-tier SV, and the sportier SR. If you go for the SR, which starts at $22,330, you’re getting some extra style points-think dark chrome grille, black 17-inch wheels, and a rear spoiler. Inside, you’ve got those cool orange accents and an upgraded interior with trim-specific upholstery and heated front seats.
The SV is a nice middle ground, starting at $21,630. For just a bit more cash, you get a lot of the creature comforts that make daily driving a bit more enjoyable.
Nissan has also thrown in some sweet updates for the 2025 model year. You’re getting standard LED daytime running lights and headlamps, which is a nice touch for a car in this price range. Plus, they’ve added complimentary maintenance that covers three oil changes for the first two years or 24,000 miles.
The Versa pretty much stands alone. Earlier this year, Mitsubishi decided to discontinue the Mirage hatchback and G4 sedan, which were the only other real contenders in this price range. So, with the Mirage gone, the Versa has officially cemented its role as the last sub-$20,000 new car on the market.
If you’re willing to stretch your budget a bit, Nissan’s Kicks is another great option. It’s slightly larger, starts around $23,000, and offers more space and tech.
